go to services (control panel > administrative tools> services) and make sure Cryptographic Services is started.
Worked like a charm.
Hi, I just used system recovery to recover my computer in its original condition last night because there were some other problems going on with it, and just felt starting fresh was the best way to go. I reset up everything like my dsl internet connection etc. I use Windows XP.
I went to the Windows Update site, and tried downloaded all the updates they suggested I install as high priority, but I also get a message that everything failed:
The following updates failed to be installed successfully:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2005 (KB890830)
Error: There is not enough disk space to install the update(s). Free additional space on your hard disk and then try again.
I ran cleanmgr.exe and that didn't help either. Actually, the last part about the "error" didn't even show up on the IE screen. Only when I copied and pasted the above did the Error that there was not enough disk space show up. Odd. I know for a fact I certainly am not lacking in disk space because my computer is back to completely former condition when I purchased it in 2004. So there's really nothing on it at the current moment.
Anyhow, could it be possible that this is also a problem attributable to the Microsoft website and not my computer? The only other thing I did after I recovered my original system was uninstall anything Symantec and NAV related because the NAV was version 2003, and aside from that I have a PC-cillin 2005 suite that I was planning on installing. I also uninstalled some 'games' from HP that came prepackaged with my computer b/c I knew I didn't need them. And the only other thing I can remember uninstalling is this pre-packaged program called Softex Omnipass software. None of these programs to my knowledge are necessary for a normal Windows operation... Anyhow, does anyone have any insight they might be able to share? Thanks
Lot's of updates you list there.
Perhaps there were too many for the OS to handle all at once.
I think you have two options.
1] A bit at a time. Select the earliest update, and let WU download and install it. Reboot, then re-visit WU for the next, and so on.
2] Perhaps the better way, find SP2, (Service Pack 2), in the list, download and install that. SP2 incorporates "all" of the critical and priority updates that were issued before SP2 was issued. Then reboot, make sure the computer is working ok, then re-visit WU to download and install the remaining updates. There shouldn't be so many.
Whichever you choose, set a custom Restore Point before starting.
Good luck

I've had this Windows update problem for a while now and nobody has been able to help with it. SO, I tried everything that Matt suggested and three strange things happened - firstly, when I typed net start wuauserv at the Command prompt it said the requested service had already been re-started. Disconcerting, mmmmmmm..... Anyway, secondly, the updates didn't work; and thirdly, when I looked back in C:\WINDOWS\Software Distribution all the folders I had deleted were back there already, though not all containing the same files as they had before I deleted them. Is it me, or does my computer have a mind of its own?? Beats me. Any help most welcome.
Without searching the forums I don't know what problems you have been having with Windows Update.
Is it the same as mine were? If not, what were they?

My problems with Windows Update were exactly the same as yours Mark. I would click on the icon in the Start menu, it would find it, etc. and give a list of updates available, all of which failed when I tried to download and install them. My way out of it was to jot down the relevant numbers of each update and then search for them in the Microsoft Download Centre and download them each separately. This worked every time. I've been having lots of other problems with downloads. In a nutshell, anything which requires my computer to access the internet to look for something doesn't work, e.g. updating spyware programs or clicking on a link in a trusted email. I am also unable to get either Mozilla or Enigma to run. What I have found, after a lengthy discussion on another posting, is that I may have a problem with IE, which is somehow causing all of this. You see, I run Microsoft Antispyware (Beta) every day automatically; and every day it finds the same possible browser hijacker on the start page of IE. I delete it of course but it's there again the next day! I've got loads of antispyware programs but my problem still persists. I think I may well end up re-installing XP.
It does seem to be a problem other than just Windows Updates.
I expect this will continue in your other thread John.

Hi I have read all postings relating to XP Updates not installing. When I go to the 'Work around' suggestion, posted by Matt Burton, posted 02/22/05 8:16 AM. I did step one and two. Only problem there was after I stopped the automatic update service, for step 3 it says to "Open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution. Delete the contents of this folder." Does this mean all SUB FOLDERS also and their content? I have 6 sub folders under the SoftwareDistribution folder plus single files in many of them. HELP! I don't want to dump folders that are needed, but the instructions are fuzzy to me. Can you answer this or lead me somewhere that does? I don't know who to ask, and my first time posting. Thanks, Su1link
if automatic updates or the windows updates fails and you know the names of the updates you need, go to the downloads section on the microsoft website and download them to your hard drive and execute them yourself. and if none of the solutions work... boat anchor
one of the most common reasons downloads seem to fast is that they are already downloaded and may be incomplete or corrupt. If they are found in the WUTemp folder, they aren't downloaded again.
empty the c:\WUTemp folder (it could also be on other drives) and try the updates again.
Keith.
I had an identical problem, called MS for assistance, they had me try everything including removal of XP & SP2 & reinstall (sent me a new complete disc) to no avail. I was and am using Panda antivirus Platinum. I uninstalled it, downloading resumed normally, I reinstalled Panda & have had no problems since. Perhaps your antivirus program is corrupted and you might consider doing what I did.
Check host file to make sure there is no pointer to WUS (Windows update Servives). If it is, delete it. A tip I got from MS. It worked for me.
I have also reinstalled XP, deleted the files suggested and am only looking to get ONE update: (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB867282). I have turned off the firewall, turned off virus protection, etc, and downloaded the file from another site (WU site not working for me either) to install manually. So now I get the message: "The system cannot find the path specified" --so what should I do??
I have read through all 39 messages and done the suggestions including waiting for several days (2 weeks now). I have not called MS!
To correct update failures I always click on the microsoft tech help and send an email on this type of problem. This help is free when it is a windows issue and I have had 4 update failures. They have replied to each problem within a day and gave exact instructions to fix the problem. It worked everytime, I got my updates, and I got free help from microsoft.
Here's the fix:
First, use the Windows Installer Cleanup utility to remove the corrupted
.NET Framework components.
Step 1: Remove the corrupted .NET Framework components
==========================================
1. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
Note: Although it is released as a Microsoft Office update, it can be used
to fix Windows Installer.
2. Then, run it from Start-> All Programs-> Windows Install Clean Up.
3. Select any items related to .NET Framework, and remove them.
After removing previous .NET Framework installation, please download .NET
Framework 1.1 and install it. Here are the detailed steps:
Step 2: Download .NET Framework 1.1 and install it.
============================================
1. Download .NET Framework 1.1 from the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en
2. Install .NET Framework 1.1.
3. Download .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 from the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a8f5654f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&displaylang=en
4. Install .NET Framework 1.1 SP1.
After that, install the security update
