hard drive may be failing / errant application

by thecompdoc - 5/27/05 9:57 AM In reply to: Windows XP takes a long time to startup by dream431ca

I have found that this can be a symptom of the hard drive failing. Have you checked the task manager to see if some application is using all your cpu time.

Hard Drive Going Bad

by cynthian - 5/27/05 11:15 AM In reply to: hard drive may be failing / errant application by thecompdoc

I saw that Compdoc mentioned a hard drive going bad as a possible reason for the long start-up. I've had this problem and only discovered the slow death of a hard drive after trying to defrag it. At first it was only a few sectors and then bit by bit over a perioud of months, more and more of the hard drive went bad and couldn't be defragmented. But if this isn't the issue, then (as someone else suggested) I would look at running "msconfig" and see what isn't needed as a first step after doing all the general maintenance like defragging the HD, running a good Anti-Spyware program, and tuning up the Registry.

If you do run "msconfig" only remove the software entries you know before removing any of the rest, otherwise you might have another problem when you boot up.

I've used a lot of different software to do all these tasks, but have settled with V-Com's "Fix-It 5.0" for all around maintenance, and Sunbelt's "CounterSpy" for a very good addition to Spybot 1.3 (freeware.)

Hard disk SMART log reader.

by Bob Richmond - 5/31/05 10:02 AM In reply to: hard drive may be failing / errant application by thecompdoc

Modern computer bios contain a technology called SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis & Reporting Technology) that interfaces with modern disk drives using the EIDE specification and contains a log of many hard disk working attributes. If you download the free DiskCheckup program from the Passmark website (http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm) it will read this log and report the attributes. This is a small program and downloads fast. It also does not have to be run until you want to read the log, so takes no system resources when it isn't running.

To check your hard drive:
- Start the DiskCheckup program.
- At the top of the program window you will find a ''Select Drive'' drop down list of your disk drives. Select the drive you want to check from that list and click on the ''Get Info'' button.
- The list in the top box will give you drive information, but this isn't what you need to see how the drive is doing. The bottom box will show you the SMART attributes and this is what you really should be looking at. Even thought some of the attributes may not be familiar to you, there is a column named ''Status'' that will tell you how the drive is doing. If it says "OK" on all the attributes your drive is working fine.

SP1 triggered long startup

by xenroner - 5/27/05 10:09 AM In reply to: Windows XP takes a long time to startup by dream431ca

My computer took much longer to startup after I installed SP1. Although awhile ago, I am pretty sure that was the event that cause the startup to take much longer than it had before SP1 was installed.
Don't know if that helps anyone, of if anyone has other ideas.

My penny's worth....

No doubt you have read all the ways to check and fine tune your system, as well as doom and gloom on what could be going wrong.

One thing I do every year or so is to back up the whole HD, I usually take the opportunity to buy a new larger HD at this time as well as prices are always dropping per Gb.Reformat and reinstall Windows and applications from scratch.
This allows me to offload some of the stuff that we all install but never use, as I just install what I really need.

I have just completed the annual process (takes a full day with updates etc) and now my PC starts up quickly and smoothly.

Windows XP takes a long time to startup

by hchudson - 5/27/05 12:46 PM In reply to: Windows XP takes a long time to startup by dream431ca

Hi
This solves your problem, but does not go to the root of the problem.

When you turn your computer off, you see three icons:
Standby
Turnoff
Restart

Click on Standby and the icon changes to hibernate. Now continue and that's it.
When you restart you will even have all the programs etc. that were running.

Regards

Henry Hudson

Does not require new software

by actingmark - 5/27/05 1:58 PM In reply to: Windows XP takes a long time to startup by hchudson

First of all, you do not need to purchase software, worry about your hard drive, and so on. There are some simply first stepts to take:
1. Clean you computer of all temp files
2. Defrag your disc
3. Check to see what you have running on startup(those
icons near the time in your system tray). Revome
all but absolute necessity. I have my firewall,
and antivirus--everythig else I load manually.
4. Have you downloaded a lot of new fonts over the
time you have owned your computer? All of these
fonts load at startup. The more you accumulate the
longer your startup. Get rid of any you don't
regularly use.
5. Same as above with programs you no longer use.

There are some start up tweaks which can improve your startup time but they involve editing your registry as well as yoru BIOS. Try the above firsty and see if you do not realize some improvement.

As to the problem with your icons loading slowly you simply need to increase the size of your icon cache. This is a very common problem.

Hope this gets you started.

prevent programs from starting up without permission

by Schimers - 5/28/05 10:07 AM In reply to: Windows XP takes a long time to startup by dream431ca

I use a share ware program called "winpatrol" with scotty the watchdog stopping any prgram that I designate from starting up or being in the tray without my permission. I rarely give permission to even program that I like.

Windows runs a lot better with few running processes.

windows slow starting up

by jojo2430 - 6/1/05 2:42 PM In reply to: prevent programs from starting up without permission by Schimers

I had this problem until i got some help from a microsoft tech on another matter, who said to try this. i went to start menu and under run i put msconfig. under the services tab i selected hide all microsoft services, then disabled the rest. Under start up I disabled all my programs i did not want to start up when i booted. I am still able to access them manually from program menu but they do not start up on their own. windows starts much faster. i left selected, the important start up stuff like anti spyware and antivirus and of course the necessary operating files, I mostly disabled programs i could start myself when i needed them. Read the names of files and locations carefully and you can always go back and reselect if necessary.

Get the help you need

by dvesh - 5/12/06 9:41 PM In reply to: Windows XP takes a long time to startup by dream431ca

IHi guys, I have posted this in another thread but this is the place that this belongs to:

I'm gonna give you some tips for you to speed up your boot times... Let's get to work

1. Click on Start/ Run and type "msconfig" no quotes. The system Configuration Utility Window will pop-up. Click "Services" tab and click the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box. Uncheck all services that are not from Microsoft now, except the services that belong to your Antivirus Program. Click Apply/ OK and Exit without restart the Computer.
2. Go to %systemdrive%/ Windows/ Prefetch and erase everything inside that folder except the folder itself. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT ERASE THE Prefetch FOLDER BUT EVERYTHING THAT IS INSIDE IT!!. So if Windows is installed in C: your folder will be in C:/ Windows/ Prefetch
3. Click on Start/ Run and type "defrag c:" without quotes. Let the system work. Windows will start defraging the HDD.
4. Click on Start/ Run and type "defrag c: -b" without quotes. This is almost the same of step #3 but this command will also put the files Windows uses to boot up in the faster reading zone of your HDD for faster reading times.
5. Download Ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com
Install it and run the cleaner.

After all this I think you are able to do your first Reboot. Don't be scared if the first time you boot up your Computer it takes a little long. I bet after the 2 nd time you boot Windows you will notice a huge difference. There are lots of other things you can do like turning off "disable" all services you don't use at all and are being loaded with Windows every time you start your Computer, Disable the hardware you don't use in the Device Manager, etc. If you need even better boot times after doing what I have posted, please feel comfortable to post back and we will continue with tips and tricks to speed it up. My Computer turns on in 29 seconds and shuts down in 9 sec. I'm able to click any icon and open any windows in 29 sec flat!!

I hope this help

thanks

by sherpard - 5/12/06 11:44 PM In reply to: Get the help you need by dvesh

alright thanks. however i have another problem and i hope u can help me.

bootvis has managed to successfully reduce my startup time. but the thing is that my problem is not that of a slow startup of windows.. well sort of.

the problem is even getting to the Windows xp loading progress bar page. when i press the On button of my computer, it takes about 3 mins to give out the Beep sound and then display anything on the monitor..before the Beep sound, the monitor displays "No video input".. so its although when i press the On button , the computer is like warming up or something and isnt actually running yet.

so what im saying is that after the computer "actually starts up after the beep" , starting up is relatively fast. the only problem is seeing the very 1st black DOS screen and then the Loading windows xp black screen.thats where the long wait is.

do u know how i can solve it?

my specs are windows xp home edition sp2, 512mb ram and intel 2ghz. im not sure whether its a software or hardware problem or some BIOS options or whatever. inside windows inside my computer doesnt really have any problems.

hope someone can help me. thanks guys!
