Computer wont turn on!!!

by KoolAce - 7/17/05 10:00 PM

Anybody know what the problem could be? I heard some kind of static in the speakers while the computer was turned off so I turned the power surge the computer was plugged in to off and then switched it back on. when I tried to turn the computer on, the power light would blink and go back off and now it just wont turn on.

Two thoughts

1. check all power connections and cables, also see if there is a light showing on the motherboard. Does the psu fan commence? Hopefully, the problem lies with these connections.
2. If there is no resolution the problem will be due to power supply, motherboard, or cpu failure. Depending on your skill you can hopefully troubleshoot these to find which is the culprit.

I too have this issue

I have a thermaltake 420d i think, and when my pc is turned off it takes forever to get it to turn back on. The power supply is relatively new less than one year i think under 6 months even. But if i just keep trying eventually it does turn on i think it might also be blamed on the switch itself but cannot be sure hoping its not the motherboard its only a year and 6 months old and the cpu was purchased then as well all brand new. any further explanation would be appreciated...

Simple to eliminate the switch

simply open the case, remove the two wires from the switch at the mobo pins. Then with a small flat blade screwdriver momentarily short the two pins together. Remember that it only takes a momentary contact. If you leave the pins connected for about 4 to 5 seconds the system will shut off again. No voltages to worry about.

Check your power Mgt settings in the BIOS to insure that you are shutting the system down rather than putting it into some sleep mode, which many systems have problems recovering from.

Do you unplug or remove power from the power supply when you shut down??? If so that could be your cause. The ATX system keeps 5 volt standby power on the MOBO at ALL times as long the supply has an AC Input. Removing that can get the power control logic screwed up.

Many BIOS have a setting to restore power after power loss. If you enable that function, then you can turn the power to the supply off from a surge protector et al. The system interprets this as a power loss, thus when you turn the surge protector switch back on the system will turn on immediately that way. I power all of my systems that way.

Only thing to consider is if you turn it off, don't turn it back on for about 30 seconds. The logic circuit capacitors need time to discharge to ensure that the logic is in the correct mode when power comes back on.
