Confusing Connection Problems

by sandilew - 6/13/05 2:59 PM

I am totally baffled by a strange behavior I've been experiencing of late. My computer tells me I'm connected. For a while, even my instant messenger programs will tell me I'm connected. But I'm not!

I usually discover the lost connection by trying to send an e-mail message, or open a web page. It has even occurred that I held conversations on msn messenger, but could not send mail or open a web page (page cannot be found, please make sure you are connected to the Internet) and so forth.

So what I have to do is tell my computer to disconnect, and then connect again. And this will go on indefinitely all day long. On some days it will just happen for a few hours, on other days (such as today) it has been happening the entire day.

Thinking this was possibly static on my phone line, I plugged my land phone into the computer line (I have a seperate line for the PC) but the connection was clear and good. I called my best friend who lives about 1/8 or so mile off. Oddly enough she is telling me that she is having the very same problem!

Does anyone know anything about this strange behavior, and what I need to do to correct it? I'm about to go batty it's getting on my nerves so badly. I can't get anything done. Having to disconnect and reconnect all day long really sucks!

Static on your phone line will disconnect you

The static doesn't have to be bad enough for you to hear it when making a phone call to effect your modem. Have you contacted your phone company? Ask them to check the line for static. But be advised, most phone companies aren't concerned with your internet problems. If you are able to use the phone for voice calls, it is often their only obligation.

Confusing Connection Problems

Actually yes. Last week there was considerable static on the line, so I had the phone company come out and check it. When they were here they did not hear any, but the representative still did some minor things that may help, such as disconnect a short line that was no longer in use at another area but part of my line. And he cleaned the connections. He seemed very sincere in wanting to help and fix the problem. After he left the line worked great for several days.

The past two days there has been quite a nice breeze blowing constantly. Could that possibly have anything to do with it? Maybe still being connected, but poor line quality? And is there anything at all I can do to control this situation if that should be the case?

Hi John,

Actually, someone on another help site has given some suggestions, and I'm trying them out. So far, things have gone well. So I will check back tomorrow and either cry for more help, or tell all I've found the solution.

Thanks for helping,
Sandie
