system extra slow starting up

by errolla7 - 5/5/05 5:57 AM

i have a athlon 1.1 gig system that with 128 mb ram that takes an awful long time starting up. It has xp pro. It seems like it takes 5 min to just get to the desktop after taking 5 min to get to the screen that lists all the users. I also have a pentium 3 that only takes only a minute with only 176mbram and less than a gig proocessor speed. The athlon system does have alot more programs on the drive. Can anyone suggest something i can do???? Help!!!!

5 to 10 minutes seems about right with 128MB RAM.

A clean install of XP might start in less time, but when we add firewalls, antivirus, CDRW as disk software I can bet a XP machine with 128MB RAM will take some time to start.

176MB RAM is going to do much better. Another factor is the hard disk speeds.

Re: long startup time.

Try to minimize the number of programs running at startup. See http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=3612&messageID=43565&tag= for example.
Check for viruses and spyware. See http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=99237&messageID=1138135&tag= for a recommendation.

And adding 128 or 256 Mb of memory to this XP Pro machine would make a tremendous difference. It's certainly worth the money!

Slow start

There is no doubt that how many programs you are asking your computer to open at startup can and will slow your PC. As the fellow posters state, check your programs and which ones are set to start at Boot, and also if you haven't cleaned out your PC in awhile from adware, this too may slow things down. Additional ram will also help with the speed of your computer.
I have 2 PC's here - one for the kids and one that I use. The kids always manage to set programs to start at boot, but I always limit the start up proceedure to the minimum. Their PC takes minutes to start up, while mine takes seconds.
Good Luck
