Program not responding

by WebAnt - 4/23/05 12:29 PM In reply to: "Program not responding" by Cursorcowboy

Cursorcowboy, I have found that putting my computer in Selective Startup mode and limiting the number of programs that load when it starts up has solved a host of problems. My computer now establishes an automatic connection to the internet when I shut it down when before I would have to run the Charter Pipleline Professor so it could fix my Internet Connection Settings which some program was constantly screwing up,my computer runs faster since less programs are running, and of course it starts up faster as well. The only drawback is that one has to know which Services and Start Up programs they need to run when their computer starts up or it will not be able to do things like print for instant. Print Spooler in Services has to be enabled for that. Take care.

I think your programs are what's causing your problem's

by sweetsy - 4/22/05 12:36 AM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

I think your programs are what's causing your problem's, as odd as that may sound it's most likely very true. I have had problems with Norton removing files that where needed for my programs to work and if you use Norton anti virus with crash guard and shield, they really do cause it to freeze and crash for very often & with little reason and take up a lot of space on your hard drive and memory... but the spy bot is most likely removing the files needed, you should know most of the software that has spy ware as part of the program will quit working if they are removed but they can be blocked safely and that one reason I'm glad I use AOL SE. because it gives me a program that blocks spy ware(does not remove them),pop up's,firewall and anti virus, which help keep my computer healthy and with a lot less hassle., as odd as that may sound it's most likely very true. Download Hijack This and post up the log

by junhao82 - 4/22/05 3:08 AM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

There are too many reasons why this might have happened, like spyware/virus, wrong program installation/uninstallations, improper firewall configurations, over-zealous spyware protections, etc.

One of the ways would be to download Hijack This! from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html (be careful, don't download from other sites) and post up the log generated. This can help check for spyware/virus infestation.

Re-Install

by d2r4 - 4/22/05 4:15 AM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

Did you try re-installing the offending browser with its lasted version?

Also try Registry Mechanic:
http://www.download.com/Registry-Mechanic/3000-2094_4-10349249.html

I've found it very helpfull for cleaning out the unexplainable oddball problems.

Oddball crashing

by johndmes - 4/22/05 6:24 AM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

Oddball crashes used to be a part of Windows daily life. It's not so much now, and it can be really frustrating when it happens.

SBartel, there can be many causes for this kind of behaviour. It sounds like you've dome some of the basics (antivirus scan, spyware check, cache cleanup), so it's time to get a little deeper. Some of this is not for the faint of heart, so please be careful.

First, make a backup of your Registry. To do so, you need to use RegEdit, with comes with XP. Go to Start->Run, and type "regedit" in the box that appears, click OK.

When RegEdit comes up, select the "My Computer" line in the left pane, then go to the File Menu and select Export. Give the file a name, put it where you can find it easily (I use the root of C drive), and make sure that the "All entries" checkbox is marked, and click OK. After a couple of minutes, it'll finish (depends on how big your Registry is).

After the backup completed, exit RegEdit. Next, if you have all of Norton (not just Antivirus), run WinDoctor. WinDoctor, while elementary, can catch many registry errors that can cause random crashes. Registry errors are a major reason for one program to crash consistently, while others don't. If you don't have the full Norton, then you may need to either 1) download a registry repair utility providing your browser will let you, or 2) buy one and install it. The ones I use at home are either Abexa's Complete Registry Cleaner (www.abexa.com) or Registry Mechanic (www.winguides.com) Both do a good job, better than WinDoctor. I personally use Abexa more than Registry Mechanic, it seems to catch more.

Once you get it, run the utility and make sure to have it check everything. Once the utility finishes, reboot and try things out. You should be fixed at that point. If something goes wrong, well that's why I had you back up the Registry - so you can restore your system.

If it's not registry issues, try cleaning up your swapfile. Open up the System control panel, select the Advanced tab, select the Settings button under Performance, select the Advanced tab, then click the Change button under Virtual Memory. If the selection here is "System managed size", select Custom size, then in the numbers boxes, type a number that is exactly 1.5 times your RAM memory area. I.E if you have 512MB of memory, the number to go here is 768. Make sure that both numbers are the same - do NOT give it a range. This results in a fixed-size page file, which enhances system stability. After you enter those numbers, click the Set button. Reboot the computer after this, and try your applications. You may find a change. If not, reverse the process (if you want) to go back to the way it was.

Please try these and post again with the results!

A friend of mine was having the same problem....

by jessmeyer - 4/22/05 6:27 AM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

I had her empty the brower cache, the temporary internet files, delete her cookies, everything.

She freed up 1.6 GB of space on her machine - Yes, Gigs! - and her programs immediately began cooperating.

I also agree with the response to look into Registry Mechanic. I use it frequently and it was well worth the cost.

I would also suggest updating any software or programs that you can.

Try TuneUp Utilities

by sstevens69 - 4/22/05 6:38 AM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

I abandoned Norton Systemworks a few years ago because of the way it was taking over my system (and slowing it down). I switched to TuneUp Utilities (the latest version is TuneUp2004 - available from http://www.tune-up.com) and have never looked back. It does many of the maintenance tasks this thread has mentioned, and may take care of the problem with your system.
It allows you to tweak your registry, your startup files, your display (turn off 3d stuff, for example). It's a pretty complete program.
They have a 30-day free trial that you should try.

CPU

by psbaud - 4/22/05 8:49 AM In reply to: hi there i think it maybe your cpu could be overheating by bobby881

It may be your CPU overheating I had this happen a few
times due to a dirty fan. On boot up go into the
motherboard bios and watch the fan and temperature
to make sure it is cooling okay. If this is okay
have you installed any extra Ram lately?? This will
also cause this problem, or maybe some ram has broke
down. Open the computer and remove the ram one stick at
a time to see if this helps(mix and match). Also could
be the fan in the power supply make sure it is
running strong..
hope this helps

Program not Responding:Some suggestions

by dfra - 4/22/05 8:48 AM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

Hey,
well first how about some background:

1. what was the last thing you did before this error popped up(installed something SW or HW)
2. What OS is installed?
3. Are you running a standard modem, cable modem, DSL modem or router or...?

Many of the answers are plausible.

Rather than trying to be specific without any background given, I would attach importance to these:

1. clean the inside of your computer and CPU fan
2. insufficient space on hard drive
3. insufficient memory (also run a memory checker)
4. re-install IE
5. re-install your network drivers
6. update your OS and IE

Hope this helps

Program not responding

by gcowgill - 4/22/05 9:27 AM In reply to: Program not Responding:Some suggestions by dfra

I had the same problem which got so bad that I uninstalled Norton System Works from my computer and installed Freedom security suite. Next I turned off the Service pack II firewall along with other Window security features and turned on Freedom.

My freezing problem is now cured.

My Recommendation - Worked Before

by LMartin9 - 4/22/05 2:10 PM In reply to: Program not responding by gcowgill

My friend experienced a similar issue with his computer. Obviously, the short term answer is you have to re-install your computer, however many times that is not only convenient, but extremely time consuming and prone to losing important data.

Having said that, here is what I recommend:
1) Uninstall everything except for Ad-aware - lose Norton!
2) Download, install, and perform a full scan using Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta, this is the best software I have ever used to find spyware running on a particular computer. Additionally, it downloads updates automatically, scans your computer while your not using it, and block potentially harmful internet executables from hijacking your computer.
3) Run Windows Update and download critical updates.
4) Re-install Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Reinstalling Service Pack 2 is extremely important because it copies all of the DLL's and EXE's related to Internet Explorer into the System32 directory and Program Files directory.

You can download Microsoft Antispyware Beta from their website (http://www.microsoft.com) and typing "Anti Spyware" in the search box.

If this doesn't work, I don't think there will be anything you can do except to reinstall your computer. Windows XP heavily relies on the TCP/IP protocol, and running a corporate network, I have seen one too many anomolies with TCP/IP that simply aren't worth the time and effort to resolve.

I hope this helps.

just a thought

by deadstroke - 4/22/05 4:28 PM In reply to: "Program Not Responding" and computer freezing .. by sbartel

If you are running Windows 2000 or XP you may be short on RAM. This would cause your system not to respond. Good Luck
