nutty software problem

by lizziealso - 6/9/05 5:59 AM

hello. i have a sony vaio (pcvrx540). While trying to use my application recovery cd i got the message "this recovery cd is not for your computer". so i went to the sony help site and found the solution for my problem. I need to reinstall my Sony Shared Library. Simple right? Well no. It is on the cd i can't access and because my computer is a few years old, sony no longer carries it for download. Well, after spending a whole day going round and round with the "livehelpchat" and e-mails,i have decided they can't help me. Does anyone on here have an idea? Can i hack my own cd? Thanks, Lizzie

This also happens when...

You've changed the OS on the machine. The only workaround is to install the OS that Sony supplied, then the applications CD and then upgrade the OS.

Before all that, we get to backup what we can't lose.

-> What's on that software CD that you need?

Thank you. I have the same old windows xp that came with the computer when i bought it-no upgrades-i haven't even put sp2 on it yet. I needed to reinstall my pc-cillion. Thats when i discovered the error. I can't get in and the utilities i need to fix the problem are on that same cd! What a catch 22 situation. Sony download no longer carries them. i guess i am too out of date. Liz

PC-cillin

One of our PCs is this version of the VAIO.

When our hard drive crashed about a month ago, we didn't have a problem using the Sony recovery disk. We restored the original content on a new drive, but we ended up uninstalling the ancient PC-Cillin 2000. We decided to try Computer Associates' ''free for a year'' offer on microsoft.com instead. It seems to be working fine.

Anyway, I agree with your point - there really isn't any need to restore PC-Cillin.
