I have an Athlon64 3200+, an ASUS K8V SE motherboard,2 80 gig HDs, an e-GeForce FX 5500 video card, an ACER CD rw/DVD drive, an ACER DVD rw, 1 gig of RAM and a nice clear case with 1 pull and 2 push fans in addition to the power supply and hardware fans. While this may sound hard to believe it is true. I bought it 1 piece at a time and built it. By doing so I saved HUNDREDS!! I highly recommend shoping around and upgrading/building your own computer if you are able. If you are upgrading, Norton Ghost will prove Very useful and came with the hardware ( I don't remember what it came with) as well as many other useful programs. If you don't like buying components over the internet then look for private individuals who build computers for a living. I had good luck getting them to sell individual components if they didn't know I was building a computer rather then replacing a defective component. I hope you have as good luck as I did!
When my wife get's a new machine from her employer(every 2 years), she passes her old machine to me. So I get a decent laptop free every couple years. It works out nice for a househusband like me.
Cheers,
BV
I set several goals for my pc,the main goal was 'built-in upgrade-ability!
I basically wanted to have my own style of 't-vo' and be reasonably sure that in 5 years I could still be in the running with the industry.
Here are the specs;
Motherboard
Asus p4p800 FSb deluxe
3.2 ghz Prescott processor
512 DDR3200 ram
130 g hd
120 g hd
ATI All-in-Wonder 9600 AGP
I can pipe the sound through my DTS system via a fiber
optic (SPDIF)connection
and
I have as soon as I finish studying about the WiFi transmission connection I will experiment with that protocol.
I have dyslexia and I orginally build my computer to 'read' to me. (I'd like to pass my English courses, or any courses that require reading, for that matter)
I am currently in the 'sunset' years of my life and have literally 'grown' up with the computer industry.
and at my age I have developed a MAJOR nose for a computer bargan!!! My whole system came in a a price of only 1500. spread over a 10 year depreciation rate, I think I made out like a bandit!!!
And,
Thanks for asking...Have a great day...I really enjoy your column

Have had no Windows XP Home problems except when tried to install Service Pack 2 that was the original update downloaded directly from Microsoft. The update caused the Printers utility to stop functioning entirely.
i paid 657.00 with tax for my hp pavilion 4 years ago and i love it.

Second hand PIII 800mhz COMPAQ Deskpro off ebay. No regrets aside from the fact that the moterboard's onboard sound, PS2 dont work only about two months after I brought it.
Paid $240AUD, brought over other systems pimarily becuase a full, legal unpirated copy of Win XP came with it.
I can't say because I build my own and they are constantly being updated. Everything matches, works well and I always can reach my tech service ![]()
Computer HP Pavilion 7905.
I loved this question!
My 5-year old pc was obviously over-priced by today's standards, but the question reminded me of the farmer's axe. "This is the best axe I've ever had", said the farmer. "It's had 3 new heads and 4 new handles, but it's the best axe I've ever had."
After replacements of memory, hard drives, floppy drives, keyboards and modems ... the the addition of USB ports, optical mice, an auxiliary hard drive and add-on CD burner ... I have no clue what the thing has cost. However, I do knowit is the best computer I've ever had!

Two weeks ago this Compaq was advertised at CompUSA for $299.00 after rebate which included a monitor and printer.
No one - I mean no one - can build a PC any cheaper cause the parts listed anywhere in the world cost more than $500.00 without the 17" monitor and HP Printer.
You know when folks say they built their own for less than $500 they can never list where and how much each part cost.
So, with this 80 Gig HD and DVD Player I can watch movies while cooking my Cajun Gumbo.

I bought parts only and built my own. Everything new except where noted. I got all this for less then $500 aprox 2 years ago:
Intel P4 3.02GHz
2GB RAM (2 x 1GB sticks)
Gigabyte MB that supports ATA, SATA, ATA raid and SATA raid (up to 12 DVD/CD/or Hard Drives total)
200GB EIDE new
160GB EIDE used(on the ATA raid set to std. ATA the other two HD's and DVD drives are on primary and secondary IDE)
120GB EIDE used
2 Memorex 8x DVD+-R drives
1 1.44MB Combo floppy/ 7 in one flash reader
An add in PCI 8 port USB card for a total of 14 USB ports on board.
128MB ATI Radeion All in Wonder with TV Tuner
on board sound, on board NIC, on board modem
Black Wave Master case by Cooler Master
6 80mm low noise case fans
480W Power supply (About to be replaced with a 600W Noisetaker.
Windows XP Pro.
All the above for just short of $500 by shopping all over the net one piece at a time. It took 4 months to get all the parts I needed but I did stay with in my budget. Everything external I already had, wireless keyboard & optical mouse, 19 inch LCD I got in trade for wireing a freinds office to network 4 computers
and a $200 set of speakers I already had, and lastly my 4 year old HP all-in-one printer. All in all not to bad for $500
I have a good source of parts and enjoy assembling or ypgrading my own computer.
