Walkman is yesterday's news... iPod is todays.

by pruss - 7/12/05 3:59 PM In reply to: Hard drive-based player (which one?) by Tombo55

I have the 60GB iPod Photo (now just a standard iPod). at the default 128kbps (CD Quality) AAC format , it can hold 1000 hours of music. With my colletin which is a mix of AAC I bought in the iTMS and hundreds of hours of MP3s those ripped from CDs at 160kbps, I have my entire collection of over 600 hours of music on one device (with hundreds of hours of room to spare still!).

I can easily sort through my whole collection by genre, artist, etc., etc. entirely at will and never, ever have to swap out any silly discs.

Yes all of what you said is true to a large extent. However HDD mp3 players isn't the super majical technology you think it is. When you think about it. your PC does the samething and much much more. (with the extra bulk of course).
The one thing i find very annoying is people's crtisizm about CDs when comparing it to HDD mp3 players. There is a reason why your 60gb ipod holds 1000hours of music whilst a CD holds about 80mins. a linear lossless PCM file sound around 10times better then an AAC160kps. Let's say that you wanted to load your ipod with the same quailty audio. that'll take is capacity down by about 5-6times. which then is only about 10times more then a CD. However if you have not realised that the Apple lossless format is much more inferior compared to the other lossless formats out there such as FLAC

Loseless

by cdanblack - 7/13/05 10:14 AM In reply to: Still overated by sh1mpulse

I don't understand what this talk is about lossy and lossless. The minute that music left a microphone and entered a recording device it was LOSSY. The only trully lossless format is live music, not amplified.

But lets be serious. I'm an audiophile...well at least I hope I am with the cost I dump into music / audio equipment. I can tell the difference between an mp3 and an AAC file...but that's only sometimes. It gets to a point that a human ear cannot detect the difference in a CD from a digital file.

The real TRUE difference is not in the source, but in the means of listening. I'll take any mp3 on my stereo and stack it against your stock ipod earphones with the best "lossless" file...then we'll see what's better.

The quality is only as good as the weekest link in your listening experience.

Missing the point

by sh1mpulse - 7/14/05 11:10 PM In reply to: Loseless by cdanblack

We're comparing sound quailty in terms of a level playing field. There's so no point nitpicking on the fact that all digital audio is lossy the second it entered a recording device. Lossless just means compresion without "purposely" removing properties of a track. You can't start comparing lossless and lossy by saying the lossy wins because you put it on a abetter amp. Comparing things on different controls is just a waste of time.

Sony MD sucks!

by sploar - 7/12/05 4:56 PM In reply to: Hard drive-based player (which one?) by Tombo55

I couldn't even download mp3 Bible studies off the internet and put it on the MD I had! I think Sony should get out of the music business and into international piracy detectives! I couldn't believe how restrictive they are as to what content you can put on their stupid players. That stupidity is going to be the end of them as far as the portable music player business is concerned!

Shellow opinon

by sh1mpulse - 7/12/05 6:34 PM In reply to: Sony MD sucks! by sploar

MiniDisc players/Recorders in general these days are not built souly for the purpose of playing back music. Sony MiniDiscs are sold mainly by their live recording abilities. People complain about it's size compared to mp3s and the fact that you have to carry countless disks. This is just looking at one side of the picture.
If you bought an MD just to play back music and audio files then you made a mistake in choosing an MD player as this wasn't your best choice. You are blaming your lack of research and knowlege on the product.
Sony was a pioneer in digital audio and they still lead the way in terms of sound quailty on their digital audio players because of features such as MegaBass and built in HD-digital amps.
Although the compulsary need for the use of SonicStage, which is a poor audio management program by today's standards sony is still turning out quailty no-fuss players which has sound quailty matched by few

Sony Md - HI is the one to buy

by latenimage - 7/13/05 7:32 AM In reply to: Sony MD sucks! by sploar

If you want an MP3 Player or music to take along with you then this is your Player. First of all they start at around 100 bucks not to bad. Come with one a gig disk and you can expand at will for at most 7 dollars per gig. Beat that and you can keep adding gig as you need. It comes with the power supply unlike the I-Pod. And all the software is include could use a USB 2.0 but not as big a deal as you would think. And if you bread the player you don’t have to start from scratch your disks will work in you r new player. Can also down load file and picture the player and up load them to a different computer with the USB plug. For the money it’s the best of both worlds in music file management and Picture software.

yes and no

I have a 2nd generation sony rh910 hi-md. In my opinion it wasn't built to race againest HDD mp3 players, rather it's an improvement to regular MDs. When you weigh the advantages and disadvantages of Hi-Mds you'll still come to the conclusion that it's still a recording device more then a allround high storage media player. The sony Hi-Md do their job very well. It's unfair to blame an correct purchase for your needs on the product. e.g If you're sandwich maker doesn't make pie doesn't mean it's a bad sandwich maker. It just doesn't make pies the way you like it

I couldn't agree more, Sony sucks!

by maxmuscle - 7/14/05 7:43 PM In reply to: Sony MD sucks! by sploar

Dude you're totally hitting the nail on the head! I just sold my Sony MZ-NH1 because of Sony's stupid BS, Nazi, exclusive format.
Nothing burns me more than these ******* companies trying to force consumers into their own archaic stupid exclusive formats and I hope it damns them serverely!
I for one will never buy anothe Sony product as long as I live!!

Too extreme

by sh1mpulse - 7/14/05 11:38 PM In reply to: I couldn't agree more, Sony sucks! by maxmuscle

I can understand why you're not a fan of atrac, however you should understand that sony was a pioneer in MDs and because it was built more for recording purchases then playback. that's how the atrac format came about. The atrac format itself is quite good compared to lossy formats such as mp3 and AAC, but it is only on their MDs that accept atrac only. their MD/Hi-MD products on the whole are good quailty.
The 2nd generation Hi-Md now support mp3. atrac dates back a long way, it's not like a new scam that they introduced to annoy you

SONY MD THE LITTLE FORMAT THAT COULD'NT

by gwats1957 - 7/19/05 2:00 AM In reply to: Sony MD sucks! by sploar

I feel your pain. I invested in sony MD with two home recorders and 2 MD decks for my 4WD trucks+ 1 portable. The format never caught on so I'm using my two iPods and the cd burners on my CPUs. Sony had a winner in this format but they did not develop and promote it. Just another freaking Betamax for audio like 8-track tapes!
