I have a 4 year old P3 that has been running for almost all the time. I only shut my computer when I need to change hardware (or if there is a problem), or if I'm on a 2 day vacation. However, I did change the power supply once (LOL, it blew up) and the Hard disk (was becoming too slow).
I plan on getting a P4, but I'm not sure if it will be OK (or Safe) to leave the computer on like I'm doing now.
A friend of mine, who owns a P4, always persists that he shuts his PC at night. I tell him there's nothing wrong with it, but refuses to listen. He says it’s not good for the 'Processor'.
What do you think? Who's right? And does Intel still make good quality processors?
Also, seeing as size has dramatically decreased, does this mean that processors are more prone to failure?
Thank you all and have a good day?
There is the famous on/off discussion and I think its some 1,000 plus posts long.
You can read it?

I have no problems w/ Intel CPU's, except price.
go to tomshardware.com for a comparision on performance then check out the prices. AMD usually (not always) comes in at lower pricepoint.
Be aware AMD inflates it's names e.g. a "2100+" may only run at 1800Mhz , not 2100mhz as the name may imply. benchmarking is important.
also, the disk subsystem (hdd, ata, ide, sata, etc interface) has more to do w/ overall performance these days than cpu. cpu on typical pc spends most of it's time waiting on data from the HDD.
an Athlon XP 3000 may only be 2.1GHz, but it'll still perform better than other 2.1GHz cpus. the numbers were designed to be an estimate of what the cpu would be equivalent to, but yeah.... they're pretty inflated now.
I am running an amd athalon xp +3000/400. my clock speed is only 2.1 ghz, but I bench out about as good as a 3.0 ghz intel, and I saved about $300 to buy fast drives, better vidio card etc.
My brother bought a 2.8 Ghz Celeron puter, and was so disapointed at the slow performance he asked me to remobo his machine to amd to get the speed up.
Yes they do!! I have 10 working PCs, when I'm not using them thay are running SETI units. But when summer comes and the price of electricty goes up all but one are going to turned off.
As long as a processor has good cooling it will run I have never had a processor ( AMD or Intel) go bad. Maybe others have had some go bad.
Now hard drives are a different story, they go bad!!
The starting up and shutting down is harder on the HD than the processor. John
I think Bob Proffitt was thinking of this one:

A business with a row of computers can afford to leave the computers running and that seems to spill over to home users, which I think is not a good idea. IMO it will be replacement time before your PC goes bonkers from shutting it down every night.
Myself, for the past 6 years running 3 computers, I think for safety and giving the PC's a needed rest & restart (just like giving a vitamin pill), I turn mine off each night. I had a power supply overheat and start smoking while I was in the room in the daytime. The other day I read in these forums of a guy having smoke & his optical mouse melt from some sort of electrical failure while he was gone, and barely got home in time. Hate to think my smoke alarm wouldn't catch smoke from the PC in the middle of the night and kill us. Also without a high end (joules) surge suppresser with their insurance, current flux and lightening storms can zap while sleeping or gone.
Where I live, there are not as much storms as you think. Perhaps 3, tops, a year.
My friends computer once got fried during a surge. His power supply, hard disk, processor got busted in a flash. This is when he went to get a UPS. It also made me get a surge protector.
Chow.
