Plasma vs LCD

by melfaria - 1/3/05 6:56 PM

I've heard variable accounts of which is better/lasts longer. I was under the impression that plasma lasted longer, but I'm unsure. I'm looking to buy something over 40'. Any comments would be appreciated.

Just an idea. Look at the warranties.

If there is a difference, they may tip their hand there.

Plasma -vs- LCD

Not sure where you may have read Plasma last longer??? Not true. LCD has a 2-3 times general life span.

In a fist fight:

Watching HDTV and DVD movies
LCD wins (most of the time, generally better processors)

Watching Fast action sports
PLasma wins (LCD is subject to gosting, some can see some can't)

Color adjustment
Plasma has a edge due to the number of black levels

Video game use
LCD hands down. Dont even use game consoles on a Plasma. You WILL fry the screen!

Durabilty/Stablity
LCD most of the time. (The LCD technology has been around for 30+ years and is as solid as tube TV's.) Plasma is still a bit querky. You can and will get image burn on a Plasma from any type of vewing. The network logos you see on many chanels and info bar on news stations can and will burn into the screen. Plasma also fight with higher elevation and temp changes if this is a issue.

Price tag
Plasma hands down for the size you are looking at 42"+ unit. You will price tags about 30% more for the same size LCD.

Features
Typicaly LCD. Most Plasma units are monitor only with less video inputs.

The fight is on for the next 3-5 years. Plasma will get more bells and whistles and LCD will have the prices drop in the large screen size market.

Pretty soon you will see a monitor the size of a 4x8 sheet of plywood. I don't know where you can put it. But some is making them for guys like LeBron who will pay 30K for a TV.

For the record I have a Sharp LC-37GD6U (LCD) and love it.

Plasma vs LCD

Between LCD and Plasma you will be better off buying a DLP. Lasts much longer than any of them, has better picture quality and is very light.

New Plasmas--60,000 hours!!

by Raja Bhat - 4/30/05 8:23 AM In reply to: Plasma vs LCD by melfaria

That is the expected lifespan of new Panasonic Plasmas being released now (April 2005)Still, the first 100 hours are crucial, and we need to watch a variety of different programming and not for instance DVDs all the time with black bars above and below the actual picture.
