Failed phishing attempt

During the last few weeks I have been bombarded with e-mail messages supposedly coming from my ISP in sets of three per day. They purported to be about problems with my account, security violations, or threats to cancel the account. They all have the same domain (that of my ISP), however the sender sometimes is support, or administrator, etc. about six in total.

The messages require one to answer a questionnaire that comes as a zipped attachment, where sometimes Norton Antivirus detects a virus and at other times does not.

What made me initially suspicious was the fact that living in Colombia, messages from my ISP always come in Spanish, and that all these phishing e-mails were written in English. A phone call to the ISP confirmed that the messages were not from them.

of this junk have been online since '95.
And know html code. Take nothing for granted.

I always set eml to view full headers AND
read "properties" of suspect emails to
determine what actual URL is for the
named (viewed) link URL.

Phishing Scam

That,is why i had a hard time trying,to login,that phishing scam,i had to change it all!!! Then 3 days later,i got hit again!! I have learned a one very important thing for our members to do to look out for this stuff,from a fraud investagater,from my bank told me.#1.alway,s look at what is in front of you on that screen,if it look,s (Fishy)it is!The page you are viewing,#2.Never,give no info: to no web-site untill,you have read all of there legal stuff (return-policy,s ETC:) it is always at the bottom of the page,sure it make take time,by downing this but if not it could cost you like it cost me? #3.Look,for someway to contact them and DO-IT,just to be sure!! If they are ok and get mad,well so be it---at least you no that you did the right thing??? Last #4.It,is gonna,get worse in the next few years so everyone get ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You For Your Time.

Phishing

I learned my lesson when I picked up a virus after responding to an Email SUPPOSEDLY from Microsoft to get virus protection from the offending virus.

Since then, I don't respond to ANYTHING that requests info online, no matter how dire the plea or official looking they appear. And I get them all the time.

I received email from INTERNET BANKING INC. that wanted my account# because of a problem with ileagel entry.
I DID NOT GIVE IT OUT I'M NOT A DUMMY.

Phishing protection

I use an extension for Firefox called "spoofstick". This allows you to easily see what the address is of the website you are on. I also have one specific address for financial related matters and if I receive something in my day to day mailbox it will be phishing only and deleted.

Emails, emails, emails

I got several phishing emails one weekend and that was it. All you have to do is ignore them, but if you can't tell if they're real or not a good rule of thumb is to see if they address you by your full name or not. If not they are probably fake. Also compare their makeup to another email that isn't fake from the same company.

Have more than one email address? If you provided a company with one email but the phishing email came to a different inbox then you know it's fake. And last but not least read some articles on the web about how to protect yourself, it's not hard and really does help!

No I do not open anything that I do not reconize. I get stuff from people I don't even know,and I delete it as fast as possible...

I always presume that ALL unsolicited offers via email are phishing scams. I make no exception to this rule, EVER!

The easiest way to tell if an e-mail is an invitation to hand someone all your money: they don't address YOU. If the only relevant info that connects the e-mail to you is the e-mail address, don't answer - or better yet, go to the original web site and contact customer service. Inform them of the e-mail and they will tell you how to handle it. E-bay and other sites will address you by name when sending an e-mail, all others want you to give it to them.

Never been stung this way. Guess I'm not too gullible. I never use links provided in unsolicited e-mail. If I suspect the message is legitimate I go directly to company's website, using my "Favorites" list. These sites never require I type in sensitive information; its already there, and any mail they have sent me is readily available.

If you have not requested any e-mail from some one.
Delete it. I get phishing/Junk/Spam/and spit mail all the time, But if I did not initiate the e-mail , I feel that it's garbage and it has spy shtuff. It's kinda like the advertizements you get in your regular snail mail, I don't bother with reading all that shtuff,So it gets trashed. Same princible here ( don't want it trash it ).

I got a mail from accounts@steampowered.com .
I suspected it was a phising, but i copied the whole part after the @, pasted it in notepad. Notepad shows up zeroes as filled and with an white S in it. I suspected that steamp O wered was a zero. But not. It was not a zero. It was a letter "o". I tested to enter a zero in notepad and it showed up filled. So the next test was to copy the part after @ and paste it in browser. I got to steampowered's real site. So i tought that mail was legitimate so i replyed with username and password to steam-verification@mail.com

Result: My account got disabled for piracy.


note to steampowered personell: PLEASE KEEP YOUR SMTP PASSWORDS SAFE SO NOT PHISERS CAN SEND MAILS WITH YOUR DOMAIN AS SENDER!!!!

steampowered SMTP passwords

One can (more or less) easily put anything they want into the "from" line of their e-mail, without having to hack anything. I could send e-mails "from" microsoft if I wanted to, or some non existent server...

Notice how you replied to an address @mail.com (a free e-mail service) not to anything @steampowered.com
