Digital Camera - Pictures disappeared

by llucyy - 3/30/05 5:39 PM

I had a family barbecue on Easter Sunday evening and thought I better get some pics so started clicking away. The battery ran out after the first so changed batteries and continued. Each pic showed up on screen OK after it was taken, but next day went to download to PC and found most missing! Earlier pics taken previously were still there, as was the first(I think) that I took that night.I fired more shots then on manual and auto, with flash and without and they were all OK.I took the card out and read it on a card reader, but same story. Not there.I checked the camera without the card - only one shot from the past still there.Checked the card which comes up as a hard drive, and checked the totals as a disk, the available and sum of previous pic bytes balanced. The camera is a generic 3.1 MP with optical zoom and panasonic CCD. Where did the pics go?

A few recovery software (some free) are noted at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6142-0.html?forumID=58&threadID=49112&messageID=583948&tag=cnr

I think you are asking how to get the photos back and not where did they go or how.

Vanishing Digital Photo Mystery

by DocCamera - 4/1/05 6:41 AM In reply to: Digital Camera - Pictures disappeared by llucyy

I repair digital cameras and it sounds like you might have a second folder that was created on your card when you changed batteries. Most of the missing shots might be in this other folder. The only way to view this properly is to load it into your computer via a card reader and open it like a hard drive. it would reveal more than one folder in your root directory.

Another possibility is the bad one. The buffer memory on your camera could be failing. This is the memory that is used to temporarily store the images captured by your CCD so that they may be processed with the proper white balance, sharpness and tone settings befor being stored onto your removable card.
This memory is usually part of the CCD circuit in cameras under $500 and is costly to replace.

Then again, I would check for bent or dirty pins in the removable card slot where your memory card is inserted. There are contact cleaners and straighteners on the market that can safely clean and restore alignment to the delicate pins that mate with your particular type of memory card. One pin that is dirty can actually allow you to see captured images on your LCD screen, because the camera senses that the card is in place, but never allow the image to store on the card because the write or read signal is not enabled.

Digital Camera - Pictures Disappeared

by grandpajim - 4/1/05 7:22 AM In reply to: Digital Camera - Pictures disappeared by llucyy

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I put the camera in my pants pocket after making a number of photos. I found that the excessive heat (when the camera was in my pocket) caused the photos to be erased. I never put the camera in my pocket anymore and have not had the problem since.

Don't Use Picassa. Get rid of it before all your pics are gone.

I used the program testdisk.6.10 from www.download.com.

It worked! I checked my media card from my hard drive...did not have two folders...I tried other recovery softwares...they found nothing. This program ran in DOS and worked...it recovered all my photos since the last time I formatted my card (more than what I was looking for)!!!!!!!!

Also, if you find any problems, it should ask about creating files from folders then type no. it can get you the backup.

Try it once.
