I've had the Rio Riot a few years and it still works great, MP3's and WMA's
Sure, your iPod can play music . . . but can it play videos? My AV420 plays movies on its beautiful 4" TFT LCD display does. It stores my music collection AND my movie collection on its 20GB hard drive. It can also get FM radio on its backlit wired remote, record audio via radio or microphone, record video via its RCA Composite and S-Video inputs, and schedule TV recordings with a DVR functionality. All controllable by a IR remote control as it sits next to my TV. And does 20GB not sound like enough? It's also available in 80GB and a staggering 100GB. Does iPod do any of that? I think not. And how much, might you ask? $360 incl taxes and shipping. Booyah.
i would like to say that their customer support is very good does anybody else have a archos product??
Finally someone posting about an ARCHOS device!
Bought my "Archos Jukebox Recorder 15" on sale in 2002, when I really didn't need it: plain gear lust. (It had already been replaced by the newer model, including USB 2.0 instead of 1.0 ...)
It has quickly become my virtual walkman and a working tool (I'm a semi-professional musician).
THE BAD:
I'm so used to it that I don't mind most of the major flaws:
it weighs a ton / very slow to awaken when disk has stopped spinning (energy saving) / MP3 only / poor quality control knobs / USB 1 (yeah, imagine the transfering time...).
THE GOOD:
It could be used as a portable hard disk (you could put anything on it) at a time when that was still an exception.
The excellent ROCKBOX software (now 2.0), developped for free by geeks on the net for this specific model, adds incredible features (especially on control of sound quality and recording options) to the relatively poor native software.
Has a built-in mic, as well as a line in!
I'm pretty sure I would be happy with an iPod... though I've seen it's not quite as flexible on a number of points as my Archos.
And, well, the PRICE of the Archos was(is?) just nothing to compare with Apple.
byt the way where did you get that software? I have an
archos gmni 220 and am looking for stuff like that. Prices still cheaper.
Hi
Not just anybody can help me. Must own a ARCHOS Jukebox Recorder 15. I would realy appreciate haveing the (in put and out put) reading on the wall transformer.
Thank you very much.
I use a Sony Psyc CD/MP3/ATRAC portable. I can plug it into my home Stereo - or- use the Cassette adapter in my car since I have to drive a lot for my job. A CD-R or RW will hold about 10 hours each. Of course these will also play on my computer which is wired from the line out of the sound card to a A/V surround sound receiver, HiFi speakers and home theater Sub woofer. This blows away any computer speaker system I have ever heard at about the same price or less than the high end THX computer systems. Of course you could just as well plug an I-Pod into this type of setup.
So, I put hard drive-based player, namely the Nomad Jukebox 3, because I do own one, and use it somewhat frequently. But more often than not, if I'm listening to music, it's on my laptop - a fujitsu C series - mostly because my 20 gig drive on the mp3 player is now full.
I really should look into buying a player with a larger drive.
i use my iPod as my mp3 player
I have the 20 gig Zen Touch and wish I had the 40 Gig unit. The I-pod was a considered choice and, for accessories, the I-pod is what vendors are supporting. However, the proprietary software, non-support for other formats, and, originally, only for Apple, were considered negatives. Also, a premium cost for the i-pod and it's accessories, like all other apple products, was a factor. After saying that, these mp3 players ARE REPLACING the racks of cds in cars and a superior solution to transporting AND storage of your music provided 1. You already have or are building a large music database, 2. A lot of patience to convert music to MP3/WMA/ETC, 3. A lot of patience to catalog and load the music into the MP3 player, 4. A pc with a large hard drive and plenty of speed, 5. A better mp3 burner/catalog software than Windows Media Player. Like anything else, you have to make an effort to get the results that make a difference. In the end, you face this same regimen whether an ipod or creative player and the extra cost for the ipod just isn't worth it.
I use my MP3 player on a daily basis. I currently use a Sony CD/MP3 player which might not be as small and compact as current MP3 players, but it functions well. With its ATRAC technology I can burn 495 songs on 1 780mb CD. However, I tend to use the basic MP3 technology which allows me to burn 150-170 songs per CD. I don't particularly want to carry my entire music collection with me. But when prices drop and MP3 technology becomes commonplace, I'll purchase one.
I use the s710a.
my trusty iPod...its awesome! Cant imagine what life was like before it.
I'm from the old school, I enjoy albums more than singles and so I buy albums not just a few songs.
I remeber when musician really were artists and their intent was to assemble a collection of songs that not only had a related theme but that also had an order to them and complemented each other and it benefitted the listener to hear them all in their entirety and in sequence to get the full effect or the artists effort.
