Driving Distractions

by ldtaylor - 8/2/05 4:54 PM In reply to: What is the biggest threat to safe driving? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I drive a full sized van with 16'' wheels. (The seat is 42'' from the ground.)I can look down on the car passing me at 10-15 miles above the speed limit while the driver is talking on a cell phone and punching or reading information from the laptop on the seat. If this were a one-time observation on I-75, I-71, or I-90, it would not be so bad. But I see it once or twice every 100 miles or so, different cars and drivers. It is particularly bad along I-75.

OTHER: what about the BACKSEAT driver?

by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator - 8/2/05 10:39 PM In reply to: What is the biggest threat to safe driving? by Marc Bennett Moderator

One of my distractions while I drive is the backseat driver--namely my wife :D. And now that my 2 year old son has come of age where he can comprehend speed and motions in the car--he also has opinions of his own... ''Daddy don't drive so fast'', ''Daddy why is the car moving so slow?'', ''I don't like that song'', etc... That makes two backseat drivers for me :(.

It's bad enough that there are pretty awful drivers that I have to pay attention to on the road, but when you add my two co-pilots to tell me what to do and not to do...it can drive a sane man, mad! Just my 2 cents worth.

Poor Lee! The things we do for love!

Actually your son is starting to pay attention to the traffic and this is your chance to begin his driver's education. My daughter just turned 20 today and she started learning about driving at a very young age, just as my dad did with me. She has become a better driver than me... so she tells me. LOL!

When another driver screws up try not to vent instictively but tell your son what that person did that was wrong... that could have caused an accident. Eventually it becomes a game and your son can tell you what was done wrong first! Include each and every detail. Son, I need to turn left up here at the light. What do I need to do? (turn signal, get into the left turning lane) It's just like so many other things we have to teach our children: cause and affect.

When my daughter was 11 yrs old we had a small acreage and she really learned how to drive on the lawn tractor. The land was flat and safe. This gave her the feel of what driving is all about.

Now for the wife. Once you've had enough of the driving suggestions try to quietly, calmly get out of the car and go to the passenger's side. Motion for her to drive. If she doesn't want to drive maybe this will get her to understand she's not helping with her distractions.

Illegal Aliens Who Lack Insurance and Cause Accidents

by dobbsj - 8/2/05 5:00 PM In reply to: What is the biggest threat to safe driving? by Marc Bennett Moderator

For example in TX they don't have insurance. They get a ticket and they use another fake DL.

Damn politicians don't do a thing. Wait tell you get in an accident with one. They will laugh at you. That is unless they steal from you.

Ummmm

Let me get this straight. You're saying that the biggest THREAT to SAFE DRIVING are Illegal Aliens? So drunk citizens, citizens talking on phones, bad citizen drivers, oh ...and bad driving LEGAL aliens... are LESS of a threat than...ummm...illegal aliens. Ooooo..Kkkkkk

Post 216 of 425

Agreed.

I agree with you on this...illegal aliens...I think someone is high...

Bad drivers WITH cell phones!!

by lungfixer - 8/2/05 5:01 PM In reply to: What is the biggest threat to safe driving? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Even a good driver is not 100% when talking on his/her phone...but take into consideration the , non-attentive moron who is talking on their phone while sipping their coffee, shuffling through their CD's and steering with their knee...I'VE SEEN IT!!

People need to wake up and realize that driving a car is a PRIVLEDGE, NOT A RIGHT. And until our system of licensing drivers in the United States is changed to something that requires more than a heartbeat and an IQ that borders mild-retardation to obtain a license...drivers will NEVER change.

My 11-year-old daughter could pass the written DMV exam...but I sure as hell wouldn't give her the keys to my car!!

I agree

by hailutt2 - 5/11/06 7:33 AM In reply to: Bad drivers WITH cell phones!! by lungfixer

Though there may be those out there with...a notion that nothing bad will ever happen to them, others are smarter. And because of those teens who can't seem to get it through their thick skull that they are not invinsible, they do stupid things. That in turn causes other teens to be held back from driving, even though they ARE capapable of doing so responsibly. Don't you think they should be allowed to take a driver's exam to see if they can handle the road? And if they can't, they can wait to get there license, and car. If having a cellphone is the problem, then they should be off while driving, or at least not in your ear. Idiots like that can go ahead and get themselves killed, but if we don't want that to happen, we should ban THEM from driving, not taking it out on those who don't deserve it. Personally, I really think that politicians are taking this too far by pushing up the driving age. I know plenty of 16-year-olds who are responsible drivers, and plenty who aren't (clowns, if you ask me). So really, should we punish and reprimand those who don't deserve along with those who do? I think not.

What about smokers? Or eaters? Should we ban that, too?

by RTL44 - 8/2/05 5:07 PM In reply to: What is the biggest threat to safe driving? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I am so tired of more and more legislation trying to control everything we do. So, now some people say that using cell phones while driving is unsafe. How about smoking while driving? Finding a cigarette, lighting it, extinguishing it, etc. How about eating while driving, or drinking a cup of coffee? How about appliying makeup, or trying to look at a map while driving? I guess we should ban two-way radios from emergency vehicles, too. It is much too dangerous. Where does it end?

Doesn't anyone see that you could go on and on with this and it just comes down to common sense?

Some people are able to multitask effectively, some are not. Why punish those who are able to effectively concentrate on more than one thing?

Perhaps the answer is to have tougher standards with which we are able to obtain a license.

Anyway, in my opinion, it's not cell phones that should be banned, it's bad drivers.

I agree completely, but...

by hailutt2 - 5/11/06 8:40 AM In reply to: What about smokers? Or eaters? Should we ban that, too? by RTL44

...if we ban drivers, how are we going to get around? Bycicle? Isn't that dangerous too? Should that also be banned? How are we going to get our food before it spoils? Farm? Isn't that also dangerous? Are just supposed to starve, or die of bordom? I thought the idea was to stop death, not insinuate it. If you ban drivers, how do you expect to live?

Your right, it does come down to common sense. But you can't ban drivers just because they don't have it. As the saying goes: Common sense isn't.

Common sense?

Drivers AND Pedestrians Need to be Off Phones in Traffic!

by mrmanfam - 8/2/05 5:13 PM In reply to: What is the biggest threat to safe driving? by Marc Bennett Moderator

It seems that, more and more, whenever I see a driver do something stupid in the car, he always has a cell phone on his ear. One time I was in a supermarket, and a lady crashed into me with her CART because she was on cell phone while she shopped! But I definitely wish they would outlaw PEDESTRIANS from being on a cell phone in a parking lot or while crossing the street. How many times has a pedestrian on a cell phone walked in front of my car and NEVER even knew I was there! I KNOW a lot of people had this same experience.

SUV or MinVan's loaded with children weaving in traffic

by melspc - 8/2/05 5:40 PM In reply to: What is the biggest threat to safe driving? by Marc Bennett Moderator

How safe is it with a load of children in a SUV or Minivan to drive at 70 miles an hour or more?
I drive the interstate to work 5 or 6 days a week
I'm on it for 30 miles
And more I'm amazed at people passing me in these tanks loaded with children weaving in and out of traffic like they are a Nascar driver or mebbe a better description is Demolition derby driver.
Now I ain't doing the speed limit either and these people are passing me like I'm standing still.
Weave in front of tractor trailers they don't care I've come upon a few wrecks and I read in the newspaper or see on the news how terrible it was.
I know they caused it by driving like a moron
sometimes I wonder if i shouldn't say something to the cops
