I've been researching mp3 players for way too long. I'm a swimmer so I thought Oregon Scientific MP120 waterproof player would be best for me but I've heard some bad things about it and I really don't think I'll be using it in the water much. I was just researching more and found iAUDIO U2 256MB Ruby Red MP3 Player with FM Radio,Beatsounds 256MB MP3 Player with FM Radio - EVR 500, Samsung 256MB MP3 Player with 4-Line LCD and FM Tuner - YP MT6V,iAUDIO G3 256MB Pearl White MP3 Player with FM Radio, and iAUDIO I5 256MB Ruby Red MP3 Player - I5-256RD. If anyone knows if these are anygood or has any other ideas on whats best please tell me.
I'm also looking for a player with fm radio, but no one seems to review them anywhere. Does anyone knows about reviews for this category of players? Thanks.
There is an article on just that...flash players with good FM. NOt sure if it is on cnet or somewhere else.
anyway, the newest Cowon I-Audio players and Creative Muvo N200 and Micro were among them.
It's available in 512 MB or 1 GB and has an excellent FM tuner (well, it's better than the Creative Zen Micro (which had terrible reception) and better than a little Sony AM/FM receiver (which had pretty good reception)). Also, it's expandable -- it can take a 2 GB SD card. No software or drivers are required -- the computer thinks it's an external drive.
Two issues I've found:
1. It's not track number aware, so if you want to play an album, it will play the songs in alphabetical order. The workaround is to add the track number to the ID3 track name, but that makes the overall song list pretty useless.
2. It doesn't remember your radio station. Everytime you go to the radio, it goes to 87.5 MHz (static radio, all static, all the time). You can then go to one of your presets. Stupid oversight and annoying.
Otherwise, the sound is good, it's super light, the display is clear. I think Newegg has the 1 GB for $139, which is a little above your range, but the 512 MB is well within it.
I own the Samsung YP-MT6X (512mb version) and i really love it. it has fm tuner and recorder, ogg support (big plus), four lines white lcd display (very readable), 42 hours battery life with one aa battery and tons of great featuers. highly recommended
I have the Samsung MT6Z (1GB), but the MT6Y (512MB) is about $120. I'm pleased with the quality of the FM tuner on the MT6. One thing I like is the ease with which it can scan and automatically set twenty preset stations; just press and hold the A-B button, and twenty seconds later, you have up to twenty pretty strong stations to choose from.
The FM recording is quick and easy to engage. The recording quality is adequate in FM, the Line In recording less so. If your reason to buy the MT6 is Line In recording, there are probably better choices.
The case is compact, not much larger than that the AA battery that powers it, but the thickness makes it hard to figure out the best way to carry it. (As a 54 year old pre-geezer, I'm not into the included lanyard, but the MT6 doesn't fit comforatably in a shirt pocket.) The display is nicely backlit, but is also easy to read without the backlight. The USB 2.0 transfers files quickly, and the fact it is seen as a USB mass storage device makes getting files in and out of it a breeze.
Oh yeah, MP3's sound good on the Samsung MT6 too.
Is the device capable of timed, unattended FM recording? thanks, syd
The Samsung MT6 with 1.200 firmware is capable turning itself off automatically with the auto sleep timer (10 to 120 minute range) but can't turn itself on to record a program. Also, I found that low bit rate recordings have an annoying birdie, chirpy quality, requiring higher bit rates to overcome even for talk shows.
That was excellent insight you provided. I am particularly looking to record a talk radio program, timed, while I am at work, that I can later burn to CDs in MP3 format to listen to in my car. I am not committed to an MP3 player (it could be a dedicated "radio TIVO"-like device, but it does have to yield some decent quality and allow for timed recording.
So far, nothing I have run across in reviews, etc., seems to fit the bill. s
The 512MB version can be had for under $100, with an expansion SD slot that supports 2GB cards. FM reception is quite good, and the product has received generally good reviews, with few complaints overall about Sandisk products. That's why i bought mine (the 1GB Sansa.)
I have noticed that the mp3 players you were looking at were 256 mb.On mp3 format most songs are 128mps(personally i prefer 256 which sounds much better) this would allow you to hold about 64 songs (assuming each song is 4 minutes long). A Creative MuVo Micro N200 1gb has fm and is only 117$.
hey
