I just signed up and have received my hardware and kept my old phone number. It will take me sometime to get use to dailing eleven numbers to place a local call and not being able to see the callers name on the caller ID. I understand that might change in the future.
The cost savings is worth it.
VOIP LETS GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL!!!
i love the voip system but if you use tivo or some call in security service, you may want to use with caution. the voip service doesnt work well for these devices. im not saying it wont work, but dont expect it to work consistantly. i find myself having to manually update the tivo about once a week(basically making several attempts before it finally successfully downloads). it works only when i remove the lan cable from my pc, i guess the data from the pc confuses the tivo as it tries to download updates. its great other than that.
CERTANLY ITS A NICE SYSTEM MORE ECONOMIC BECAUSE I CAN CALL TO ALL USA AND CANADA BY 29.99 A MONTH AND I CAN TALK VERY CLEAR IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CALL
Yes I have VOIP through Vonage and love it. I was contemplating it and sounded to good to be true. Well in January of 2005, I decided to give it a try. I have had it ever since. The quality of ooutgoing, and incomming calls are as good or better than regular phone lines. I have only once experienced trouble with having to redial a number due to echoing of my voice as I spoke. The features are excellent and the price is also great if you have cable or cable internet. As far as 911, you register your phone. I have had to call 911 on 3 ocassions because of my elderly family member that lives in the home and has fallen. The respond time is no quicker than land line once you have the number registered. Each company is a bit different. I had the opportunity to try 4 different VoIP companies, I msut say that Vonage and Packet 8 are your best. To me the best inbound and outbbound reception of the companies I have tried are Vonage and Packet 8. As far as number portability, that is another subject. All companies are poor in providing this service, including land, wireless, and VoIP. I must agree VoIP is the worse. I know of people that have been waiting over 3 months for thier number portability change. Customer service with Vonage I must say it is the worse if you expect ot call and get someone at the other end. They do answe their Emails very quickly and thorough, but getting someone on the other end... that is almost non-existant. I have never had to use them in the 6 months I have had their service.
I had to vote with the answer "no, but considering it" only because there wasn't an answer that said no, I will not us VoIP.
The reason is because I will use my cell phone. I do not want to be tied to any computer for voice communications and that is whey VoIP will not work for me. Also, we DO NOT have a land line. Since our children (all out of the house at this time and using Verizon cell phones) have cell phones, we all communicate with cells and not wired or broadband.
Regards,
John
I have purchased all the gear for it: (Linksys Series-G router with Vonage adapters) but I just haven't gotten the time to reconfigure everything yet.
Also, If it is to be really useful to me it will be for my business and I have to be really careful there before dumping a working system, so I will probably phase it in gradually.
Cost is therefore not the issue with me, in fact it is probably costing me money not to do it at this point.
I look forward to your reader's discussion of possible downsides.

As you are rapidly finding out here, VoIP service is the perfect replacement for high Long Distance charges and it not now, nor will it ever likely be, a replacement for ordinary telephone service.
There is not a single VoIP provider who can guarantee immunity from power failure, immunity from internet congestion, immunity from ISP troubles, true 911 service, true modem service or true Local Number Portability. These services, which are native to wireline telephone technology, are impossible to achieve with today's infrastructure and the customer premise equipment available in the market today.
If you have a Long Distance bill that tops about $30 per month, you are a candidate for VoIP. If you don't, you aren't. If you are willing to tolerate without complaint the absence of the features I just listed you are a candidate for putting all of your eggs in the VoIP basket. If you are not willing to tolerate the lack of even one of those features without complaining, keep your phone line.
Voice quality is not quite as good as a landline, but unlimited calls for $30 a month can't be beat. Neat services like locate me, do not disturb, call filtering, conference calling, etc.
I don't understand how dialind Cell will work. Similarly, dialing 911.
Nice way to turn and opportunity to share personal experiences into an advertisement so you can make a buck.
I hope your lack of respect for the forum turns into a denial of business.
Yes, I have VoIP service and equipment through Vonage, since Feb. '05. I love it. The equipment was free. I paid for S/H charges only. The quality of the incoming, and outgoing telelphone calls is good. I pay $25.00 each for two plans; one plan for me, and one for my son. There's no going back to the old way. My teenage son, and I are very satisfied with the service, and I am very pleased with the cost. You know, teenagers love to talk alot.

I HAVE BELLSOUTH DSL EXTREME AS THE BROADBAND PIPE. I FIRST TRIED LINGO AS THE VOIP PROVIDER. THEY WERE A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT. DROPPED CALLS, NO DIAL TONE, CAN'T BE CALLED! I FINALLY DROPPED THEN AND WENT TO VONAGE. THIS COMPANY KNOWS VOIP. THEIR SERVICE HAS EXCEEDED ALL MY EXPECTATIONS. NO SERVICE PROBLEMS AT ALL. WE ALREADY HAD 2 LANDLINES BUT WITH A VOIP NUMBER OF A DISTANT CITY, ALL OUR RELATIVES CAN NOW CALL US TOLL FREE BY DIALING ONLY A 7 DIGIT NUMBER. WE ALSO USE THIS VOIP AS A TOLL FREE LINE FOR OUTBOUND LD. VOIP WILL BE A MAJOR THREAT TO THE LOCAL BELL COMPANIES. GIVE VOIP A TRY. I GUARANTEE YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.
I have been using the paid version of VOIP through a subscription with providers like VOIP.ORG and MYWEBCALLS.COM and the satisfaction is 100%.
Don't waste time with any subscription with providers like SKYPE, skype is an ok service when it is used as a messenger service like MSN or Yahoo both of which also support voice and do it as good or better. So ask yourself the question Do you need Skype?
Skype really needs to improve on its paid services whats free cannot be questioned but whats paid for should be accountable and with SKYPE it is NOT.
I use the SKYPE service specifically for communicating with out of state and out of country relatives. I would not give up my regular telephone service or cell phone service for it, but it serves a very special purpose, including the ability to use it as an instant messenger, by typing. Most important...this aspect of it is that's it's free. Hearing far away voices, and talking as long as I want to, for the price, is a very big bonus. Quality is still not like regular phone service, but I'm sure that it will get steadily better.
We're very pleased with VONAGE VOIP service. Quality is far better than SBC. The 911 issue is much overblown as we were able to confirm by a test call that we can reach the correct emergency operator. We connect via a Broadband/CATV provider. Options that are extra-cost or not available on SBC are included in base price. Configuration via website is easy. Cost is less than half of conventional service. We strongly recommend it. Its a phone service of the future that is available now.
