The "no content contract" swindle

by mihalovits - 6/6/05 3:53 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

When I first switched to Alltel, the terms of my contract were spelled out in the pamphlet that they handed me with the coverage area in another map that they handed out. The actual contract simply refered to the plan name.

2 years later when I was hit with a couple of hundred dollars in roaming and long distance fees for an area that was supposed to be covered, I couldn't prove that this was true (although I specifically requested that particular state when I signed up) because I kept only the contract, not the pamphlets. Alltel claimed that they couldn't verify what was in my contract because of it's age.

The next time I signed a contract with a cell phone company, they didn't want to give me a copy of my contract with any specifics at all - I insisted on it and kept all the pamphlets, maps, etc..

Was lied to by Cingular

by bderou2 - 6/6/05 4:15 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

I have to admit, I tried several of the phone companies. Most of my switching was due to not being satisified by one thing or another.

I left Sprint because I had moved to another city and simply wanted to stay on the same plan. They said I couldn't, so I left them for T-Mobile

T-Mobile's coverage was a joke. If I was in nearly any building, I couldn't use my phone when my friends on other services could. I loved how their plans were set up, but what good was it when I couldn't talk?

Cingular was the one that really lied to me and that's why I left them. When I signed up, I was getting one of their old TDMA plans and an older phone which I didn't care for that much. I asked if I could change phones and plans before my contract was up if it was an upgrade. I said I knew I'd have to pay full price for the phone, but that I was willing. They assured me it was ok. About 6 months later, I decided I was ready to switch phones to a newer phone which woudl require me to get on a GSM plan. After selecting a phone, Cingular now said that I COULDN'T change until my contract was out, even being willing to spend over $300 on a phone!!After arguing with a manager, I cancelled my service and switched to Verizon. I've never looked back!

Publicize Cingular's ripoff

by cingularripoff - 6/6/05 9:03 PM In reply to: Was lied to by Cingular by bderou2

The best way to get the attention of this company is to contact your local city's business editor and refer them to the forums here as well as "Complaints.com". I found these forums by accident by typing "ATT to Cingular" and was relieved to find that CINGULAR had been lying and misrepresenting the situation to several other people, as well.
I'm in Miami. If you find enough folks in your own town who are feeling as you are, a small claims class action will get some media attention. It's not about the money, it's about the principle of a company this large treating its customers like they were dumb as rocks - which we were to have chosen them.
THe experience of an ATT rep on these forums, give you an insiders view of how cingular is treating everyone. Glad to see you took the time to post.

cingular eh?

by humbleman2 - 7/12/05 8:48 AM In reply to: Publicize Cingular's ripoff by cingularripoff

well i know every one has a problem with them right? the only thing i have not heard yet is any positive thinking! There are great qualities with every company and horrible ones that come along as well. Yes when cingular bought ATT maybe they didnt have everything right but they are fixing the problems and do have good services! If u have signed on with any cellular company first u should have read and researched what u were getting into and if u had not then its ur own fault! secondly if u were an att subscriber and are having difficulties then blame ATT becuase the way they set up the merger and package gave cingular very little room to do anything. look into that then holler about discrpencies!

Settle

by Opopanax - 8/16/05 12:29 AM In reply to: Publicize Cingular's ripoff by cingularripoff

You're treated like an idiot because 9/10 callers is an idiot. Buddy of mine had a woman whose phone didn't work, and it ended up that she just didn't know where the on button was.
They aren't lying to you, there's just a lot of idiots in care. If you don't trust who you're speaking with, hang up and call back.

Also, you can't sue, read your terms and conditions.

Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier - Nextel

by lynnmooney - 6/6/05 7:26 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

I need to purchase a new Treo for my business and Nextel will not let me out of my contract unless I pay them $200.00 even though they do not offer a compatible product. Nextel has been promising a Treo-type product for about 18 months and still isn't even close to bringing anything to market.

"Local" number wasn't local

by psemerson - 6/6/05 7:37 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

When I moved from Colorado to California seven years ago (somewhere around the end of the Bronze Age for cellular) I found that my phone didn't work with Airtouch. I agreed to a new phone (which was analog) and a new "local" number in my area code of 760.

However, Airtouch assigned the 760 number out of an exchange of Victorville -- which is more than 80 miles from my home in Palm Springs. As a result, anyone calling my "local" cell number ended up paying long-distance charges, and I found long-distance charges for calls made from my cell phone to businesses less than a mile away from my home.

I put the phone back in the box, found another cell carrier and bought another phone with true local connectivity, and ate the monthly charges from Airtouch for a year, until I could cancel the contract.

And yes, I complained to the company and to the state public-utility authorities. I received no response from either entity.

T-Mobile Nokia

by Visualdude - 6/6/05 7:46 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

My service was great for almost a year, but then I couldn't get a descent signal in my own home, other places I had a great signal when other services didn't. The sales rep told me that the PIN card could be the problem with my Nokia, so being a techie, I pulled the card and cleaned the contacts without any change. They also waived the extra monthly charge on my extra phones, but decided that was only for the first year and started to charge me for them. I've looked at other services and was ready to signup with Cingular until I saw the $150 per line early cancellation fee. Give me a break, yeah 14 years ago the carriers may have been pay a few hundred dollars for phone, but in todays disposable electronics market I would have to believe that the cost is more like $50. In some states they have to prorate it down from $240, which is still pretty steep. So I may go prepaid, but then you have to worry about getting the top tier service from a carrier.

You've got to ask the right questions....

by jchickory - 6/6/05 8:01 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

The only wireless carrier that I have ever dealt with is Cingular. Not that I particularly care for them but that the other carriers haven't really offered compelling alternatives.

My current phone is Nokia 6340i. It is capable of coverage on GSM 850/1900 Mhz, TDMA 800/1900 Mhz, AMPS 800 Mhz. My current contract is a nationwide GAIT plan.

My two year contract is up the end of July, 2005. When my phone started to get flaky, I inquired about an upgrade. I was told, at that time, that I would be eligible at the end of March, 2005.

So I waited. At the end of March, I checked my account online. It said that I was eligible but there was a technical error that wouldn't let me complete a transaction online. So I made a call to Sales.

Sales told me I wasn't eliglble until the end of July when my contract ended but wouldn't tell me why.

After some sleuthling through the available phones and plans online, I have come to the conclusion that they no longer want to offer or service TDMA/AMPS hence no more GAIT.

Previously, I have had to make repeated calls and talk to different people to get satisfactory asnwers to questions usually of a technical nature. Eventually I get to someone that both takes me seriously AND takes the time to get a valid answer.

I'm a license Amateur Radio operator and I understand that wireless phone service is, ultimately, a radio service and will always have the limitations of such.

Wirelss marketing is always trying to compete with a wired service that was established decades ago and had all those years to develope infrastructure.

As the wireless infrastructure and technology continues to develope and mature, the relative positions of wired and wireless services will flip-flop. Many of the wireless issues that concern us now will be less frequent and less significant over time.

Patience, gentlemen, but never be totally content.

Charged Double for Downloads

by BunnyBuns - 6/6/05 8:31 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

When my contract with Cingular expired, I switched providers because I regularly had problems with reception despite living in a large city. Several friends had T-Mobile and recommended it highly, so I went with T-Mobile. When I signed up, I got a new phone and thought it would be fun to download a few wallpapers, ringtones, etc. from the T-Mobile website ... until I got my phone bill. I was charged at least TWICE for every single download!! Since I'm not an idiot and know how to download, I called T-Mobile to remove the incorrect charges. The first rep I spoke with insisted I had, in fact, downloaded everything twice. I hung up and called again, and the second rep acknowledged there must be a glitch in the system. However, I was still made to feel like they were doing me a huge favor by removing the charges - a ''one-time customer good will'' waiver. Ultimately, it took more than three months to resolve the situation. One rep would remove the charges, another would add them back on, another rep would remove the charges, another would add them back on. I ended up buying a cable and software that would allow me to transfer files to and from the phone myself because it was cheaper ($39.99) and far less of a hassle.

On top of that, I signed up for their automatic bill payment service, but get charged a ''late payment fee'' almost every month, a nice little trick since T-Mobile determines when the bill gets paid. So, of course, I have to call T-Mobile to get that fee removed.

All of this combined with the crappy phone access (I get a ''network busy'' message about 60% of the time when trying to make a phone call) makes me very sorry indeed that I switched to T-Mobile. I'd like to get rid of my home phone and go completely cellular, but I don't dare. I'm not sure I'd be able to make a phone call in case of an emergency. As soon as my contract expires, I'll be switching to another provider.

Swindled - not sure

by n8pu - 6/6/05 3:09 PM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

Not sure if I could call it being swindled or not, but very aggravating. We had a one year contract with Cell One, which we went a year past the contract, so that was not an issue. When we did change carriers we terminated our service in the middle of a billing cycle, we had some credit coming back to us; we were told that before we could get that $10 dollars we would have to wait for 3 billing cycles to pass, O.K. I can sort of understand that, but after the 3 cycles we ask about the re-fund, and were told something to the effect it would take them another 3 billing cycles before it would be processed. I’ll bet you can guess just what I think of Cell One. NO WAY will we ever go back to them; it too bad where I live it is still quite rural so some of the big names provider companies’ coverage would best be described as spotty.

Looked in to a Cell phone though

by JBengeII - 7/13/05 1:31 AM In reply to: POLL: Been swindled by a cell-phone carrier? by tmoynihan

"Verison"
The main concern I had was with a picture phone, They had a charge to transfer pictures to a comupter. In order for me to use a USB adapter they were going to charge me for it! When I heard that I walked away.I still don't have a cell phone and for what I want in one and what they are going to charge for( even if it's any amount)I'm not going for it.Nuff said!
