Discuss the poll for the Wednesday, May 18th AnchorDesk newsletter (http://www.cnet.com/2001-6033_1-0.html):
POLL: What do you look for the most in a car?
1) Fuel-efficiency
2) Speed
3) Aesthetics
4) Family-friendly size
5) Time-travel abilities
I look for cars NOT to be in C|NET. I'm slowly unsubscribing from your newsletters that deal with cars. This is not the place. You must be getting a nice kickback.
C|net was a technology website, and with all the technology jumping into cars, I think it is just a natural evolution.
RELIABILITY
Is it just my red state mentality, or did this article from California start off with a negative bias? I realize it was a non-scientific poll, but high-lighting only the ''perceived'' negative aspects doesn't exactly fill anyone with zeal. Every new product that has become accepted, first went through some difficult beta tests. If there really are software problems, let's here what they are.
Have we learned nothing from Dan Rather, and Newsweek about jumping on a subject before it is substance?
My brother-in-law in Chicago (not an aging Hippie) just bought one based on his neighbors experience. I found it stylish and comfortable, and fun to drive.
My next car will probably be one of these unless they do in fact blow up.

Our Civic Hybrid arrived Memorial Day in 2002. 3 years later we think it is the sweetest car we've ever owned. It may cost a little more, but the tax incentives helped take the sting out and it's been one sweet car to own.
Here's the highlights for us. It's MPG reading is somewhere above 42 over 2+ years. We often hit 500 miles before we fill up and then only 12 or so gallons of fuel. And for service, not much has happened. The CVT (continuously varible transmission) is slick.
Just last week the car started up oddly and the IMA and check engine lights stayed on. I turned it off to read the manual. It noted to turn it off and check the gas cap was on securely (odd, but I'll try it) as well to go ahead and try again. A call to the dealer confirmed the manual and we took it in. Here's what happened.
They checked the computer and the codes were known. They updated the software to correct the problem. AND!!! I think we are now getting an extra mile or two per gallon. Time will tell if the new MPG sticks.
Here's the tip! If you own one of these, call them up to see if there is a software or such update. There was no charge for this and the behaviour of the charging lights and battery level has changed.
We'd buy it again.

I like being able to read what other peoples thoughts are, no matter what the subject is. If I am not interested in the subject, I just go on to other things. H owever I found the hybrid cars very interesting, thank you.
That's why I got myself a Turbodiesel VW Golf Coupé
I could not vote. An important aspect was left out of the choice: Quality/Reputation of vehicle.
Hybrids are a joke. The higher MSRP more than offsets the savings in gas for most drivers. Couple this with the uncertainty - but greater likeliness of the vehicle being a repair hog at higher miles - and the result is that making that purchase is a bad decision.
My recommendation to those who want to save on gas, have a reliable car AND have a reasonable sticker price: Buy a Toyota Echo, Honda Civic or similar...
Why wasn't this added to the poll? It is a very important factor.
Who wants to work on their car? What in the world is travel time ability anyhow? That depends more on the road, the weather, and traffic conditions, not the vechile.
You forgot the most important one. I buy a car that is built with quality and fuel efficient.
Can someone please tell me what "time-travel abilities" really means in this poll??
