I've been using Darn Passwords! for about 2 years and it works fine, but now I'm intrigued by how many people have said they use Roboform. Is it that good?
I love Roboform -- I would be dead in the water without it!!!
After reading everyones response, I might be a sitting duck, but so far with the aid of Zone Alarm and being a cautious surfer, I have not had any problems
I've been using Passphrase Keeper for 3 years now and it has worked well. It uses a database to store the passwords and is easy to use. It is $19.95

All my passwords are stored on a portable hard drive which is never used when a system is online, and also needs a password before it can be accessed. I change them regularly and have never had a hacking problem. I never bank online, far too risky in my opinion. Besides, i like to talk in person to the bank staff. Call me old fashioned, but i prefer the personal touch rather than rely on a computer for everything.
Much more enjoyable and much safer.
When I first register on a site, I print the registration form with the password before hitting Enter. The papers are all filed in a book at my computer. Also filed are forgotten passwords since they are sent to me when I request. If I change one, I will also change it on the paper form.
Store on removable media
I have used roboform for several years now and am very impressed with it. When I do my back-ups, I always include the roboform data. I gladly paid the small price and when I had a problem, they answered me right away. I would be lost without it.
Sure, it probably could be cracked if someone got hold of it, knew what it was, and had time and the right tools. But it has an innocuous name, a JPG extention, and is stored in a folder with 100 random image files. It's a reasonable risk for the convenience of opening one document with one password which has hundreds of obscure passwords and related information (links to sites, usernames, date registered, etc). It has saved me a lot of time and bother over many years.
I use Roboform and Norton Password Manager. I have my logon to windows password protected so that's one I DO have to memorize. I like Roboform better than Password manager because it fill forms and submits them. You can also go immediately to your site of choice and be logged in with Roboform-all from the tray option. I am cheap and use the free version of Roboform and have not upgraded NPM because it came free with NSW 2004. I do also try to print the pass words out occasionally and lock them up.These are great tools and with a good firewall you can have convienience and safety.
A single, simple user i.d. / password combination for all non-monetary, no-way sensitive websites.
A single, complex user i.d. / password combination for all monetary or sensitive websites.
These password / user i.d. combinations are entered into a text file, with a related shortcut placed on the Links directory in Favorites. With Links enabled on the browser, user i.d.'s & passwords are very accessible.
Any website-assigned user i.d.'s are also recorded in the text file.
Any other information needed frequently or infrequently on the internet can be entered into the same text file. My file currently is about 150 lines long, with "Control + F" facilitating the location of needed data.
I have used Darn! Passwords! since 1999, and have not found any software even remotely close in quality and function. I have compared several other programs, including RoboForm, and Darn! Passwords! is much better (for me) by far. I do use RoboForm for form filling, and it's great for that. There are two versions of Darn! Passwords!, and I use the pro version.
In 1999, I talked several times with Dan Veaner, creator of Darn! Passwords!, and he was always willing to listen and improve the software to meet what his customers needed.
You can generate passwords using upper and/or lower case letters, numbers, and can choose how many characters the password will be. Once the information is placed into the program, you simply click one button to be taken to the website for that particular password, and can then drag and drop both your username and password in the appropriate login boxes. You can also place other information into the program for drag and drop, such as a credit card number or bank account. The program has several levels of encryption that you can choose, and I use the highest level, Blowfish encryption, for security. The program does much more, too much to mention here. Thornsoft Development, Inc. bought rights to the program some time back, and continues to improve the software. See www.darnpasswords.com for further information. Thornsoft allows a free evaluation of the software. (I have no affiliation with Thornsoft)
In summary, Darn! Passwords! is the most used program on my PC, and I would be lost without it. I have recommended the software to many of my friends and coworkers, and every one of them (literally) is still using the software. Try Darn! Passwords! - and you'll be using it too!
I use ''Roboform Portable'' installed on a USB Key. I can take them with me and use them when needed. I can use them on any computer that I use.
I use my PDA's software, I have a category just to keep track of sites to which I had registered before.
This way I can access it in my laptop, but also it's handy in my PDA where ever I go.

i am afraid i refuse to be modern. when the world is a safer place, i might put sensitive things on my computer.. until that time, i put no credit card numbers or social security number on my computer at all. the only passwords are for site i want to enter or computer itself. while i would not like anyone to hack into my computer, that is still fixable. financial information can be a nightmare if hacked into. i learned my lesson when a hacker got over 3 million credit card numbers from banking institutions, including mine. to me, computers and numbers just don't go together at this time. probably not in my lifetime. i will play it safer and keep my numbers on paper where they belong. not in my computer. if i cannot call with a credit card number, i don't need what that company has to sell. i can call or visit my bank. no online banking for me. that is asking for trouble.
