Do it now, upgrade instead of the P4... to an Athlon 64 they've gone down in price considerably and generally smoke P4's too (note I said generally...), if u spend a bit more and go for the X2's the P4's will give u no competition ![]()
I selected $750 to $1000 since I did retain previous owned Printers, Zip drives, etc.
I got the case, processor, and mainboard from local Bricks'n' mortar. Although I later bought the Aria diminutive case from the antec.com site. The sales personnel at a certain Bricks 'n' Mortar failed select a Micro mainboard and also the proper cpu.
Antec seems to have their act together in this current environment and they returned my replies promptly.
They have a real cool video in the Install CD-Rom explaining the merits of "Build It Yourself".
This time I wanted to take some hints from the HGTV suggestions on decorating, since I'm not of that profession.
Some positive input on Hardware,

if you know what your doing it's easy to build a good system.
i upgraded my old Duron 900 box (mobo died) with a package consisting of
AMD Athlon XP2400+, Asus A7V8X-MX-SE mobo and 512Meg DDR333 ram.
i used the same upgrade package for my partners system except with new desktop media case and 40Gig 7200rpm HDD and still payed under $500 for that as well.
bought an "e" machine for under 425.00 including taxes (after rebates) a month ago .... not the top of the line, but I got tired of always adding, upgrading and tinkering with my old computers.
Has a celeron "D" 2.93 ghz processor dvd dbl layer burner, 512 ram, and 80 gb hdd. It came with a 17" monitor and a printer.
just wondering. what kind of video card does it have?
And it's still going strong! I've seen brand new systems that didn't work this well.
I bought a GATEWAY 64-460 I worked by email with a Gateway rep to help me decide what was best for me. I wanted the best, but didnt know what the best was. I told him i wanted it to be able to web surf, design greeting cards and send email. He made up a package for me and my cost was over $5,000. I was very dissatisfied, half the things he put in the package are still in their gateway binder cause i have no need for them or don't know how to use them. I wanted a back up he said i didnt need one. I got very little support from gateway through their support help even tho i paid 200.00 extra for an extended warranty. My cd burner worked only sporadically and they just kept telling me different things to try when i could get them to help me and finally i gave up and didnt use it. I asked for the biggest hard drive available i got a 14.4 GB and he said that i would never run out of space. I did the first year. I later bought a 2nd HD and use that for all my photos so that helped some. My main HD has only 2.4 GB left and i dont know how to clean that up so i can get more space on it. This Gateway is now over 5 years old and is operating ok but i cant afford a new pc right now. My OS is windows 98. I will never buy another Gateway. I believe I was talked into getting more stuff than i really needed at a price that was too high. Jan
my computer is now four years old and so far, have had only minor problems and had to replace the cd rom drive. it is a hewlett packard and i paid aprox 1700.00 for it new. i am a died in the wool hp fan. i also have a hp laptop i paid 1100.00 four years ago. both computers are still going strong though i admit i sure would love to have updated new hp laptop and pc.
I am also a big fan of HP I have two of them. The first is a 500 Mhz Celeron w/win98 I have had for 5 or 6 years and paid about $500 for, the second is a 2-1/2 yr old 2.53Ghz Pentium 4 512 Mb Ram, and 80 Gb HD with XP home that came in a package I paid about $2000 for. (tower, monitor, printer, + a 1.7Ghz Celeron E-Machine w/256Mb Ram and 40Gb HD which I used to replace my Mother's Digital tower running Win 95.)
I also have 2 other machines I got for free from friends who were upgrading. They both are generic PCs running Win 98,
My dad works for Intel, so he gets a lot of special offers for working there. 2 Years ago they offered to buy us a Dell Dimension 4600 with a flat panel moniter for free! We are very satisfied with its performance.
I bought a Dell Dimension 4300, P4, 20 gig HD, 256 Ram for a little over $900. I have had no problems with it once I got rid of ME and put on XP.
For Can$485 (including taxes) we picked up a new Compaq (Future Shop was having a sale). We're very happy with it.
$500.00 and it is a Compaq Presario.
Surprisingly it's great as comparred to other Compaqs I have had.
I paid about $1700 for it almost two years ago. It's the best PC I've ever owned. The GigaPocket program that allows the TiVo-like recording of TV (with its adjustable screen-size that's "always on top") is perfect for my use.
It's also the quietest PC ever. Every PC should be this quiet.
I run XP/SP2 and use PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator CS and PageMaker 7.0 a lot. These are huge programs but even they don't disturb my use of other things, like watching last night's LETTERMAN on a small inset screen while I work!
I love everything about my Sony desktop.
We paid $1,400 Compaq/Presario & I'd buy another one at any given time. Yes,it crashed 22months after we purchased it,but the memory was way too low. An employee at Best Buy built it for us & we had no clue what or how goes into any of it?? Now we know, he didnt either!! But I like it very well. Weve also had an HP that I also liked, but Compaq a little better. Weve had this & that done to it, but I think that is just part of the Computer world! razen
