Cingular

by marty56 - 5/13/05 9:55 AM In reply to: Cingular Vs. Verizon by djladyg

You are going to get off cheaper by staying with Cingular and theyir rollover minutes and let each one of you have a separate acct. You don't realize how many minutes a college student can rack off a family plan just talking to friends, or better yet let him have his own plan with whomever you go with. That way he will learn to manage his minutes and not eat up the rest of the family minutes.

cingular vs verizon

by tvprobe - 8/5/05 5:28 PM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

I was with AT&T for many years. I live in Maryland and I can tell you the service with Cingular/(AT&T) most of the phones are GSM phones. I was 15minutes from an AT&T store and was promised service (full) by 2004 with new GSM towers going up for the new service. I was constantly calling and complaining of going out in the snow to make phone calls because I could not get service in my home. Then in 2004, they started merging with Cingular. Cingular could not do anything because the merger was not final. AT&T said their hands were tied too and could not help me. I waited for my contract to end and went with Verizon. I have had GREAT Customer care, but beware...if you are a gaget bug like me, only get a 1 yr contract with Verizon.
I like getting the new phones yearly. I thought (like with AT&T) I would be able to get a new phone and pay the amount shown in the stores or online even with a 2 yr contract. No, it doesn't work that way. They will charge you double the amount for the phone. ie. motorola 710 phone 199.00 in store...you would be charged 499.99. If you have a 1 yr contract, you are able yearly to get a new phone for yourself; At a discount price. The rebate of $100.00 isn't worth it to me.
NOTE: Cingular contracts are the same way. Go per year.
Yes, their phones aren't the GSM style phones, but the old school of cell phones are still being used; meaning TDMA,CDMA,Analog, service. Check the service around you. It is nice when you can talk on your cell in your home and not freeze or sweat to death outside because you have no service.
Also I have found out that the GSM service and towers for Cingular have only been around for 3-4 yrs per a rep. of Cingular service.( The store manager of Cingular told me). The older services have been around for over 15 years.
Good Luck,
I liked your question and I hope my info will help you.
Smiles,
Patty A.

CDMA Verizon versus Cingular

by snissley - 6/2/06 8:14 AM In reply to: cingular vs verizon by tvprobe

I thought that the CDMA technology on Verizon is newer and superior to Cingular's GSM technology. Qualcomm developed the CDMA technology in the US.

by jferdy - 9/18/05 12:12 PM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

I have experienced many dead zones in Chicago's North Shore. Verizon, which I now use is excellent through out this area. I am happy I changed.

Cingular customer service

by margaritondo - 9/19/05 1:31 PM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

I, too, like many others in this discussion have been a long time customer of Cingular (previously AT&T Wirelss) here in Chicago. I've had my payments automatically deducted from my checking account. The current months payment did not go through as I forget to notify them of the change in accounts. My fault. But guess what? They turned off my phone service even though the bill is now only 31 days! No phone calls from them. No letters to ask about the payment mix up. They just turned me off and won't turn me back on unless I pay in full plus a $20.00 charge!

I am a corporate customer of 11 years currently with three phones. It's time to change. Should it be Verizon or T-mobile in the Chicago area?

verizon

by kbak28 - 5/22/06 5:40 PM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

I have been with verizon for a while and i am very pleased with the service. If you sign a 2 or 1 year service agreement, you can get great deals on phones. I have the motorola razr v3c with verizon and it is a great phone. You also can receive vcast.

Which is better?

by rossao11 - 3/24/07 12:59 AM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

Ok- I have had Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, T-mobile, Nextel and GTE (back in the day.) I am in a dilema right now because I have Verizon and I am thinking of switching back to Cingular. Here is the deal Verizon's service is good, not great, but really good. Now I have the Motorola Q phone, which has been nothing but a big pain in the butt, I'm on my third one now! Its a new phone and I think its just trying to do to much, it freezes, loses signal strength, drops calls and uses Windows Mobile 5.0, which I am not a big fan of. The internet download and Windows MEdia part is really 50-50. Verizon is also a CDMA network, which means you can't take it out of the country. The rest of the world uses GSM, so that means Cingular and T-mobile, can work internationally! Sprint is a TDMA network which is even older, but it will probably have service in really remote places like say Death Valley, CA. T-Mobile is just plain outright horrible as far as service, unless you live in major urban downtown centers like LA or NYC. My wife has Cingular, with a cheap Motorola phone and she always has service and it always sounds crisp and clear; she'll have all full bars and I'll have 1 or 2. I live in San Francisco and her phone always works in the BART (train system,) especially in the underground stations, where mine won't work at all. It will work in the above ground stations. Sooo, I travel out of the country alot and I would love to take my phone with me anywhere in the world. Verizon's customer service is really good, their people know what they are talking about and won't pass the buck on you 90% of the time. Frankly, they all have their problems, it just depends on what your needs are, and I need an iPhone to sync with my Macbook Pro and go internationally. If you're in the US mainly, then go with Verizon, just don't get the Moto Q, LG is really good or the Palm Treo!

Cingular vs Verizon

by chuburnaman - 3/31/07 11:29 AM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

For anyone who has had both carriers this decision boils down to a few things.
--By far the best reception AND customer service is Verizon, hands down. I travel extensively around the US and have never had reception issues with Verizon, especially while roaming.
--I also travel extensively internationally, and this would be the main reason to consider Cingular. Verizon has little if any service internationally. I own a seperate phone for this purpose.
--Cingular has some great phones, but as stated above, if you can't get reception, beautiful phones with alot of features aren't much good.
Hope this helps someone make decisions.

Why I dropped Cingular

by Ros2004 - 4/1/07 5:48 PM In reply to: Cingular vs Verizon by chuburnaman

Sorry about the long post...

I was an AT&T customer and was one of those people who believed the Cingular hype when they said that the merger would enable them to draw on the huge resources of both networks and they offered a free phone upgrade for a two-year contract. I had been quite happy with my AT&T service (after a nightmare experience with WorldCom) and the old phone was fine, but I was told that I would need the new phone to be able to get the full benefits of the new service. It also had some cool features, such as a camera.

I received the new phone just before I started a new job downtown in Washington, DC. I found that I was unable to get any reception almost anywhere in the building where I worked (the Ronald Reagan Building, for those who are familiar with DC), even next to the windows. Of course, I couldn't get coverage in the Metro subway, but I didn't really expect to. Since I hadn't started the job when I still had the old phone and service, I didn't have anything to compare the new phone to, and thought it must just be the building. However, I was also traveling out of town quite a bit, and found I was getting no signal in many of the hotel rooms where I was staying and even in restaurants. I also had no coverage inside large stores, and sometimes even outside if I went under an archway or anything.

At the same time, a colleague who had the same phone model and service was able to get reception in parts of the building where I couldn't, so I came to the conclusion it might have been my particular phone. After a number of calls back and forth with Cingular during which I had my phone reset several times, they also came to the same conclusion and sent me another (refurbished) phone. This phone looked old and the backlight only stayed on for a few seconds during calls, but the coverage did seem to be marginally improved but I was still unable to get a signal in most parts of the office building.

I no longer work in that building but in other places the coverage seems to have improved slightly over the last two years but I still don't think it is as good as it was with AT&T and I can't use it at all in Metro stations and on trains. I've seen other people using cell phones in the Metro and since I spend a number of hours a week commuting, I feel I really need that convenience.

My contract expired recently and after doing some research I decided to switch to Verizon. I only received the phone the day before yesterday, so haven't been able to try it everywhere, but was able to try it out on the Metro. Except for a few "no signal" areas in tunnels further away from Washington DC, I was able to get a signal and make calls both while on the train and at the station.

my experience w/cingular

by stingmom8 - 4/10/07 7:27 PM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

We were loyal customers of cingular for 8 years & had never had any problems until late 2006-that is when we found out how atrocious their customer service is, or has become. My kids had the same phone & in late '06 they began having similar problems. My daughter, though, could not make calls & received calls went straight to voicemail, her phone constantly showed no signal bars and she was having issues w/her screen displays. Because she couldn't use it, we returned hers for a replacement (which was quick & easy). A few weeks later, we also received a letter stating her phone was water damaged & we were being billed $150 (these were free phones to begin with). I e-mailed them to dispute this as she has always been very careful with her phone, my son was also experiencing some of the same problems & told them of the problems I was having with mine; I also asked what it would cost to get out of our contract 8 mos early. They replied but did not address ANY of the problems we were having and just said it would cost $150 per phone to get out of the contract. I felt like they were saying "ha! ha! the joke's on you-we could care less what the problem is but it's going to cost you $450 if you want to leave!" I called them to cancel the contract and told the rep about all of the problems we had experienced over the last several months. She read the e-mail and-all of a sudden-she was willing to replace all 3 phones, credit back the $150 for the replacement, plus other enticements to get me to stay. However, I kept thinking "where was all this when we were having the problems? why did it take cancelling the contract before they were willing to do anything? what kind of customer service is that?" I declined because if I have to threaten to go elsewhere to get problems fixed, that is not the kind of company I want to do business with.
Now, to be fair they do have some good things-rollover minutes and good coverage. But if you have a problem that needs rectified-watch out! Think twice about switching to a carrier that could care less about their customers.

Is anyone still reading this thread?!

by Kittypretty - 7/1/07 7:36 PM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

Kris, who did you go with and how did it work out? I've been kinda mad at Cingular over my current phone which I loathe and I'm not sure if I should switch to Verizon or stick with Cingular - now ATT again.
What has me a little worried is in the last week I've heard two negative remarks about Cingular. One was in regard to the iPhone - what I read said how cool and wonderful the phone is but how unfortunate that it's sold only by ATT. The other was a joke by Jay Leno the other night - he was talking about the almost car bomb in London - he said the bomber was to activate it with a cell phone but couldn't get a signal since he was with Cingular. What to do? Anyone?

Cingular Versus Verizon

by chuburnaman - 7/2/07 5:31 AM In reply to: CINGULAR v VERIZON- the pros and cons by krisharris

I thing anyone making this decision needs to do a little homework. Simple decision. What services do you want? If good cell phone reception, without all the bells and whistles, I would go with Verizon. I have had there service for 3 years and have had good reception from Maine to the Carribean. With all the hype around the IPhone, they are really interested in getting new business and keeping customers. I recently received a offer for a free LG Vx8700, a normally $100 plus phone. Great phone with very good reception.
Make sure you take advantage of their 30 day free trial. If you aren't satisfied, just return the phone and they will give you another phone to try or tear up your contract.
Oh, and if you are willing to pay a little more, they do have one year contracts. Something Cingular won't do.

Cingular or Verizon

by Kittypretty - 7/2/07 5:53 AM In reply to: Cingular Versus Verizon by chuburnaman

When I had Verizon I could not get a signal in my office. There was another building that I was in once a year for a banquet where I also could not get a signal. With ATT/Cingular I have not had that problem. I have called home from across the country and from the Carribbean on both also with no problem. I just returned from Las Vegas (I live in the Northeast) and could not believe the clear signal and call quality and no problems at all. However, when I'm on the highway a mile from home there's no signal. Go figure. I can't say I've had any problems with them until my current phone actually - a Nokia 6061. If I'm at a ballgame for instance I can't hear. I so envy all the other people around me who have no problem. I have actually started to ask strangers what phone they have and what company. One thing I'll never do again is purchase a phone online. This was my first time - never again. ATT/Cingular IS considerably cheaper and their coverage area (my area anyway) is much larger than Verizon. While I had Verizon originally my hubband had ATT and he was always getting all sorts of freebies and offers - I got nothing in the way of customer appreciation from Verizon. However that all stopped with Cingular.
