Ram upgrade

Thanks, I did not know that. A computer expert lives right across the street from me. He has XP Pro. I will check with him.

Upgrade that didn't

by scashphillips - 7/19/05 1:56 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Upgraded ME to XP and now my system is a nightmare. It ran better before the upgrade, much better... And I upgraded because it was cheap, 20 bucks. So much for cheap.

Upgrades can create a real mess.

You should back up your data to cds or whatever you have that's removeable and then reformat the drive and do a clean install. This method is more work, to be sure, but it will result in a much more stable system.

(NT) That may be difficult with a $20 cd.

Impossible, actually.

He'll either have to spend $99 for the full XP upgrade cd or uninstall the promotional upgrade and reinstall ME from his restore disk.
ME was the worst OS MS ever cobbled together but OEM installs had the fewest problems, and it sounds like it would be better than what he's got now.

by 68Angst - 7/19/05 1:59 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Got HD via my cable company, and an HD/DVR box. Came with standard component cables, but my TV has a DVI connector, so I ran out and dropp $99 on s set.

I really don't think my poor, human eyes can really see a difference!!

Hands-free cellular phone mic/speaker

by truegenius - 7/19/05 1:59 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I was at a local Target and saw this really cool combo - a universal hands-free mic/speaker for cell phones. The mic part was a sound shield that clamped over the headset speaker; it sent a signal to a speaker that you attached to your visor. The thing worked for about two weeks then crapped out. $19.95 down the toilet. The only cool thing about it is the mic part has a deep blue light when you turn the transmitter on. So for grins I turn it on and pretend I'm at a lounge!

Silly upgrades.

A few months ago I tried to finally get back online after several years due to a divorce and financial problems. I found a CD for my local phone company's dial up and tried to get online. I figured when I could dial in but not see the web pages, I had done something wrong. So after countless calls to the company, still left it unresolved. I somehow became convinced to try DSL, through the same company. When everything was connected, I still got a blank page, though the whole setup was done using a cd and was correct. I had in the meantime, bought a new internal modem, upgraded my cd burner/player and
tried everything else I could (and $$ I had) to fix the problem. Once the DSL was online, I called the help desk, and talked to 2 guy techs who kept telling me "it should be working now." Then a female, who helped several times, then said, "Oh! I know the problem! You have a nasty virus in there! I can see the data downloading from your pc, yup, that's why you are getting online but to a blank page."
After feeling incredibly stupid, spending more money than necessary, and weeks trying to get online, I finally bought one last thing- a virus remover program which wiped out the viruses (there were 9 total) and was back on the web in no time! (I could have used the dial up but by then the DSL had won me over!)

Upgrade that didn't boost performance

by draco_lich - 7/19/05 2:14 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Two things, both on a P233 with 64MB RAM. First was an upgrade from Win98 to Win2K. Using the upgrade option, not a format/reinstall. It's more stable but it takes 10 minutes before the desktop is loaded and ready. And on an already heavily used C: drive this began to cause some problems with the 2GB C: partition becoming almost full. While trying not to have to format and repartition the disk I decided to upgrade the filesystem from FAT32 to NTFS and take advantage of the spanned volume feature. That didn't work. I found out only after the change that spanned volumes are only available for native NTFS partitions. And the FS upgrade is a one-way ticket. The only way back would be to format/reinstall. Score another one for M$.

BFG 6800OC to solve sluggish game performance...

by jer2eydevil88 - 7/19/05 2:27 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I was running an Gigabyte mobo with a seriously damaged chipset but I had no idea that was the problem. I bought a $300 (at the time) graphics card to up the ante in the games. I got no performance increase! I ended up buying a new hard drive next only to find out that the Mobo and PSU were actually bad. Mobo was a last resort and the PSU caught on fire with new mobo.

Got new pc when the old one needed only a new USB MOUSE!!!!!

by pikmee - 7/19/05 2:47 PM In reply to: Tech "upgrade" that didn't boost a device's performance? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I thought the mouse was good , but the USB plug turned out to be screwy .There was no way for me to know this at the time. Now I have 2 nicely running computers and $700.00 less in my pocket . But why didn't the repair man suggest that USB mice give problems and should be replaced ?
