Cats

OS X (pronounced O S 10) is the Operating System that runs all newer Macintosh computers.
All the versions of OS X have been given codenames by Apple. The latest version of OS X (10.4), which is being released on April 29th, is codenamed Tiger. Previous versions of OS X were codenamed as follows: 10.3 Panther 10.2 Jaguar.
When you buy your Powerbook G4, if it is new, it will have OS X (10.4) Tiger installed on it. If it is used then it may have an earlier version of OS X installed.

Make sense now?

OS 10

Since OS X, Apple has used cat names for different versions of it's OS.
Jaguar is 10.2, Panther is 10.3, and Tiger is 10.4 which will be released at the end of this month.

P,
Does Apple use beta testers on their new releases such as “Tiger?”
Have you ever been a beta tester for any new app? Just curious. Concerning the Tiger reviews from Apple, how hot is it in your estimation and what feature are you looking forward to?

Jagaur, Panther, Tiger OS X????

by afm - 4/15/05 5:22 AM In reply to: tiger, panther, jagaur by karthij

Do not fear. The different OS X systems are similar to Windows in that the different OS offer more features and securities. Panther 10.3 is more advanced than Jagaur 10.2. But Tiger 10.4 is more advanced than Panther 10.3. I am still running Jagaur on my G4 17" PowerBook and it is just great! One of the only problems with running an earlier OS is that the new software that comes out will not be compatible and you will forced to ungrade so that you can use it. If you are running Panther, (Judging by your being new to the Mac World) I think that you will be fine for at least a couple of years. Congratulations and Enjoy!

Tiger, Panther, Jaguar???

by cpo99 - 4/15/05 8:05 AM In reply to: tiger,panther,jagaur by karthij

KP,
Welcome to the Mac Universe. The feline names are codenames for the various versions of Mac OS X. The current version is Panther and on April 29th Tiger will supersede it. Each version since 10.2 has been great and I anticipate getting Tiger (10.4) as soon as possible. When you buy your PowerBook you may get Tiger but I would expect Panther depending on when you buy. Even if your PowerBook has Panther (10.3) you will be able to get Tiger for $20.
Mac OS X has been great since Jaguar (10.2) and very stable. That stability has continued to improve and features have been added. Tiger promises to do the same. I believe you will enjoy your PowerBook and be convinced you made a wise decision everytime you use it. Hope this helps.

If anyone wishes to find out about all of Tiger's new features, a visit to Apple's site will tell you all you want, with a good coverage of the main new features comparing 10.4 to 10.3

Welcome to the MacOholics ranks.

Tiger for $20?!?!?!?

by spode69 - 4/15/05 10:01 AM In reply to: Tiger, Panther, Jaguar??? by cpo99

Where can you get a copy of OS X 10.4 for $20? I checked Apple's site - the cheapest they sell it for is $129. They list this as an upgrade. I searched the internet, and the cheapest I could find it for is $100 at Amazon.

The poster is referring to the Apple Up-to-Date program which allows purchasers of new Mac's,purchased after the release of Tiger but before machines start shipping with Tiger installed, to update for a very low price

Tiger upgrades

by kinnear3 - 4/15/05 2:14 PM In reply to: $20 by mrmacfixit Moderator

Actually, I read that Apple will sell Tiger for $9.95 to anyone who purchases a new Mac between now and April 29. It might be simpler to wait until Tiger is released and purchase a new machine with Tiger.

(Those of us with Macs purchased prior to April 2005 will need to pay full price for Tiger, if we want it.)

Tiger preloaded

by Dirt - 4/15/05 9:24 PM In reply to: grrrrr......roar!! by karthij

How long after the release of the upgrade does it usually take for it to be preloaded on a machine.
Thanks,
Dirt

It depends

by mrmacfixit Moderator - 4/16/05 5:50 AM In reply to: Tiger preloaded by Dirt

on a number of factors, the prime one being where you actually purchased the machine. Doubtless the Apple store will be the first to actually ship Tiger installed machines but as the supply line moves along and inventory at MacMall, CDW, etc., is rotated, the new stock will arrive with Tiger installed.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Tiger machines shipping from the Apple store on day of release but I would not bank on it
