New Plasma...questions on 4:3 viewing...

by pookieguy - 5/16/05 1:39 PM

Hello All,

I finally gave in and purchased my first plasma display. The model I decided on after some research was the new Samsung 42" ED Plasma SP-R4232. This model comes with everything, including speakers, dual ATSC/NTSC tuners and most importantly for me, a cableCARD slot and overall appealing design. (card going to be installed this week)

For those wondering...
Yes, I considered the Panasonic model but there were two factors as to why I chose the Samsung. Availability and overall aesthetics. Samsung wins on that one hands down. :)

Anyways,

While some have stated not to worry so much about burn, I'm still a bit concerned about this. For example, the manual states that you should avoid viewing in 4:3 because it may cause screen burn. I'm assuming because of the static bars on each side?

They recommend viewing in 16:9 and Panorama. Panorama actually does a very nice job with standard 4:3 TV viewing in terms of stretching the picture properly. However, I'm still left wondering as to whether or not to avoid 4:3?

This is one of many questions, I'm sure. :)

Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
Thank you!

Full Screen

I watch My HD Plasma almost exclusively in 16:9 mode. At first, people seem a little squatty, but it is not objectionable and you get used to it very quickly. Most of the networks broadcast in HD all evening and I watch that through an off the air antennna. Some HD programming is broadcast in 4:3 and I put up the gray bars when I watch them. For SD programming I stretch it full screen. So far, have had no burn in problems using the set this way. On a plasma, burn in is actually burn out. If you only use a portion of your screen, those plasma cells will burn out faster than the rest of your screen. So, by viewing in 4:3, you are burning out the center of your screen only and not the sides. Same thing on wide screen DVDs, you still may get bars at the top and bottom unless you stretch the image to your screen. The gray bars even out the screen use. If you watch in 16:9 mode 85% of the time, you will never have that problem.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, I'm starting to get used to the panoramic mode on this Samsung as it seems to do a good job at displaying 4:3. The center looks just fine, with just some streching on each side.

I guess you are right. I think I can get used to panoramic more than the fact that I basically lose most of the screen when adjusting to 4:3. :)

4 years and no burn in

Hi,
I have a 4 year old rear-projection TV which is supposed to have even more burn-in than your brand new Plasma. Not one bit of burn in. We watch 4:3 programs often, DVD's in anamorphic 2.35:1 which leaves black bands above and below, plus of course full screen HDTV. Mix of all 3. Side bands in these TVs usually have a gray color to prevent burn-in.
Just enjoy. I hate 4:3 programs expanded, they look unnatural.
