Actually, I used to prefer my home page being set to about:blank, because the browser loads faster. I never had a virus or anything, I just liked it blank. However, learning about the potential effects, I now use google.com, as it is the fastest loading site I've encountered.
Setting your homepage to about blank is not a problem, you don't need to change it if you are setting it that way intentionally. There is a spyware program that changes your homepage to about blank (and installs a bunch of other garbage ads) and no matter what you change it too, it keeps returning to the about blank page. I had an annoying about:blank problem in which it was even freezing windows update and many other web sites.I found CWShredder. It searches for and removes any variant of the Cool Web Search Worm which i was infected with. CoolWebSearch variants can also have many other side effects being on your computer.
