Norton System Works

by berkey - 5/13/05 5:59 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

I have enjoyed using all of the parts of System Works for the past five or six years. However, I am no longer able to get virus updates for 2001 so I'll have to split up the "works" a little. Too bad as 2001 is good stuff - works well and no bloat....

Norton? NEVAH!

by hamboy777 - 5/13/05 6:06 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

Seceral years ago, when my AMD K6-2 500 MHZ computer with 384 MB of memory was new, I tried NSW for a day. It was a resource hog so badly my computer literally STOPPED. I then tried uninstalling NSW, and it took me 3 days to get rid of everything from the registry and drives and get the computer running properly again.

I currently have NIS and that's almost as bad with resources. The only thing worse than both of them is Symantec's technical support. You can't even get hold of anyone for help unless you pay money. I even tried that once, and it cost me a fortune. I wouldn't buy another Symantec product again if you paid me. I can't wait for my subscription to run out so I can use the CA security products my broadband ISP provides for free.

Norton System Works

by FLATFOOT - 5/13/05 6:13 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

I used Norton for years, but recently quit when the renewal came up. They got greedy and really jacked up their prices. I have switched to another brand and have had very good success with it. They have a good product, if you can afford it. I am sure that there are others that are just as good, probably better. CNet has some great evals on products, as does PCMAG and PCWORLD.

Norton System Works 3 Stars

by Darrel J Poppino - 5/13/05 6:13 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

I was using the trial version of NSW2005 and had mixed results. The overall factor that caused me to uninstall it; it's a memory hog. Cleansweep was a nice feature but the anti-virus failed to detect a trojan that a cheaper program did detect. Plus, it seemed to be updating NSW almost daily which I do not know if that's too impress or actually needed updates? After I uninstalled NSW2005 I went and installed Sytem Mechanic. I noticed my pc ran much faster and the System Mechanic did not download updates everyday. And, I have to add that I have been disappointed with NSW since 2002!

Funny you ask..

by PCPOPPO - 5/13/05 6:14 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

I used these products religiously in the earlier days..not anymore. It not only brings your pc to a crawl with all the extra drivers it does not need, and the antivirus works for awhile then stops getting updates then quits all together. Then to fix this you need to uninstall the program which does not go right 90% of the time. If it does not uninstall you are in big trouble. Now you have to go in and manually remove registry entries and files on your drive and hope it will reinstall. After 3 or four times of doing this I scrapped the whole thing. They just can't get it right anymore. Uninstall..reinstall is there way to fix a buggy product. I now use zone alarm inet security package and webroot spy sweeper. Much nicer and no install or run problems.

Norton System Works

by Bookem - 5/13/05 6:25 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

I would stay away from Norton System Works. I had previously spent money on it and expected it would watch my system for me like it did in Windows 98. Yes, it did watch my XP home ed. and reprted back to me. XP though will not let Norton into the task of fixing problems. This I learned when I called Norton help desk and spent the $29.99 American they requested. The techie told me that! So, not only am I out $100 for system works, but now I'm out $29.99 also for the benefit of learning Norton won't work with XP. Save yourself the headache. XP looks after itself. I assume Norton is losing ground quicly.

Norton

In my opinion, Norton System Works 3 was the last good
one and even that version was inferior to free utilities available today. Sygate personal firewall, Avast Anti-virus, Ad-Aware and Microsoft anti-spyware good for starters in that catagory. Other good stuff out there for the taking. Just google or yahoo around awhile for what you need.

Systemworks

by law121 - 5/13/05 6:52 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

I am a computer user with an acceptable level of computer literacy and have found that NSW does cause some problems - when installed. Anti Virus is installed but I run the utilities from the disk when needed, especially prior to and after installing any program. This seems to keep everything working well. I also run the utilities once a week as a part of maintainence.
The pc is running xp but I have done the same with win2k and 98.

Norton

by aCheryl - 5/13/05 6:56 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

Over the years I have found Norton creates as many problems as it solves. It doesn't play well with other programs. My solution was to remove it from all my computers. That worked very well.

Nortons system works is the worst choice

by Grigster - 5/13/05 7:07 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

I formerly owned a copy of Nortons system works 2003
For the first few mounths it seemed to work great . My computer then had a crash the cause is still unknown but the few clues pointer to Nortons system works . I then tryed many times to get help from Nortons .I never got a reply. becase of the lack of help I wouldn't buy Nortons system works 2004 and pluged along with 2003 and used Cnets free downloads on top of that for protection this worked pretty good until the first of this year . It started with a nortons email saying they were not going to update most of the programs anymore . a week later they sent a 14 day trial copy of Nortons system works 2005 .It imeadetly became a royal pain so I tryed to deleat it and reinstall 2003 ; and lo and behold Nortons system works 2003 would not reinstall . I saved my data and reformated . 2003 still wouldn't reinstall . After about a week I tryed 2 anti-virus programs I didn't like then I went back to Mcafees which was the last AV program I was happy with. I got there new sercuity suit . I did have a problem with there spam blocker so I E-mailed them . I got a responce the next morning and information that let me solve the problem in less then 10 min.

Norton Anti-Virus 2005 Doesn't Work

by tommywo - 5/14/05 7:27 AM In reply to: Nortons system works is the worst choice by Grigster

I've been having major problems with Norton as well. I upgraded to NAV 2005 back in January and have had problems with my virus protection ever since. Apparently, Norton has decided to start charging for its automatic live update service so one must manually download all your new virus definitions.

Beyond that, about once every couple weeks the program gives me a pop-up message saying that I need to "register" the program, which involves inputting a new registration code. Although this takes only about 5 minutes, I've discovered that when your computer is "unregistered" your version of NAV 2005 apparently stops working. I tried to ignoring the "register" message and was infected with two trojan viruses.

Have email Norton about this problems at least twice. The first time they responded with a note telling me that NAV 2005 has a program bug that keeps asking for the user to register over/over again. They told me to download a patch, which would fix the problem. I downloaded the patch, but the problem has continued to persist.

I sent Norton a second note advising them of the continued problem, to which they didn't even bother responding. This has led me to assume that they don't really care if I'm a satisfied customer or not. So in response, I think that I'm going to just bite the bullet and go buy McAfee or some other virus protection program to see if that works any better.

Don't Do It!

by paolox3 - 5/13/05 7:30 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

Norton just isn't what it used to be.
2003 was fine. 2004 was buggy and drove me nuts. 2005 can only be worse.

Version 2004 was such a malfunctioning nightmare that I finally would up reformatting the hard drive just to get rid of it.

Live Update -L.U.-kept failing, and my subscriptions kept expiring after one reinstall of L.U. I never got more than one time out of it. Hours on hold on the phone, only to speak with someone with such a thick accent that they were no help at all. No offense - I have a listening-learning disability and have to listen to someone in MY native language clearly.

As far as the rest of the suite, programs kept kicking on all the time and bogging the machine down so that it was unuseable. Task Manager was just filled with dozens of Norton App's running, eating the PC alive. That, and one of them was always crying about something beging wrong, even after it was told to "Fix it" over and over.

If you've got a 3 or 4 gig proc machine with 2 or 3 gigs RAM, you might be able to run Norton and use the PC too.

If you've got problems with the PC, Norton is only going to create more. It's like NSW is all the PC is set up to do - you can't DO anything else once it's installed. Don't do it. You'll regret it.

Not for me

by fnburn - 5/13/05 7:54 AM In reply to: Don't Do It! by paolox3

My experience with Systemworks - not good. Had 2004 and slowed system way down, L/U refused to work and the program just cluttered up everything. Had used Norton products since mid 90's with good success (until acquired by Symantic). A network engineer friend just rolled his eyes when I told him I had installed 2004 and he was right - I luckily uninstalled it w/o too many problems. When I subsequently needed a product like Ghost (not included in my version of 2004), based on prior Symantic experience, I bought True Image. Would not spend the time to acquire a new version even though with rebate deals I could get it for tax and shipping.

Norton System Works

by Det Cornforth - 5/13/05 7:37 AM In reply to: Norton system works: looking for your opinion by sbaxter

My only major problem is with Go Back. I found this interfered too much with my computers speed, and programmes, that I took it off and never used it again. And I did try it several times, always with the same result.
At least that is one option, don't install Go Back.
The rest of System Works, works well, and I have had no problems.
