Try first one - no harm will be done, then

by AussiePete - 5/28/05 8:12 PM In reply to: One more to go. by Hocky27

Try this
Error 1606
Err Msg: Error 1606 Could Not Access Network Location

Go to: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

Ensure that all the Common Administrative Tools entries are correct. All should have All users in there list except admin tools and personal which should have your folder name - they should NOT be listed as ''default'' either
eg
common admin tools ->
C:\Documents and Settings\(your account name)\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

If the above is correct double click on admin tools and change it to ''all users'' in the list
ie
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
then exit and reboot

DO a RESTORE POINT FIRST

Let us know how you go.

Error 1606. could not access network location \Startup

by erm909 - 6/29/05 8:46 AM In reply to: Try first one - no harm will be done, then by AussiePete

I have been trying to install Acrobat (Versions 5, 6, and 7.0 pro) for the past 2 days now. I get the

error 1606.could not access network location\Startup

mid install.

I have read posts that have suggested deleting, editing, and making changes to my registry and nothing seems to work.

I have also tried the Microsoft windows clean up program.

Can Anyone Help?

" Error 1606 " in Photoshop - My Solution

by Novoton - 6/19/05 8:43 AM In reply to: " Error 1606 " in Photoshop by Hocky27

I have the same problem with Acrobat (after installing Norton Internet security nothing worked.

For CS2 I was afraid the same thing.

I created a directory C:\startup at root of hard-disk. Installer copied a file (gamma) and all went okay. Hope this helps you. Let me know the result.

This one worked for me installing Acrobat with Error 1606

by cnetbugsmenot - 7/12/05 12:10 PM In reply to: " Error 1606 " in Photoshop - My Solution by Novoton

Firs af all, I'm using a bugmenot account.
On the previous post, they suggested to create a C:/Startup folder, which I tried to do. The problem was that an empty Startup folder existed already, so I thought "What if I delete the 'startup' folder?"
So I deleted the C:/Startup folder and the installation was succesfully.

Still getting 1606 errors attempting to install Acrobat.

Thanks for the tips about adding and deleting Startup folders but that didn’t work either. I even created Startup folders in every user profile folder just to see if it was looking in a base user folder. That didn’t work. Not like I thought it would. I also tried a search in the Registry editor for Startup and looked for any incorrect Value data everywhere but I can’t seem to find any. I am thinking about just uninstalling and cleaning out everything Adobe and starting over. I don’t know if that would even fix the issue.

For future reference...

This problem caused me quite a headache and few lost hours of work, but I finally managed to figure it out.

It seems to happen only if you've had multiple versions of Office installed on the machine. In my case, the machine had Office XP which was later upgraded to Office 2003. When you install an Adobe product, it tries to install macros in the Excel XLSTART and Word STARTUP folders and checks the registry for the correct path to put in front of that.

It opens
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\InstallRoot]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\InstallRoot]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\InstallRoot]
etc. and looks at the 'Path' key for that. But if it doesn't exist, instead of skipping that version of Office, it returns a blank string resulting in the installation being unable to find the \Startup folder and aborting.

To work around that, I created a new 'String Value' called 'Path' and put the same path in every one, no matter the version. In my case, this was 'E:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE10\'. The folder STARTUP already existed in 'E:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE10\' so after updating the registry, I ran the installation again and it griped about \XLSTART.

So I went back to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Excel\InstallRoot]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\InstallRoot]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\InstallRoot]
and added a 'String Value' called 'Path' just like I did for Word.

After this final registry update, the installation ran through without a hitch!

Hope it helps someone!

SAme 1606 \xlstart problem

by Neenersan - 8/13/07 4:26 PM In reply to: For future reference... by SwissJay

I can get into the registry, not a problem (unfortunately) but I don't know how to add a string value. Could you please type out the whole registry line and then tell me where to put it? (be nice)

Thank you. Oh, will this fix work in Vista? I hate Vista. Actually I haven't much cared for any Windows version since oh, lets see.....never.

1606 registry

by SwissJay - 9/2/07 9:59 PM In reply to: SAme 1606 \xlstart problem by Neenersan

I'm a little late, but here's the registry file to import. Of course, make sure the path actually matches what you have on your harddrive!

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\InstallRoot]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE10\\"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\InstallRoot]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE10\\"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\InstallRoot]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE10\\"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Excel\InstallRoot]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE10\\"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\InstallRoot]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE10\\"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\InstallRoot]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE10\\"

Good luck!

Your suggestion worked!

by jarjar467-news - 9/3/07 7:26 AM In reply to: 1606 registry by SwissJay

I have been trying to fix a factory install version of Acrobat for more than a year...whenever I was prompted to accept an update. I tried all of the other advice but could never find a problem with paths like

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

It turns out that my registry had 3 Excel entries, but only one had a path string.
