AFTER rebates, my notebooks' net cost was $499. NO, I have no regrets since it's value before instant and mail-in rebates was twice that much.
Just make sure you follow TO THE LETTER, the rebate instructions so that you don't get 'rejected' for the rebate offer. (I'm not a big fan of mail-in rebates, but I choose wisely and make copies of everything I send as a backup in case of a problem.)
I just moved from Gateway to Dell at the insistance of our Corp IT guy...even though it was for my personal use computer...I got a Dell XPS Gen 4 and it sucks, I use it for home office and the kids play online games, the mouse is sluggish at best, the computer is slow, customer support is non existant, I have had the thing 60 days and have been unable to get to the XPS support Center for Small business but 3 times and I call daily....For the $3000 I paid for this machine, I can guarentee my next machine will be a Gateway....Dude Don't get a Dell
My experience with Dell over the years has been much the same. Too expensive for what you get, mediocre service, proprietary hardware, etc.
Do yourself a favor and build your own computer. It isn't that hard, and there are all kinds of people who will help you get over the hurdles of your first time build. You'll end up with three times the machine for the money.
I haven't run a store bought PC since IBM put out the 286AT model.
I also have just switched to Dell.I however bought an 8400 & upgraded the package through the Dell web site when I purchased.I now have an 8400 that is twice the computer of the XPS gen 4,at approx half the price. Good luck...AC
My current computer cost me $3,416. At the time I bought it (6/13/02) it was the bling-blingiest thing you could buy in a Gateway computer (Gateway 700XL). It has an Intel 4 2.533Ghz, 1 Gig of Ram, 128 MB NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti-4600G w/TV out video card. It also has a 120 gig HD, a 40X CD-Rw, 1X DVD-Ram/R drive and came with GW Boston Acoustics 5 piece speaker system and an HP ScanJet 5400C Scanner.
With a bit a sweat equity, anyone can put together 2ghz or above system for well under $500. The hardest part is making the various connections to the motherboard's jumper pins.
The only other puzzle can be deciphering the motherboard manual. You'd think, at this point, that they could find a tech writer who was actually fluent in English.
a bit of this is a bit of that
who knows what brand - the name on the case and the keyboard is Ploojk got it - a winner for sure.
Hey i got i feb 2004 - xp system 80 hard drive 512 mem 2700 speed ( i think), 17'' flat screen (LG), it works ok no probs since i got it. i only use it at home for internet - nothing else. the usual attachments - speakers, a regular cd drive (52X) - nothing spectactular. I'm satisfied. This shop (one of hundreds) takes your specs and builds it while u wait (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)- Have a nice day!
I paid 2195.00 plus extra charges for Sony's PCV-RZ22G 2 years ago and it was worth every bit of it. My little beauty can do everything except cook dinner and turn down my bed. I have used everything from Compaq to Toshiba and the Sony Vaio wins hands down. My dream machine is kept in pristine condition and I treat her like a prized lady should be. Clean, mean and smooth running machine.
I'd been saving to build a PC to replace our 6 year old Dell. As a system administrator I was on the Dell site at the beginning of this month (new fiscal year) checking out prices so I could put together my budget request for replacement PCs. I noticed a glitch on the Dimension 3000 configuration where all the hard drives cost the same and the better the optical drive, the more it deducted from the price.
When I got home that night, I went to our Dell Employee Purchase Site and configured and ordered a Dimension 3000 (granted, not the motherboard I would have chosen if building my own, but this was where the glitch was) with a 3 GHz P4 with 800 FSB and 1 MB Cache, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB HDD, DVD/CD burner plus a second DVD Rom drive (adding that deducted $100 from the price :)), with XP Media Center 2005. After it added in a free printer and a shipping discount for our employee purchase program, it cost $455 shipped.
I may have been able to build one a little cheaper, but not with an OS, especially not the Media Center version as it's not available to the public. So far, it's faster than I thought it would be, and we love it.
I have been building my own PCs for years. I enjoy doing it and find that it can be cheaper (However, Dell does offer some insane deals). Overall, the quality of my homemade system tends to be better than most factory made systems.
ditch your PC's and get an Apple. Zero spyware, no crashes, easy to use, easy to operate, super quiet and looks like a space computer.
I have been using top end PC's for years, 4 months ago I got a mac, yes, spend a lot and the software has me in debt, but I will never use a PC again at home. Trying to convince the IT guys here to get me a MAC. I don't have any PC dependant software even if I did Virtual PC is there.
A.
MY BRO OWNES A MAS G5 & IT'S OUT OF THIS WORLD.NO LOCKING UP OS,VIRUSES,ETC.--I'VE OWENED A GATEWAY FOR 6 YEARS NOW & I'M RETIRING IT 4 A MAC BLUETOOTH W/SUPERDRIVE.IT LOOKS,WORKS,FEELS DIFFERENT.
I took a considerable amount of time (3 months) and finally focused on the IBM ThinkPad T43. 1 gig of RAM a 2 gig Centrino processor. I eRAS into the company WAN and enjoythe speed and wireless capabilities. But, I haven't got the Finger Ident to work (fingers are too dry). Lite weight and a great keyboard fro a laptop.
Less than $500.
How? I built it nyself with the help of the recent CNET course.
Any regrets? None at all, its working perfectly.
Not bad for a 70 year old who didn't even know how to switch a computer on only three years ago, nor particularly wanted to know. I simply wasn't interested.
But I had to take an interest in something after being forced to retire due to health reasons.
