In the ideal world good parents have some control over the games their children use. They love them and care about them as well. In the real world, far too many children are raising themselves with little to no parental influences. Far too many parent's have adopted the attitude that their children is going to be exposed anyway, so why not go ahead and do in the controlled environment of the home? Young children own games like Grand Theft Auto, in which you kill cops, people and steal cars and money. We are creating a world that demands a Big Brother take control as more parents withdraw.
Sooner or later the industry is going to have to take responsibility for the violent garbage they produce. I purchased an X-Box for my Daughter but finding titles that are suitable is next to impossible. I've spent a small fortune on what she does have and would buy her more if any were available.
I think that the problem is that the games which are sold today don't require any imagination to create. They all seem to follow the same cookie cutter recipe, "Big gun, kill everything, lots of blood and guts." big whoop!
Obviously the industry is all about quantity and not quality. Perhapse if they really invested in some great quality that wasn't socially distructive, they would see that quantity would follow.
First off, let me be the first one to say I am glad you are involved in... and care very much for your daughters upbringing. There are too many people that do not have the "time" to even get involved in this issue.
From this point on though, I will disagree with the rest of your post. I feel it is the parents responsability to review and enforce what can and cant be done in your home. I have done my homework and came to the conclusion that the only platform for my younger age children is the gamecube. The games for that system are far more appropriate and in my opinion, more challanging to a childs mind that the basic shott-em-up thriller. But in the end it is our responsability to choose... I should actually say guide, what our children can and cannot do, watch, play or listen too. There are far to many parents that are too busy (or lazy in my opinion) to truly get involved in there childrens life.
We tend to be far to involved in our futures/investments/401K's and careers to actually know what our kids are doing.
I assume you are around the same age as me. I grew up n the 80's. I clearly remember the crap the PMRC was trying to preach on the music industry back then. "Ozzy is the devil" " Megadeth made ny son beat those kids up" "my daughter got pregnat while listening to BonJovi's "Never say goodbye" so it clearly must be that bands fault. I am sure you were rebellious like every other teen and from the sound if it you turned out O.K.
This issue is never going to be the producers fault. Do a little more research. Talk with your children. Get involved (like you already have... just a litle more) It is our problem when our kids dont do the right thing. Because we never showed them what the right thing was... for whatever the reason was. Dont expect the corporations that want your money to act morally. They want money and thats all that counts to them.
Best regards to you and you daughter
E.
I know that is not true. I have many violent games. I am intrigued at the many differences in them. As far as I'm concerned the story lines are the best part. I have one question, have you played anything other than GTA, because then you would know the differences I am talking about?
That is exactly why I bought a nintendo gamecube for my son. They have a lot more games that are specifically designed for children. All the mario and yoshi games as well as the backyard baseball. Bowling, shrek etc...
I purposely didn't get a play station or an xbox because the games are more for 18 yr olds and adults.
I had a playstation when they first came out. I knew what they were all about.
Maybe you should have done a little research first on the games made for the system before buying it and then complaining about it. The company needs to make games for older people as well as children. That;s why there is a rating system, just like the movies for a REASON.
The news is worse than any video game you will ever buy and unfortunately that's real life.
It is our responsibility as parents to regulate what movies our kids see and what video games our kids play, not the manufacturers or the movie studios. The adults of this world need to be entertained too. That's why there are R rated movies and video games rated teen or adult. It's up to us to decide what is suitable for our children.
If you want to reflect something other than violence in our video games, perhaps it is worthwhile to step away from what we consider our cultural norms. Watched a football or hockey "game" lately? Ever wonder where $300 billion in federal "defense" spending goes each year? Any questions after watching the wide variety of cop and "crime procedure" shows on mainstream television? We are a violent country. 3000 Americans died on 9/11/2001 and the result is at least ten times that many civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Violence in video games is not causal in our culture.
I am an avid middle aged (35) ''PC-gamer'' and father to a 9 month old. I love many of the touted violent games out there (i.e. HL-2, Call of Duty, Unreal Tournament, Etc.). I feel that a responsible adult or even 16+ yr old can handle all of these titles and, if raised properly, would shurely know the difference between reality & the game/right & wrong. It is up to US; the parents to keep children out there from experiencing them.
Millions of kids everyday play violent games like Grand theft auto and maybe 5 a year do anything that might have been done in the game. Why not blame violent movies for violent reenactments? Because if people like Jack Thompson tried to go againts the lawyers of big movie companys, he would be crushed. Can anybody else see that its not the games causing this? Its the kids themselfs. If all video games, or anything violent that little kids can watch never existed, that doesint mean kids wouldint do some crazy that could lead to suicide or something. Dont sue hard working engineers that are just making a living for making a violent video game. These days people crave violence.
Why aren't more people bringing that up? I tip my hat to you.
Your last line hits the nail on the head. People crave violence. What a sad statement for our society.
...or has everyone been snozing for the last 5,000 years? Just one any history book! Do ya notice the inquisitions, the crusades, hundreds of wars, revolutions, and coups? We're not a violent nation, culture, or society. WE ARE A VIOLENT SPECIES! Pretty much like every other species that is or has ever walked the face of the earth. The difference is that we have chosen to try and work together and build something better in the world. (when people don't try to overanalize and control everything, that is.)
that was suppose to be "Just open any history book!"
Let's look at the degenerative direction our collective society is headed!
Let's ask ourselves how it came to be!
What used to set society aghast in yesteryear, is recieved today with common acceptance! The minds of our incoming generation are being desensitised to anti-socialism, violence and horror via these computer games and movies!
For the sake of a 'calm' future-generation... I strongly support 'censorship'!
The few this may upset... is trivial when held in comparison!
Who's responsible for keeping violent video games away from children? Simple answer: parents.
It's always the parents responsibility for controlling their child's behavior, including when they don't keep an eye on their kids 24/7. I know, I'm a parent....but my child grew up and already an adult - I only hope I did right by her, but she's on her own now and that's the best way to learn life.
I can only blame the manufacturers of these violent video games, and also blame the TV ads for displaying the junk games on TV to intice the under 18 yr. olds; then I can blame the stores that carry these unprecedented, brain-controlling games that cause kids to spend spentless hours in front of TV/video screens playing stupid and violent games. Sure, some games help use hand-eye control, but come on, people! Let's not get too far with how much "control" these games can cause! Kids already don't read enough at home, less than at school, because of the "computer age" dropped upon us the last 10 years that these kids don't want to read any classic books in libraries - no...they gotta go to video stores and watch the movie first! Or get the video game and "interact" with it! No wonder kids these days have no idea how to put a sentence together, less READ about how to make a sentence! Whomever these geeks are doing to invent these games ought to have their brains zapped with high electrical charges so that they can't even remember how to use a computer - much less using programming in building a video/computer game. It all starts out with the parents, folks, and if they are so mundane and gullible to buy violent video games just because their kids tell them they want one, then they should have never been a parent in the first place. These games should never be on the market for anyone to use - not even adults (some adults can't even handle their own reality....why should they handle an alternative reality?)
It is entirely up to the parents to monitor and decide what their children should watch/play. Manufacturers and distributors are not at fault, because they do not sell violent games (M rating or higher) to minors. If a 12 year old plays violent video games, it's because his parent/s bought it for him/her. 12-year-olds don't have 50 dollars to spend on a video game.
When I think about the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and its rating change from M (mature) to AO (Adults Only), I have to disagree with the decision. There really is no point in the change because no store would sell the game to minors, regardless of the M or AO rating.
As to the people who say violent video games are the cause of school shootings, that's a bunch of bovine fecal matter and they know it. The cause for those shootings is lack of parenting, indifference as to what goes on in the child's life, and lack of common sense. I began playing violent video games at the age of 12. My parents bought those games for me because they knew I could tell the difference between real life and a video game. My brother didn't get to play violent video games until he was 15. My parents just weren't confident in his reasoning skills. To summarize, we both began playing violent video games at an early age and had near-immediate access to firearms. So far neither of us has even considered thinking about taking a gun to school and much less about using it.
Sorry for the long rant, but it angers me when people base their judgement on emotion and not on logic. I'll just end with these words: "It does not take a whole village to raise a child, all it takes is one PARENT".
