which ONE would you choose if cost is an issue? and which ONE if money is not an issue? thank you
You failed to say what type of camera you are going to use with the lens.
My answer is based on the Canon Rebel, 10D or 20D and that you already have the kit lens 18-55 mm F3.5
Budget: I wouldn't buy any - the kit lens will do. (just raise your ISO one step).
No Budget: None that you listed but would get the new Canon 24mm f1.4 (why? - good low light capability)

i tried using the kit at iso 1600 and it's very slow. do you think all those lenses are not capable? the 24mm 1.4L is too expensive. thanks
My decision was not based on a lens being capable.
It was based on being practical.
If you want wide angle and find that the kit lens is not bright enough, any of the brighter lenses you listed will be better, but only by two to three f-stops. You may find that is still not enough, if you are looking for faster shutter speed too.
You must be shooting in very low light.
Have you considered getting an external flash unit.
These units can easily cover 50 to 60 feet.

If you do not need wide angle and want a brighter lens; the most popular lens is the 50mm f1.8 which sells for about $80. There is also a 50mm f1.4 lens, which costs more. As far as photo quality, most owners say they are about equal. The f1.4 just lets in more light.

what about the Sigma 24mm F1.8EX? I'm trying to avoid shooting with flash.
I could not find a great deal of owner information on the lens but what I did find, was positive.
One person was using it for shooting low light in clubs and such. It was his number one choice.
Here is a link to a discussion of that lens:

I ended up going with a Tamron DI28-75 with 2.8 all the way through - love it. I can post links to a pic site if you are interested.
Paul
i'm actually buying the tamron 28-75 along with the wide prime. saw a lot of good reviews about it. but i think that f/2.8 will be inadequate in some situation. thanks for confirming the tamron 28-75. by the way, where did you buy your 28-75? there's some issues about the quality control
