I was having problems with my operating system.was not able to get updates..so I re-installed xp home..and it put me into another sector of my disk..it looks as if it compressed the files..any exe file or cmd file does not exist any longer..also my music files are no longer accessible..i can see them but they do not operate..the only files that i got to access are my pictures..I have data in ms money..but cannot access or see the files.. is there any way to boot or regain access to my previous progams in a working state?
Have you tried re-installing your applications? If you didn't install Window is the same folder then you have probably lost all the links to your applications and they will have to be restored.
Doesn't matter if you just install Windows over top an older installation, it will obliterate your registry, which means virtually all apps will have to be reinstalled. Making it kind of pointless IMO. Better to just back everything up and format. That way I don't have any left overs hanging around causing problems and I can start completely fresh.
I am the new kid on the block, but it seems a lot of hassle to trash the entire system and start over -- back ups or no.
I just upgraded from Windows ME, and some programs failed to run properly. I am a long time user of SuperWin's programs, particularly "RegVac." After running "RegVac" the system was clean enough to reestablish links. Some programs ran correctly immediately, others required reinstall. I probably have not checked every program on my system yet, but only one I have tried is still balky, and I suspect it is a problem with copywrite (Didn't properly uninstall.)
Unless you are infected reformat seems awfully extreme. My system was really bogged down in Windows ME. (It seems to have a real affection for trash!) Now, with XP I'd swear, if I didn't know better, someone slipped me a faster cpu.
Go ahead and try SuperWin's RegVac. Its shareware, you don't pay if you don't like, and it has a "Novice" mode for dum dums like me.
Last post I mentioned one last "balky" program. Got a quick (four page) response from the vendor. They recommended I down load & run "Windows Install Cleanup Utility." (Try Microsoft's Update site).
I did, and it seems to finish the job others started. It removed the last vestages of the program, plus the sole remaining file from Trend Micro's PC-cillin, and cleared the way for a fresh install of my program.
Be careful: It will list other programs on your disk as well, programs you do not want uninstalled. It gives you boxes to check.
Hope this helps.
