Best notebook/desktop for picture/video editing and general

by jram496895 - 6/6/05 5:46 PM

I have been searching for the best system to download my pictures, create albums, edit video, and general use. I need something that will be "up-to-date" for at least 3 or 4 years that can be as flexible as possible. Any suggestions for the system, printers, software, and accessories? It's for primarily two empty-nesters with a Palm, Garmin GPS, Blackberry, and a digital video camcorder and digital camera.

Any suggestions regarding manufacturers - Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway, etc. would be great. And notebook/desktop - I was thinking maybe a notebook with a docking station would give me the greatest flexibility?

Also if there are any specials - please direct me!!!!

Thanks!

Toshiba Qosmio G25-513 - it is big and expensive, but it's really fast. I am a video editor so believe me when I say it's an able system.

Ofcourse, it's more than that - it's also an entertainment system with a DVD (burner), TV tuner, S-Video in/out, Firewire and much, much more.

Mine came with 2 GHz Centrino CPU, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 6600 and 2x80 GB hard drives RAID.

Such performer demands power... much power, so don't expect long autonomy time - I barely manage to sqeeze few hours (two at most) from it, but then again, I need absolutely no autonomy.

If you're a sucker for large, crystal clear screens (as much as I am) you'll want to buy this particular notebook the moment you see it - it's captivating.

Avoid till 2006.

Toshiba is still fixing a boatload of laptops with static discharge and lockup issues. Let Toshiba work on this issue this year and wait for the bad units to get worked out of the system.

There are many other fine laptops out there to choose from.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&biw=1024&q=toshiba+grill+lockup finds the numerous posts about this. It's a lesson that some companies get to relearn about ESD protection. Sadly, this issue, when they forget is usually across the entire product line. Let them revise/refresh the lineup without your involvement.

What about the newest Toshiba laptops

Bob,

Would this (ESD), in your opinion, also apply to the newest Toshibas, such as M60 (love the design)? :-)
From what I have read, the ESD was very pronounced on their A75 line, but I have not heard anything bad about the Qosmio?

Why bother?

Why bother?

It takes months for companies to revamp their products.

Let me share that I have an engineering background and I know the issue all too well. One job I moved away from had the engineering manager getting lax on ESD design. This attitude about ESD crept into every product during their rather short career. The fallout went on for years as it was all sorted out.

-> Avoid the make till 2006.

But hey, it's your choice. I only write from experience.

You want bad news about the Qosmio? How about heat issues? I'd rather not pan the unit entirely, but it is a problem.

Well...

As I already own Toshiba Qosmio G25 I can only express my opinion on it. So far, it's extremely positive.

I've had absolutely no problems with the unit and if you ask me, there is no heat problem. But then again, I'm no engeneer.

I'm using my unit as an easily portable workstation - so it's continually on the move from one desk and power outlet to another.

Proffitt, could you give me any warnings regarding G25 specifically if you had any previous experience with the unit? I must state that I've had less problems with the unit in this short time I own it then a friend of mine who bought that new Dell machine (at about the same time)- he is living in his own personal hell right now, and it's no fun watching it :(

Same here.

I'm not a Toshiba fan boybyany means, but it works for me I'l take it.

My G15 is one of the coolest running notebooks I've ever owned and I've owned many!

I had the scorching hot Best Buy VPR Matrix and very HOT and LOUD HP ZD7000 and trust me- you better have something between these notebooks and your lap!

But the Qosmio- why I've had nothing but pure satisfaction with this unit.

It runs quiet and much cooler than the others.

This is also what I read in reviews before I checked it and made my purchase.

So according to my findings Mike, if you and I were lucky and received good units as in low heat output (just one of the many other positive qualities I've experienced with this unit then we were not the only ones as I've found many who've stated howcool these units run.

Oh, and battery life is not an issue for me either as there is ac where ever I go!

And as far as size, I was in my local coffe shop this weekend and observed 3 other 17 inch screen users (an Apple, a Dell and I couldn't tell what the other was) so I removed my "employee" from it's bag and got too work (and a little fun) as well.

Felt right at home and... I mean that literally!

Check the Turion Notebooks

by ihs97 - 9/27/05 9:27 AM In reply to: desktop for picture/video editing by jcrobso

Here is an article that benchmarks the new Turion 64 processors vs. the Intel Sonoma processors:
http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources/articles/42/10/1/

It seems, for video and picture editing, that the Turion is a slightly better choice. Also, these processors are already 64bit and thus will be able to take advantage of the new 64bit OS's that will be offered soon.

Please, don't listen to the Mac-only guys about this. You will spend more money for a product that is highly inferior (especially the hardware) in speed, ram, harddrive capacity and screen resolution.

If you need to purchase soon, I'd take a look at the Acer Ferrari (although there are others comparable to it as well) because it has a great processor, AND an amazing screen (1680 screen resolution is perfect for video editing).
