OK so here's the deal. I am planning to buy an mp3 player, and I need the opinion and advice from the people. Which mp3 player is better, the Sony NW-HD5 or the 30gb ipod??
What I want you to focus is on capacity and sound quality. I have a very big songs collection, and I don't want to have problems while storing them on the mp3 player, and I don't want to lose the songs original quality. Other things like battery life and gadgets are also important, but my main concern is disk storage and sound quality. So help me out, which one is better? Which one should I buy?
Hey I saw your posting and wanted to help you out. I have for the past month exchanging Mp3 players for the fact that I haven't yet found the right one. I have purchased Ipod photo 30 gb (great sound, gets loud, not worth the money for a lousy 65k screen), Sony NW-HD5 (smaller than Ipod, screen looks prettier on the Cnet's review than when seen in person, not loud enough), VGF-AP1L (nice 262k screen, doesn't get loud, had to navigate with the touchpad, too many wires, earpiece not long enough, must use wired remote control supplied, huge) and the Mini ipod. Well so far the Ipods far better, they sound great, get really loud and the sound quality is just awesome. I am a huge Sony fan, everything I own is made by Sony, Home theater system, tv, laptop, desktop, etc etc. But Sony Mp3 players are pretty bad. They have clear sound and good bass but they just don't get loud enough. Even with the most expensive earphones, if you are in a crowded area you won't get the sound desired ( I guess Sony has an agreement with those help the deaf associations and they have a limit to their sound which to me was pretty low). So after trying all those, I went and got the Ipod Mini, it is small, sounds just like the big Ipod, it looks prettier too (the silver one). So if I were you I would get the Ipod, just make sure you get the HP Apple Ipod, it is the same as the ones made by Apple but you will have the HP warranty. What's the difference? The difference is that with Apple you have 90 days to call customers service after that you have to pay to talk to them and they charge $49.99 for that (an absurd right?), HP you can call customer's service as much as you want for a year and after your warranty expires you can contact customer's service through e-mail. Sony's customer service are pretty bad too, sometimes you have to wait 30 minutes to talk to someone there, and they know just as much as you. Conclusion, go with the Ipod, I know from experience. Just wanted to help you out...Good luck
thanks for your advice, but I think I am leaning for the sony hd5. I saw a comparation of al the hard drive mp3 players, and well the hd5 won. Here's the link. Also the user's rating of the hd5 is higher than the ipod's one. I ll wait for the editorial review jsut to be sure

But I think I ll wait for the new 30 gb hd5, I dont know when it will be out, but if you know tell me plz.
Well thanks anyway
The I-Pod Photo, while it does "go louder", sounds just plain lousy. If you wanted good loud sound you'd probably be best off with the Sony and a set of earbuds that doesn't take much power, or the Sony along with a headphone amp. ![]()
You really ought to stay away from the I-Pod.
I have Sony HD5 for couple of weeks and i love it very much. I use it to listen to all my CD collection (not MP3) because i am kind of perfectionist and won't settle with any sound less than CD quality. I think CNET review is fair. I will never be able to distinguish between CD and Atrac3Plus 256K (i use the minimum compression for the best quality). I completely dissagree with weak sound that everybody says. I mean as long as you have the right headphone you should be fine. I use Shure E3C and planning to buy E4C. With this headphone, you will hear music at its best. I never turnt the volume more than 75% because i am afraid to damage my hearing. Go figure how loud this thing can get. One thing i do not like about sony is its Sonicstage program. It is just slow, abrupt, and not easy to use. I am a computer programmer, i think Sony should revise this program as soon as possible. The other very important reason i buy HD5 is because of its replacable battery. It just gives me the comfort in my mind that i can listen to it for years to come.
so sony is better, then how about sony hd5 vs iaudio x5l?
Depending on how you are going to use them. If just for music either one is good. Both have top notch audio quality. Sony is smaller and works with Sony subscription. iAudio may support subscription with next firmware update. Both are available with long battery life and high quality apparent durable cases.
I choose iAudio X5 because of:
1. USB Host - double as storage for my photo trip
2. Wide selection of encoding format, i.e. FLAC lossless.
3. No proprietary software needed - drag and drop in Windows Explorer
4. Tree structure file arrangement instead of id3 database for simplicity and more logical to me. I play classical most of time. So I am album based.
I had a very hard look on HD5 before discovering X5. To me, both devices are more interesting (practical) over iPod. I think both have much ore mature look. But it may be just me (My wife likes the look of iPod but she does not care about audio or quality). Some of X5 features I don't care about and may never use: play video, view photos (maybe just some fun logo pics).
Both are good. If just for music, I may get HD5 if the price is right.
Have fun
Hey I already own an ipod thank God I didn;t pay for it... I'm a huge apple fan 50% of my electronics are made by apple but their ipod suck..The battery life sucks...sound not to bad, with a 20GB ipod u can only get 5000 songs but with the sony you can get 13,000... thats a huge gap... my friends owns the sony, yes it is a little slower in selecting music as comapred to the ipod's click wheel apart from that it beats the ipod... Removable battery, and forget all those features like FM or photo i get an mp3 player just to listen to music. The screen is beautiful. Hey But am not sure apple makes 30GB mp3 players...this is from their history cos i've been checking.. so we just gotta stick withr the 20gb but am still gonna wait till middle september just to make sure b4 I buy.
