Dell vs. HP/Compaq

by CiscoJP - 4/7/05 8:45 AM

I'm looking to buy a new computer, have always used Compaq Presarios. But I'm exploring other options as well. Does anyone have any advice on if I should stick with HP/Compaq, or try a Dell?

IMO

Dell is annoying with quality that's barely adequate.

HP/Compaq is annoying and crap quality.

I personally just build my own systems. I don't pay for a bunch of stupid software I'm never going to use, I get better quality hardware, I know exactly what's in my computer, I can more readily upgrade the system on a whim, and in the long term it's considerably cheaper.

I'll also say, that now that Packard Bell is basically out of business in the US, HP/Compaq systems take the top prize for being the absolutely most annoying systems to work on. Cramped cases, odd configurations, and highly dubious quality control methods in hardware selection.

Older Gateway systems are highly obnoxious, but they seem to have improved slightly in the last few years.

Depending on if you buy a low or high end Dell, they can be just as obnoxious as HP/Compaq (low end) or almost tollerable (high end).

I'm sure that building one's own computer is the way to go. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to start. About 2 1/2 years ago, my boyfriend and I got a Dell, and so far we've been very satisfied with it. I'm not sure what defines a high end computer, but I know he paid quite a chunk for the system we have: a Dell Dimension 8200, Intel Pentium 4 Processor, 512mb RAM, Phoenix BIOS, Lexmark X83 aio, 17" FP LCD. Maybe everything goes together just right or something, but we've had some amazing experiences with this setup. My knowledge of computers is not great, but I love to experiment, and that can be dangerous. But, so far, the Dell and Lexmark have put up with me.

I am new as well, but ive bought 3 pc's and they have all been made by HP and so far, they work great. The one I got in 2000 still works fine. Just a thought.

Great computer, however not customizable, but comes with AMD 64 3200+ Socket 939 and PCI-Express slot, best buy.

HP

Out of the 3 of them I would say HP is better quality, but also more expensive.

If I were you, I would sitck with HP/Compaq. You get the best support (which you probaly won't need.) I will bet you that your dell will be a big fight that is not worth it. HP is a little more expencive but is worth it.

Really?

Seems to me you're constantly hearing about how bad HP/Compaq support is... And their system quality is the material of jokes for IT professionals.

Like many others, never in my life have I had a harder time installing Linux on a system, than when I tried to install it on a Compaq. Pretty much any other system is a breeze in comparison. This was pre-merger, and from what I've seen, things have gotten worse, not better. HP has managed to kill off all the good things Compaq aquired (mostly from DEC). The Alpha CPU will be sorely missed, Tru64 is still way beyond HP/UX... I think you need to find a source of info beyond HP's quarterly reports.

What makes you feel good?

Its pretty much like a Ford-Chevy purchase or a Sears-JCPenny type of thing. Just find what suits you and seems the better deal and go with it. Of course read the fine print and/or warranty issues, etc. to get a feel for what can happen or fall back on, so be at least informed. Take my advice, if you find any problems no matter where gotten from, act quickly to resolve and if the first fix/resolution doesn't work, use the warranty to return or send to a repair or have a tech be send to your home. Esculate quickly and don't fall for delaying tactics, so if a problem happens with the "return no questions asked period"(likely 1-15,maybe 30 days, return it) just use its return policy, don't get buirned.

Dell vs. HP/Compaq

Not Dell! We purchased a Dell Dimension 8100 with an additional 3 year warranty (phone Technical support and at home technical support). They would not send anyone to our home because they always had to verify that something was really wrong. They even asked me to open the tower to try and fix the noise I was having with the fan. To me that was Technical support that someone should have come to my home to fix. It wasn't until my computer crashed that they did replace my hard drive and sent someone to install. I was sooo disappointed with what we had hoped to be help from Dell. The reason we bought the extra warranty. I was told more than once that is how Dell works. Not always easy to understand their technical support people as most of them were from India.
My recommendation is to have someone knowledgeable to put together a generic sytem for you that they would always be available to help. That is what we will do next time. mrmrsbh
