New Apple/PC!!

by Mustang67 - 7/8/05 1:51 AM

I know at first this may sound like the usual "im a college kid, what should i get apple or PC?" post, but its not.

Im getting a new laptop and thats for sure, im looking to spend around 2.5k (if needed) and want the best. Ive always been interested in MACs, so i looking into the 'new' powerbooks.
After Customizing i got this: 15.2" 1.67Ghz Powerbook,1G DDR333 SDRAM, 100gb @ 5400rpm Hard drive, 8x SUperdrive DVD +/-RW/CD-RW, 128 VRAM. All this equals 2,414 Dollars.
After this announcement of the new line of intel chips for Apple, I feel that im buying a outdated 2 year old laptop with minor updates. I need a powerful/mobile laptop right now though and cant wait.

I started looking at PCs, but everything seems too big, like the HP zd8000.

What im basically looking for is a powerbook just updated, same mobility, etc.

Is it still worth it to get a new powerbook today?

You should look at the HP dv4170. It has similar specs as the powerbook and the screen is extremely nice. I had my heart set on the powerbook for college but decided to wait 4 years, when finally the G5 will be better researched. The 2,500 is not worth it for the powerbook. Also the dv4170 is pretty looking and has great speakers :)

Hope that helps.

Still a valid question

I'm in a similar boat - I need a laptop. I use a PC at work, and a Mac at home and for video/web-design work.

The new powerbooks are still great machines - they're fast, they're reliable, and honestly they'll last you through the next 3 years. (that's about my life-cycle with computers anyway). So - if you consider that 1.5 of those years will be spent working out the kinks with the intel-based macs, you're good to go.

I would suggest though, looking at the "save" section on the apple site - it offers apple refurbed items - and you can get a 15" for well uner 2k.

As far as PC's - I've been looking at Portable One's MX a lot lately - they just came out with a new version - yesterday. Pretty great specs, and the price is right for you to max out. 2.5k should get you a 2.2g sonoma, 1 gig ram, dvd-burner, 60g 7200 rpm hd, bt, etc. http://www.portableone.com

Good luck deciding!

About "kinks."

The backrooms at Apple have been kicking OSX on Intel for many years. Look to Jobs and what the NextOS ran on when he moved back to Apple and ... it's a grand circle trip.

New Apple/PC!!

What are you going to use it for??? Video editing or just general school stuff? Today's Power Books are very fast, Unix is faster than XP. Read some of the reviews of the Mac mini, which is just a repackaged i book without a display and keyboard and people are surprised at how fast they are. John

In that case you need the Apple since you can then get Finial Cut Express and do great editing. I'm sure it will last 3~4 years. John
