My son keeps telling me that leaving multiple internet sites open on the computer has no effect on speed. We have cable & each have our own computer on a network.I think that when he has all these different sites open (straight dope, etc) that it has too effect the available bandwidth. Thanks tim
Tim,
There's a limit, of course. Just browsing a little bit won't noticeably harm the other person using internet. But doing downloads and uploads (also p2p), heavy gaming, and receiving large email-attachments will certainly lower the speed of other connections.
It depends on both the maximum speed (there's slow cable and fast cable, depending on the price you pay for it) and the use made of the connection.
It's easy to check. Measure the speed of the internet connection if you're the only one using it, and measure it while your son is heavily using it. That's objective prove. I can't recommend any particular site by head, but http://www.google.com/search?q=internet+speed&meta= will certainly lead you to good sites for it.

Hope this helps.

If the sites are full of some sort of streaming media, or is set to refresh every so often, then it's possible... Otherwise, once the site is loaded, it isn't using any additional bandwidth.
If things seem slow, I might suggest you scan both systems for spyware. The more you find, the more you should be using a browser like Mozilla Firefox to avoid such things from reoccurring.
