I'm running Windows XP Pro and am using Outlook Express. Since installing Norton Internet Security a few weeks ago, I keep getting a window popping up on the screen a few minutes after start up. It says "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client." I do not wish to do this as Outlook Express is my default mail whatever. My ISP and Norton can't help me to stop this window popping up. I click the OK box or the X top right and the window disappears only to reappear the next time I start up. Any suggestions?
Check your Norton Antivirus Options and try disableing the Office Plugin and see if that stops the box popping up.
Let me know if it works or not.
I disabled the Office Plugin as you suggested, rebooted the computer, and there it was, after a couple of minutes, back again!
Any other suggestions?
Norton's Internet Security may have screwed up your settings. Check whether you still have Outlook Express as your default client:
*At Internet Explorer(if youn use IE), Tools>Options>Programs.- e-mail.
*At Outlook Express: Tools>Options,at the bottom.
* At Norton, is there a place where you can choose whcih e-mail to scan ? Is Outlook Express chosen ?
Yes to all 3 of your points. Outlook Express is definitely the default email.
You mentioned that the pop up appears a few minutes after you start your computer - what is being done on the computer during these few minutes ? What are on the list at the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) before and when the pop-up message appears ?
Often nothing: I might switch on the PC, go out of the room while it boots up, then when I return the pop-up is there. But I will remember to check with the Task Manager as you advised and be more aware of exactly what I am doing at that time. I will get back to you tomorrow after I boot up.
This is what happened today. I started the computer and nothing happened - no tasks were in Task Mgr. After 3 minutes I opened IE 6 and after 2 minutes, up popped that window again. In Task Manager, I had Internet Explorer PLUS MIcrosoft Outlook running. I highlighted M'soft Outlook and clicked End Task. The window disappeared. After a few minutes, I re-started the computer and went through the same process. After 5 minutes, the window popped up again!
This time I R-clicked on M'soft Outlook and selected "Go To Process" where CCAPP.EXE was highlighted. I again clicked End Task. Should I have clicked End Process?? Do you think that would fix it? (I don't like clicking things that I don't understand!)
Hi esmefab,
If I understand correctly, Once you Open IE..in the next min you see Outlook running...
Simple Fix...Lets Disable access to Outlook
Start-Control Panel-(Add or Remove Programs)-
On the Left Hand Side..Click on Set Program Access and Defaults-
Under Choose a Configuration-
Select Custom..and click on the drop down menu(On the Right Hand Side)...
Under choose a Default Email Program:
Select Outlook Express-and Check Enable access
Uncheck Outlook(It shd be already)-Uncheck Enable access...Click on OK
Regard,
S.Ahmed
I did as you suggested, actually selecting Outlook Express instead of "use my current email program" (which IS Outlook Express) but as soon as I clicked on Outlook Express the button to click to "enable access" became greyed out. However, I clicked OK and restarted the PC and after about 3 minutes, the window pop-up appeared again ![]()
....is to see what is running when the pop up appears, i.e. using Task Manager, see what is running (Applications or Processes)BEFORE and AFTER the pop up appears - any extra apps or processes running after the pop-up ? Get the names, put them in Google, and the information may provide clues for a solution.
The only thing running is Task Manager and then, after a few minutes, Microsoft Outlook. The process running is CCAPP.EXE which I put into Google, as you suggested, and found out - "is a process belonging to Norton. It is responsible for the auto-protect and email checking facilities, both of which will not function correctly if this service is stopped."
It looks like somethng invokes Outlook to run at startup, and your selection of Outlook Express is being ''ignored'' or "bypassed". At Internet Options, Programs tab, select Outlook for e-mail and news group. OK out. Shut down. Reboot. Now, go back to Internet Options, programs tab, and select Outlook Express for e-mail an news group. OK out. Shut down. Reboot. Try also to reinstall Norton.... Running a registry cleaner may also help. Some are free.
I did what you said at Internet Options and thought I had it fooled for 5 minutes but then it returned! Monday morning I will phone Norton again, then, if necessary, re-install Norton. Thanks for your help - I will let you know how this problem pans out.
I phoned Norton and they suggested I contact Microsoft re removing Microsoft Outlook. (Norton is checking both email server programs for spam). However, I located the exe file in my PC (Prog Files\M'soft Office\Office\)& deleted it, rebooted and for 5 minutes thought I had it licked - until the window popped up again ![]()
