How Much Did 'I' Pay? for my confuser you ask???

by todde_ - 7/23/05 3:40 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your computer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Well, this is not the first computer I have ever purchased. The one I am using now is a laptop. Matter of fact, it is an HP Pavilion ze5170 with a 2Ghz Pentium 4 desktop processor in it and it is running XP Home. I bought it at auction from UBid as a manufacture refurbished for $1,200.00, about 2 1/2 to 3 years ago. Quite a find at the time. It has served me well, although the battery life has left much to be desired. Usually a little over 2 hours, but those are a strong 2 hours, not the dim monitor and everything shut down.
As for a Desktop machine, I build my own. Sometimes I wonder why not go to Dell Or Gateway and have them build me a state of the art machine for less than I pay to build my own. Then I find out that the machines they build can rarely be upgraded, and that they use proprietary parts even on some motherboards. Then I remember why I enjoy, and need to build my own machine. I can start out at lets say Dell with an $800 machine and by the time I have added all of the options I need for it to be a viable machine for me, I am well over $2000.00 . This is usually just the CPU, no monitor, printer, mouse or keyboard. Since I like it the way I want it I feel I am just going to have to keep building my own so I will have the best machine I can afford, that is upgradeable and somewhat future proof. You can not put a price on a machine you can upgrade that you don't have to buy a new motherboard just to be able to install more RAM.
So until I can afford something like Alienware's line of machine that are upgradeable from the factory, or Falcons line that will let you send your machine in every once in a while for a system upgrade, I will remain the system builder, network administrator and the Tech support for all of the problems along the way. And there have been a few. With the help of forums such as the one here and at PCMag, Maximum PC, the late great TechTV and a few others, I will continue to build and learn. Thank you guys for all of your knowledge with past problems and for future times when I am unable to boot! Yes I have had very long nights learning about computers, but I do enjoy this hobby and my friends say I am good at what I have done for their machines. I hardly ever charge, that is probably it...
As Always Your Friend, todde_

How much did you pay for your computer

by baddle - 7/23/05 4:27 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your computer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I got mine on ebay for a buck, but when you add shipping charges it actually cost me $36.00. Now if you add in all the bad deals and junk i bought before i finally got it, then thats another $250 to $300. But still it was less than $500. It is an IBM and is tough as nails, it has to be to survive with me for the past two years. Yes it is old and slow but so am I so we get along just fine. That mule, old rivers and me.

Compaq 5310US

by DaSpEcTeR - 7/23/05 7:57 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your computer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I got my first computer, a stock Compaq 5310US when I was in 6th grade. It's been four years now and it's still running perfectly. It's excelent for average computer tasks. My father paid $1200 for it at Circuit City. We were able to get free dial up internet for a year. I wasn't able to get the $200 rebate since at the time HP bought Compaq. It was forgivable though. All in all compaq is the way to go and I would gladly buy an HP Compaq. All my specs are in my profile.

How much did I pay? Over $3K

by joerog55 - 7/23/05 9:38 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your computer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

It was a Sony VAIO RZ71G purchase in Japan with full multimedia features including Gagapocket and two DVD burners, and lots of bells and whistles. P4 3.06 Ghz clock. It was right when P4 went over 3Ghz so I expected it to be expensive. Sure is a lot cheaper now. Prices of computers and peripherals in Japan only now are starting to coming down, thanks to Internet competition, but historically about 1 1/2 to 2x higher than Stateside. However, I got very good software bundled with it and it was in Japanese which I wanted because my work is done in both languages.

in 1999 i paid 900 euro (don't know how much $ that is...we didn't have euro's than.in guldens (Hfl)it was about 2000),that was incl. the monitor and windows 98SE.later on i upgrade it to work faster.and that costed me about 400 euro's.BUT:for that money i had an almost complete new PC! : hard disk,motherboard,videocard,soundcard,dvd-rom.AND they installed some old stuff that still works fine,my old harddisk (only 8 GB),my floppydrive and cd-burner.for THAT time (i guess it was 2001)it was a very nice price in the Netherlands!nowerdays pc's are much cheaper, incl.the monitor, printer, scanner and if they have to:a new mother in law... :)

Build and Upgrade my computer

by jazzy5 - 7/24/05 6:47 AM In reply to: How much did you pay for your computer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

My first computer cost $500. If was part of a class my wife was taking on accounting. It was a 486 with 4 meg of memory and no CD-Rom, sound card. Just basic computer. After her curse fininsh, I started to upgrade it thru the years, more memory, sound card, cd-rom, etc. My first major upgrade cost me $300. New motherboard, chip, memory and video card. I keep upgrading it thru the years and still using it since 1993. Is max out to the motherboard potential and still runs almost all the programs today with exception the newer games.

My second computer I build it from scratch. I won from AMD a motherboard and Ahtlon chip. Bought a case, memory which is cheap now and DVD dual burner, always on sale. It is not the top of the line but it can keep up with all games now and posible for the next couple of years. The most money I spent for a single item was my first printer. It cost me $300 in 1995. It still working, but I swear I will never ever again spent that kind of money on computer related item.

My third and fourth computer were free. Where my wife works (Car Dealer), they got tired of fixing these new computers and decided to thrash them. My wife ask not to throw them away and give them to her. She gave it to me, I fixed them and now I got four computer running in my network for the whole family.

So I never pay more than $500 for a computer to use. But if you add all the upgrades thru the year, I probably spend around $1,000 since 1993 thru 2005 for 4 running computers. Can you beat that?

by suseeq - 7/24/05 9:40 AM In reply to: How much did you pay for your computer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

It was over $2,000.00 and it was a Dell after having a HP crash shortly after garantee was up left a bitter taste in my mouth and cost over $2,000.00 as well. And their service was absolutely lousy so I went to Dell who have been excellent.

Old tower overheating. Walked into Office Depot. Closeout on Gateway. Bought it. List ~$900, prob available for ~$700. Seems like a decent price and no regrets so far after 3 days.
