Gateway 600YGR - Locks Up
by ajsantucci - 7/8/05 7:05 AMI've had this Gateway boat-anchor of a laptop for almost three years and it will routinely lock up under the following conditions: CPU fan will turn on, CPU will spike to 100%. When it locks up, the CPU fan stays on and power off is my only option. I've run the Task Mgr to see what processes may cause this to happen but have found that if I run any application that spikes the CPU, then I am asking for trouble, and it would be just a matter of time when the whole thing locks up. OS is XP PRO Vers 2002 with latest service pack 2, 512MB memory, Intel P4 Mobile CPU 1.70GHz. There is no BIOS setting for me to regulate the fan and I've installed the OS three times. Gateway support is worthless, and they refuse to take the laptop back for testing. I was thinking of installing XP HOME instead of PRO thinking maybe it will behave differently. I have also thought about replacing the CPU and CPU fan, but I'm not sure how I would go about it or should I send it out for replacement. Thoughts? Advice? Anyone else have similar issues with this Gateway product?

by velcrofog - 7/15/05 2:07 PM In reply to: Gateway 600YGR - Locks Up by ajsantucciThis is a very common Gateway 600YGR problem. I recently fixed it on my own, and in fixing it, created or contributed to a brand new problem (see my recent post). But I wander.
Most likely, the posts holding your heat sink / fan assembly to your motherboard have come loose. The basic trick to fixing it is to take out the motherboard, find screws that: a) fit the threads, b) have a wider head than the holes the posts once attached to, and c) are short enough that you can screw them into the posts from the bottom of the motherboard all the way without taking the screws out of the top. Also, you'll want some heat gel.
