Re-installing MAC OSX Software

Hey Guys,

I'm having some trouble with my Powerbook G4 computer, and the only resolution I could find was to reinstall the operating system. Here is the scenario:

1) I inserted the Installation Disk One (1) and held down on the "C" key in order to boot from the disk.

2) After booting, it then guided me to Install Mac OSX" screen whereas I proceeded to the "Select Destination" screen.

3) When I reached to the "Select Destination " screen there were NO DRIVES BEING DISPLAYED.

I have no idea were to take it from here, and I'm very frustrated as this is a brand new system that had coincidentally crashed whilst undergoing some simple procedures. Anyhow, your feedback is highly nticipated.

Lost Hard Drive

It would appear that the installer is unable to detect, for whatever reason, your Hard drive.
This is normally caused by one of two things. Actual HD failure or an extremely corrupted HD Directory.
With either problem, the machine may start doing strange things for a while, and then failing or just plain old fail.
Try this. Boot the machine from the install disk and instead of going through the install procedure, go to the top menu bar and run the disk utility. If the disk utility cannot see the drive, quit the Disk Utility. If it can, run the First Aid on it and see if that fixes the problem.
Also, find the Apple Hardware test CD and boot the machine from that. Run the tests and see what it reports. Make a note of any errors that the HWT finds. As you say this machine is brand new, the next step is to call Apple and tell them what is going on. Make a note of any case number they give you. If they do not give you a case number, ask for one. This is important.

Apple Hardware Tests

The Apple Hardware Tests showed up quite fine. Both the Extended and quick tests revealed that all the peripherals were in good working condition.

when that happens.
I assume that the hard drive actually mounts on the desktop when you boot from it?
If it does, let's go back to the installer disk, reboot and try again.
What did the Disk First Aid say?

Hard Drive failed.

Hey guys, I guess the problem is that the harddrive had totally crashed. It is not picking up none at all. I tried all of the following and still no luck:


1) Re-setting the PRAM
2) Using Disk Warrior CD -- (No Hard drive Showed up)
3) Apple Hardware Test -- (Everything showed up fine - Both Extended & Quick test)
4) Disk Utility using the manufacturer boot Disk -- (No Harddrive present)
5) Installing MacOSX -- (No harddrive showed up under "DRIVE SELECTION").

Sorry to hear that, I'm currently clearing up after someone with a defective drive and no backup.
Hopefully you were backing up and this will just be a minor bump in the road
