No, get one now. There is no reason to wait. Unless the rumors about a new line of iBooks are true and who knows about that.

Science Computer: Mac or Window

My kid has enrolled to college major on Science computer. She need a laptop to learn about programming such as C++ and so on. I though of buying her a Mac. But can Mac run a C++ programming software and other related/ required application for science computer degree course.

But imagine my surprise at the local stores with the HP v2000 series AMD Turion 64-bit with everything but the DVD recorder was all of $699. I'd get the kid one of those and move on.

Hard rumors say early 2006 for some new Intel based Macs. With what I've heard from a developer I see no reason for Apple to delay the change. I would buy an Intel based Mac laptop even at a premium of 2X compared to say HP/Dell.
My rumor mill is saying some units may appear as a "surprise" in 2005. But that's rumor and speculation.
Since my first college kid starts in 2007, the timing couldn't be better.

To your questions: There are many rumors of release of updated iBooks with perhaps a new form factor (widescreen).
The current generation is good, but the biggest thing holding it back (besides the small amount of RAM that comes with it... be sure to get at least 512!!!) is its graphics card. Tiger has technology called CoreImage, and currently CoreImage cannot take advantage of the iBook's graphics card. This will mean less eye-candy in the "dashboard" and less performance if you ever do any video or image editing. Hopefully, Apple will update the graphics card to be a Geforce FX Go 5200, which CoreImage can use.
The current iBooks are 9 months old, which is the longest they have gone without a refresh. Wait until August 1st. If they haven't been refreshed by then, then go ahead and dive in!
