You're OK with your DVD burner.

Dual layer burners are still pretty useless as media is very hard to find and expensive as hell when you can find it.

New Proc.

by garlindethfury - 7/29/05 8:44 AM In reply to: Just about everything by physman

the biggest thing when getting a new MoBo and Proc is that when you do you have to make sure that everything will work well together and have no software or hardware conflicts. i bet if you go online to more foruns you will see that your MoBo is not perfectly compatable with Vid Card.

upgrade that didn't work

by Doc_sean - 7/19/05 10:13 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I let my ISP talk me into an 'ACCELERATOR' up grade, what it was suppose to do was, speed up the download speed of web page's. All it did was speed up the download of SPAM instead of what it was suppose to do. Even my e-amil didn't pick up any speed either of what they claim...Oh, I forgot to mention this so called software was from www2.enter.com.

I even timed it with a stop watch...no difference, but I did notice that after visting about 2 web pages. I had to stop and empty out the cookies and other junk in the temp files, or I would get an 404 error message, or can't find the page you requested.

I think I'll be looking for a new ISP next year, so far theve been all hype.

Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance?

by Supernerd - 7/19/05 11:36 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I upgraded from a AMD500Mhz processor chip to a Celeron 2Ghz processor chip. Sheesh! It was a waste of money, as the new processor was even slower.
My PC would have been faster if I had replaced the chip with a twisted rubber band. :-/

Fans and Heatsinks

by AngryRaisin - 7/20/05 4:28 AM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I brought 3 vantec tornado fans and a thermaltake heatsink for a 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 processor which I sometimes overclock. To their credit the vantec fans did exactly what they were advertised to do, move ALOT of air through my case to cool the processor. Unfortunately I didn't pay to much attention to the 55.2 dB rating of these fans. I mean how loud can a computer fan be? Well, they sounded like a lawnmower in my room. I've since moved on to the Thermaltake Rocker water cooling system which is silent and I think I'm beginning to get some of my hearing back from the vantec fans.

Windows Media Plus

by marg4538 - 7/20/05 6:58 AM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I upgraded to the Winwdows Media Plus when I thought I needed it to do some video editing --- already had two other programs that did the same thing but hadn't really looked at them. I'll be a little more careful the next time!

Windows in general

by JakeChance - 7/20/05 7:36 AM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I think the biggest "upgrade" that doesn't work are the new Windows OSs that always come out. I started out on Windows 3.1 which we eventually upgraded to Windows 95. That was the last time I saw an improvement due to the OS. Before 95 it would litterally take 10 minutes just to load some programs in 3.1, but they would load almost instantly under 95. I still am not sure why that is (if you know I'd like to learn).
I remember getting a ridiculously expensive Gateway in 2000 or something. It was a P3 600 MHz Windows 98 machine which was a huge speed increase over our 486 Windows 95 machine. The problem here was that it was just the fact that this computer had a ton more processing power, RAM, and a video card that increased the speed. A friend of mine got Win ME at some point with similar specs to my computer and there was almost no noticable performace increase. Now I'm running Win XP either on a 2.4 Ghz P4 desktop or XP Pro on a 1.6 GHz Pentium-M laptop. The problem is the hardware improves and becomes afforable for most people but then the new Windows OS comes out which requires more of these system resources. I know Win 98 can't use more than 1 GB of RAM and I bet there is a limit on other things like CPU and video card and MoBoards but I can only imagine how fast 2.4 GHz and 512 MB of RAM would be under the 98 enviroment. Basically as the hardware improves the next OS comes out which really doesn't let the speed show and it just feels the same until the next thing comes out. In fact I think you get a speed decrease installing a new Windows OS on older hardware as its designed to just maintain current speeds on the new stuff.

I regretfully upgraded to Apple Quicktime 7.0 Plus

by Charles Williams - 7/20/05 7:51 AM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I recently upgraded to Apple's Quicktime 7.0 Plus because I had taken video clips with my Nikon 8800 turned sideways. There is fortunately a solution that allows one to turn the video playback (plays in Quicktime) rightside up using only Quicktime "Plus" and 7.0 is the newest version. Sadly, I did that however, at a time where I was already having extreme difficulty getting my new IPOD +HP Photo 30GB to be seen ("sync'd") by iTunes. This completely confounded all my fix attempts until many days later when learned through trial and error that iTunes uses Quicktime to work. By upgrading Quicktime to 7.0 Plus version (for $30.00) I had effectively prevented iTunes from working at all to sync with the IPOD. Apple had no clue and neither did HP. I had to uninstall (rendering video corrections mute) and reinstall iTunes which came with the more limited Quicktime 6.0 plain version!

Inkline's PC Booster and Modem Booster Combo

by jerrodca38 - 7/21/05 12:44 AM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

As soon as I downloaded these from Inkline my computer went crazy and I ended up having to take it into a computer shop to get my computer to boot up again.

Inkline gave me my money back, but it cost me a lot to repair my computer!

Backwards, not ahead

by Bryan Eccleston - 1/13/06 4:48 AM In reply to: Inkline's PC Booster and Modem Booster Combo by jerrodca38

I also installed Inkline's PC Booster and Modem Booster Combo and all the relevant times increased not decreased. Boot-up to Desktop time from 4min 40secs to 4min 50secs, Desktop to e-mail from 10secs to 26secs and Desktop to Internet from 30secs to 38secs. The software claimed some incredible improvements of 120 to 200% but they didn't translate into anything. I contacted Inkline to tell them the programs didn't work and asked for my money back: so far no reply!
