Should I have to pay for Tiger for an iBook I got in Feb?

by grimgraphix - 4/24/05 6:56 AM

My first computer was a Apple powerbook cs190 with a stunning 500 mb hard drive...I then was forced to go to a win 98 machine for work and gaming and it wasn't too bad except for the several hours of maintainence that had to be done every week (the warm glow of the blue screen became a familiar sight over the years). Long story short I needed a portable that was small and powerful and I had a few rabid apple owning friends who talked me back to apple. I have used my iBook for 2 months now and quite frankly I have a few complaints about 10.3 (but not as many as I had about microsoft) but the total performance is awesome!
Still, is my iBook going to end up being like my Sony PS2? In other words, is Apple going to nickle and dime me with an expensive service plan here (needed, by the way since I have 3 friends with apple note books that broke within 2 years of their purchase)?...a $130.00 os update there? Or will Apple be kind and give me a discount for a new OS because I missed the bus by 8 weeks?

Maybe

If you contacted Apple they could answer this question definitively. There is usually a period that customers who purchased an new machine are offered the new OS for a very small price. I have seen it mentioned at $20 and also at $10.
The real skinny is this: If you purchased a Mac on, or after, April 12th 2005, you will be eligible for the Up-to-Date program. The cost of Tiger will be $9.95
Full details here http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ but from what you say, you may have "missed the boat"

Hope this helps

Thanks and keeping my fingers crossed

Thanks for the response...
I hope that what you described is the case...when I got the notebook I was happy to see that Apple had also included a cd of the new iLife 05 with the documentation to supliment the 'o4 edition already on the HD and thought it a classy touch...I also found a series of coupons with the documentation that appeared to be nothing more than proof of purchase cards...hopefully they can be traded in for a discount on the new Tiger OS...I could not figure out any other use for them...has anyone else out there found these cards with their new iBook?

Thanks again, Grim

Try the Apple Up-To-Date site

You can go to http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ to check the requirements for a free upgrade, but it doesn't look good for you. It appears that only computers purchased on or after 4/12 are candidates. Good luck, though.

Still waiting for an answer from apple

by grimgraphix - 4/26/05 6:59 AM In reply to: (NT) I thought I said that by mrmacfixit Moderator

I sent an email to Apple on Sunday April 24th to inquire about any discounts on Tiger OS for recent purchasers of their computers (Feb 3rd,2005 is when I ordered it)...haven't received a response back yet. They are probably busy right now but I will fire off another one tomorrow if I dont hear from Apple by then.

I want it on record that I am not being a whiner (well, maby a little) about this OS change after my purchase in february...its just frustrating considering I could have waited 9 weeks and been entitled to the new OS (it took me 6 months to decide to go back to mac anyway). Apple has a great product but they nickle and dime you...for instance, why is there a $100 difference between the service plan for a Powerbook versus an iBook when you look at comparably equiped models? The only difference I saw was bus speed and ram on the video card on models with the same size screen. sorry...too much coffee this morning and people are staring.

By the way, their sight states any purchase made on April 12th or later of a mac that did not ship with Tiger qualifies for a cd priced at $9.99...I imagine that covers the cost of printing and shipping

Educational

I know that this may not be the most ethical solution but if you go to the apple educational site you can purchase the same os for $69 and this includes free shipping. It isn't quite $20 but then again it isn't $129 either.

Got my answer...I guess.

I got an unsolicited advert for Tiger from apple on one of my email accounts (the one I sent the original inquiry from)...since I have 3 out of 4 email addresses that are registered with apple and the other 2 did not get the advert, I can only assume that this was apple's response to my request for a price break on the upgrade (considering my recent purchase of their product, I thought I might get a discount).

I pretty much expected to be told I was out of luck but it would have been cool on apple's part to give me a personalized response...I mean considering the fact that they only have 1 out of every 33 computer users using their product you think they could have found the time, right?

Missed it by 2 days...

by n2ifp - 4/29/05 9:09 AM In reply to: Got my answer...I guess. by grimgraphix

Don't feel bad, both my brother and I missed it by two days. Our purchase of two Macs was on Sunday April 10, 2005.

I have not tried to contact Apple yet. I have a feeling that they won't make any exceptions. I certainly don't agree with it. Apple going back to a shade over two weeks, seems rather short to me.

Cheers!

Discount Coupons

by n2ifp - 4/29/05 10:51 AM In reply to: discount on new OS by peter L

Hi Peter,

I did find amongst the disks a form with 4 coupons as proof of purchase. I am not sure how they work or what kind of discount they give.

I wonder if anyone has had experience with the discounts here in the USA?

Thank you,

Larry Winward

Did you check out Apple's Up -to Date program?

by gwats1957 - 4/29/05 2:15 PM In reply to: Should I have to pay for Tiger for an iBook I got in Feb? by grimgraphix

Apple has a program for recent purchasers of new Macs to get the latest OSX for their Machines. Check the Website and contact Apple. By the way , I broke my Powerbook trying to install a larger hard drive into it.
Applecare
not only repaired the machine, They told me my third party Ram was defective and warned me my Battery would fail in less than a year.
Otherwise, I am extremely pleased with Apple.
I picked my copy of Tiger through Other World Computing for $99.
Apple's Products are a bit pricey, But you won't spend 30% of your time
fixing them or debugging them!
