Best TV for 90% use on regular DirecTV? HD or ED?

by flashgordon - 4/8/05 4:18 PM

My wife and I watch 90% DirecTV, and 10% DVD. I've heard that HD distorts regular TV and it looks horrible while ED enhances regular TV. Overall, is ED the best choice vs HD for what we watch TV for? Thank you.

Maybe it's how devices are hook to the tv.

I can only speak on personal experience. I have a HDTV (plasma) and I also have DirecTV (regular..not HD). I did not experience the things that you've heard. It looks normal to me. If I hook it up to the highest resolution my tv is capable of, then I might experience that but my directv box doesn't have that capability. I think I have it hookup to the s-video output right now. Hope this help a little.

Recently I remember someone posted here about how he went to Whitefront store and bought a directv box with components output for about $70; and he sounded very happy with the result. So even component output resolution works very well.

HD can be a good solution

Sanyo HDTV Model No. HT30744 for 30" widescreen or HT320744 for 32" standard ratio high definition get good reviews for standard TV watching. I have the HT320744 and am pleased with standard TV and DVDs look awesome. These TVs have both analog and digital (HD) tuners. So if you are close enough to stations that broadcast in HD, you can receive them in high def. The best part is the price, under $700.00 for either. The 30" model sells for under $600.00 in some Walmart stores. As far as I know these are only sold at Walmart. Check out this thread before you make up your mind:

Hope this helps,

By the way HD from over the air sources are really nice, just need a standard TV antenna to pick them up.

HD vs ED

I recently switched from a HD rear projection to a ED plasma, but not specificly for a better picture. The ED plasma does display reguler broadcast better while my former HD set try too hard to upgrade the signal to it's higher resolution. Keep in mind that the picture was never horrible with the HD set and I do miss the extra clarity when I watch a true HD broadcast.

HD looks good

I have an HD plasma and Dish Network. SD Dish braodcasts look pretty good in full screen mode (stretched to 16:9), better in 4:3 aspect. What is really outstanding is the HD programming both off the air via antenna and the HD programming on HDNet and Discovery HD as well as progressive scan DVDs. Why buy a lower resolution ED set when a little more money buys you an HD set. Most of the network programming in the evenings is in HD, so there is pleanty to watch right now and there is more to come. Buy the latest technology.
