Satellite is TAX FREE

by qwerty5912 - 6/28/05 9:32 PM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Satellite is amazing because your bill is low and is tax free in most states NC is not one of them. But My family had cablevision here in ny and they did us wrong. Cable is not 100% digital as they make you believe. the picture is okay but satellite is 100% digital and you can see the difference. Direct tv is great would suggest it for everyone who hates there cable companies such as cablevision. The same company who tried to stop the 2012 Olympics.

Cable -v- Satelite

by jbel - 6/28/05 10:09 PM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

For internet users cable is the better choice.
Satelite simply does not offer the speeds of cable.
I would have gone with satelite if it weren't for the internet package being so slow and so expensive.
The internet package I got with cable was faster and cheaper.

I guess it depends on where your needs are and your budget allows. If I could afford it I would have both. Satelite's programing if far better. The picture quality is better in my opinion. I just can't see the need of having both just because I prefer faster internet.

DSL is expensive and has uncertain speeds depending upon your distance from a "node" and how many other subscribers are closer to the "node" than you. Many people can't have DSL because of analog filters and signal amplifiers which do not permit digital signals to pass through. Also, a requirement for DSL is a software installation (drivers, etc.) which adds to processes and uses system resources.

I also use the internet for my business. I can classify it as an expense. However, if I had both services I would only be able to do it for the internet portion. I have a minimal package for cable which is required to get the best deal.

Which is better, digital cable or satellite?

by philcosta - 6/28/05 10:49 PM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I prefer cable because the service I use has highspeed internet, telephone and TV. The download speed is almost one MBPS. Upload speed is held down some, so people won't run servers from their homes.
The telephone is digital and the tv is digital with HDTV available. There is a TIVO service available and PPV movies are ordered from the remote.

digital cable

by jagwoods51 - 6/28/05 11:02 PM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Digital cable is far better than satellite. We subscribed to satellite for years, and became very frustrated when the signal went out during rainstorms, snowstorms and the like. We happily subscribe to digital cable now....no more weather problems!

Satellite or Cable - it's easy if you have no choice!

by steve7r - 6/29/05 12:42 AM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I live in a remote rural part of North Scotland, this makes it very simple..no cable..no terrestrial..just satellite.

I'm sure this must be the case for a lot of us that live in remote areas.

On the brighter side...we have been promised broadband (plain vanilla ASDL) before the end of the year.

Having said all that TV does rot your brain, but I wouldn't have missed the new Dr Who for anything!!

cable is better at this time

by lpk - 6/29/05 4:34 AM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Cable service is better at this time because!
1. You don't have to watch the same thing you are recording, and record a different channel in every room in your house.
2. I have my 52" tv, my Go=Video dual deck VCR, and both or my DVD+RW recorders hooked to my cable recording all different channels while I watch what I like on the TV. With no interference from either of them.
I don't have to run through the cable box unless I want to see HI Def show, That I don't see is worth giving up being able to use all of my equipment at the same time.
3. All of my units can change to any channel so I don't have to go to the cable box and change the channel to record a different program for different times.
Until they get the satellite to broadcast all the signal for all the stations so my equipment can change it's own channels, I will stick with Cable.

cable installed all rooms

by lpk - 6/29/05 5:47 AM In reply to: cable is better at this time by lpk

The cable company installed the cable outlet in every room in my house and went ender the house and up through the floor, so who needs wireless that can only receive through their receiver and can only watch what you record.
I also found the cable to be cheaper that satellite for me.

satellite is better because you aren't supporting cable

by tpegan - 6/29/05 4:47 AM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have experience with Dish, DirecTV, and several cable companies. So far the quality of customer service that I have received from satellite is far superior to cable. This point of view is supported by many credible surveys.

Cable rates have risen faster than satellite. That's just a fact.

Cable ads that attack satellite are exagerated and misleading. I know that is the nature of advertising but I think that the cable companies have stretched the envelope a little on this one.

Finally, I strongly believe that the FCC ruling that blocked the Dish/DirecTV merger was not in the public's best interest but instead served the cable industry. The cable industry has a major lobbying presence in Washington and our legislators seem to act accordingly.

People may disagree when it comes to whether or not satellite is technically superior but I believe the correct thing for the public to do is express their disdain for cable practices with their wallets.

I vote for cable

by Argie-Salvador - 6/29/05 5:20 AM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I voted for cable because - at least in Argentina - it is the option less prone to suffer interruptions. Two cable companies dispute the market to one satellite. The cable companies sell their product together with cable TV, on the same wires with different wave length at a reduced price if you sign for both. The satellite company also giving TV connections, so far cannot cope with interruptions produced when rainfalls, either because water wetting the dishes interfere with signal or electricity in the atmosphere does. Whatever the cause (could be neither of these)their service - dearer than the cable's - has this problem still unsolved.
Perhaps in a near future both systems will be on a par or satellite will be better. Meanwhile I vote for comfort. Salvador Oria, Buenos Aires.

Satelllite is much better

by fast_dude007 - 6/29/05 5:47 AM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Since I'm a satellite customer for over 6 years now I must say the selection of programming is much better than cable. The option of choosing the channel lineup is much better than cable. I do not have the home shopping channel or any other stupid useless channels; I can control what I'm watching and what I'm paying for. Time shifting is another great feature. Quality of picture and sound is outstanding with no pictures noise. Signal lose is about twice a year due to snow storms.

Wired (network) cabling?

by skobola - 6/29/05 6:35 AM In reply to: Which is better, digital cable or satellite? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I really do not understand why the author (the one with an old house) did not connect all the rooms with wireless networking, i.e., wireless routers and wireless network cards in computers...
But to keep this message in the context of the asked question, I have a cable Internet connection provided by Comcast, and it works exceptionally fast (at about 250 KB/sec), but as I have never experienced the satellite, then I really cannot say which one of the two would be better. However, if the comparison would be between the cable and DSL, then the edge would go to the cable connection.
