Can Not Get Task Manager To Run In Windows XP Home Ed.

by Airbus300 - 5/28/05 6:31 AM

Ever since I've had my Dell 4600 Dimension Desktop (2 yrs.), something's gone awry with my ''task manager''. I have the latest SP2 pack installed. Anyway, task manager after booting up will NOT automate and run any tasks as scheduled. Nor can I get it to run at anytime, period. Anyone with lots of experience feel challenged by solving this one? I've exhausted my resources including Windows free on line knowledge base and phone support. I've even done a OS reinstall. I think a file somewhere is corrupted. Thanks.

One windows XP error message I receive is this:

''General Page Initialization Has Failed,
error 0x80041315. Specific Error: task scheduler service is NOT running. Error occurred attempting to retrieve task account information''

Typical of account issues.

I run into this with owners that try to reduce the accounts to the "one." They think that since they are the only user, and maybe prior Windows 98 users they need to remove all other accounts.

http://www.google.com/search?q=0x80041315 starts off with the MS articles that write about the issue when you remove the administrator accound or even rename it.

Reinstalling does not recreate such accounts or such so your story of "reinstall" is proper that it does not fix this.

Another issue is that some don't like that the scheduler requires an account. Again, various damage is done to thwart such and I see this error in these cases too.

-> In closing, there is not enough written for me to tell if your machine suffered such changes or is under siege by trojans, spyware or worms.

if either of these Microsoft articles help you. They are not specifically for XP but MIGHT give you an idea for something you haven't tried.

While I am sure Bob is right, I did notice that you are using Task Manager as if it is Task Scheduler--these are two different things.

Just in case, make sure Task Scheduler is not turned off in Services.

To do this click START, the click on RUN.
When the RUN window opens type services.msc in the box and click OK.

The Services panel will open--scroll down to Task Scheduler and make sure it is set to Automatic. If it is not, double click on it and the Task Scheduler window will open. In the Start-Up box set to Automatic. Click APPLY (at the bottom), then Click OK and close the services panel.
