I am still trying to purchase a new large media centre laptop. Have been considering the HP Pavillion 8110 new in stores this month. Still has the same drawbacks of super loud fans and running hot..but a great computer. Did not much like the old 17 inch Qosmio.....what about the G20?
Not crazy about the super shiny black, gets covered with finger prints in about a second...and the touch pad has been made a bit like sandpaper..more traction yes but comfort to use?????
Please let me know what anyone thinks about this machine, I was very dissapointed with CNET review as they have not reviewed the newest laptops yet!
Hot heavy unit with no battery life. Not a notebook. No 64-bit capable CPU.
I'd wait for the next wave.
Bob
I was curious to know where / how you know about this new HP? DO you live in Canada? I have anxiously been awaiting the arrival of an HPzd8000 that uses Intel Centrino technology. HP released an article saying that they were launching a Centrino line including the zd8000 in the Middle East a month ago, but havn't heard anymore on it. Thanks for any Info- Anyone?
Hi there,
Yes, I am in Canada and the zd 8110 is out in stores here now as of a week ago. It is the pentium 4 version 630 processor. Still has the same internals at the other zd8000 series only it now has speedstep, is a bit faster, and way cheaper. The first incarnation of zd8080 was around 3000.00 Cdn. but the newer version which is better is 2500.00 Cdn.
Can you send me the link about the centrino zd 8000?
Thanks
Terry
I originally found this link on Middle East news sites, but they got it right from HP middle East site.

I thought it might be bogus, but I guess not. If they have announced the launch over a month ago, why are they still not available?
Just came across it yesterday at a local Future Shop shop. It's like BestBuy. Actually, I think BB owns FS. Or visa-versa. Any how, I loved the look of the new G20! The screen is to die for. Probably the best screen I've seen on the market today. For a laptop of course.
Did notice the touch-pad was rougher. But that didn't bother me. I figure eventually I will be picking up an external mouse of some sort. Wired or wireless (Bluetooth). Speaking of which...the G20 supports Bluetooth!
As for getting paw prints on the black gloss finish...not sure how much that would bother me over time. The key words there are "over time". Even if we had a silver keyboard area I supposed we would be wipping it down eventually too. Maybe less.
Only thing turning me off is it's asking price. It's running currently at $3500.00 Canadian. A bit hight if you ask me. Even if it does come with 120GB worth of HD space and a killer screen. Not to mention the "piano gloss black" finish. ![]()
My 2 cents...I might still pick it up btw...but I am considering the Dell Inspiron 9300 and XPS too. Which are better values IMHO.
This is a desktop alternative and is best suited to use on a desk or table rather than a lap. It fills a maket niche where people want a decent spec machine but without all of the bulky mess that generally comes with a desktop PC (base unit, keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers and lots of wires). It's ideally suited to people who want powerful wireless multimedia capabilities and a certain degree of portability. As it is best suited to a table or desk it doesn't really matter that it gets quite hot or that the battery doesn't last very long because most of the time it will be plugged into a mains outlet. I'd suggest it would be best off paired with a wireless mouse and so the questions raised about the feel of the touchpad could be ignored to some extent (a touchpad is never an ideal alternative to a mouse no matter how good it is anyhow).
Toshiba have at last done something that until now only really Apple have managed to pull off successfully, that is to make a computer look sexy! This is simply the most stunning laptop on the market to date with a very high performance to match. Cheaper 17" widescreen 'laptops' are available but none look as good as this or have built in TV tuners and dual RAID disks, most do not have such a good selection of multimedia ports or surface mounted control buttons for playing DVD/CD without booting (including a volume knob) plus a remote control. Most do not have speakers worth listening too (including the Dell 9300 which sounds tinny and pathetic by comparison) or a Dual layer DVD writer or built in wireless and Bluetooth or Windows Media Center.
The only real bad points I can think of are the relatively low 1440 x 900 resolution screen and the lack of a decent sound output for connecting to a HIFI via a quality phono lead (rather than the less than suitable headphone jack - which is mounted too close to the front of the device to provide a nice means of connecting up to an amplifier).
In short this is an expensive piece of kit but you get what you pay for as it is the cutting edge in convergence and minaturisation. If you want to use Microsoft Office whilst sitting on a plane or train then this is not the device for you. If you want a powerful and mobile multimedia PC that doubles as a compact widesceen TV and DVD or music player then you could do a lot worse!
Thanks for the thoughtful comments regarding the new Toshiba Qosmio G20.
Am wondering if anyone knows when they will be released in USA.
