Just a pity Microsoft don't tell their customers (who do, after all, pay their wages)these things and just wait for every poor s*d to contact them individually! Would it be too much trouble and expense for them to give out even a hint? I mean, how long has this patch been out there? Two months and they still don't tell anyone that their computer could be rendered worthless! Thanks, Bill!!!
Was this not already posted WAY above? Another poster has already called MS support and posted their experiences. I am "more" confused as to why everytime someone asks the same question, and they get the same answer, why is the question is asked again.
However, a different note, I thank Dave (dehayd) for his original tech support posting. *hugs* worked beautifully.
Starting Friday, 3/11/2005 some of my customers on Win 98 PC's starting getting a General Protection Fault on restart. The GPF occured after network login (Windows and Novell) and before all icons were displayed. Microsoft support said that their Win 98 techs were "overwhelmed" and would be several hours getting to me. While waiting I started backing out updates and forund that removing 8971711 cleared the problem.
This discussion confirmed that 8971711 was the culprit. I find it curious taht M$ just released 8971711 to Win 98 PC's last week. I am also disappointed that M$ updated KB8971711 on 3/8 but not since the trouble started.
By the way - Most of the Win 98 PC's that I support did not have a problem. I have not determined what combination of hardware & or software causes the problem.
A few days after installing KB8971711 my WIN98se would not boot up. I have had reformat and re install. Lots of fun.
As suggested by others in this message stream run msconfig to turn off KB8971711 in startup. At first I was removing it. Now I have had customers reinstall it. I have not had any follow up problems where I turned it off in start up.
I am still looking for M$ to update thier KB.
Hi. New member here, but have done some checking on KB891711. Here is a post I found in another forum from a member who called MS Tech Support (said it was the best support he'd ever gotten from them). Anyway, here is his reply:
I've noticed the same thing running in the background on my WIN98 machine, and ran
across this thread looking for info. Since nobody seemed to have a definitive answer, I
decided to call their security support line.
Got with a tech support guy fairly quickly (!) and he explained that the KB891711 patch
was not required for WIN98, even though the Windows Update service called it a critical
update. He had me uncheck it in the Startup list on msconfig, and also remove it from the
registry: Run Regedit, export a registry file to the desktop as a backup, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/
He had me look in both the "Run-" folder and "RunServices-" folders. KB891711 was in
"RunServices-". Right-click and hit "delete." (As a bonus, I also noticed an entry for a
piece of spyware in the same folders, and killed that, too.) Did a restart, and now it's no
longer showing up in the Task Manager.
Hope this helps someone.
Best....Mystified
Mystified,
I too fought the same problem as everyone else for hours and hours and hours. When finally frustrated, I called Microsoft and paid my $35. After an hour the tech suggested the same solution. After that, I fought similar problems with my laptop and it proved to be the same fix. Getting it out of the register seems important as well as startup and uninstall. Thanks for writing the procedure....helped me do it myself (saved $35).
Kind of frustrating to think they charged me $35 to fix their problem! The ultimate insult!
Who cares, its worth it to get rid of the frustration!! 8-)
Was unable to open my own post, so I'm answering this way. Wanted to let you know I did what I posted to my own machine. It worked. No longer have KB891711 showing up anywhere, and no problems with system because of it. Didn't want to post something I hadn't done to my own system.
BTW, I use W98SE and IE 6 SP1
Hope this helps....Mystified
This update caused my Sony Windows/Me lap-top to freeze in Internet Explorer 6. I got rid of the KB891711 in my startup and my lap-top seems to be back to normal.
i noticed this exe in my start up too... i have also been bombarded with many blue screen crashes lately- im wondering if its connected? is it safe to uncheck the kb8971711.exe from start up without any problems? im hoping this will fix the blue screen crashes ive been experiencing. anyone have troubles after unchecking it from the start up menu.
read this post http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=91523&messageID=1042999 by Marianna (moderator).I have W98SE,followed the direction and no problems afterwards. Also there is another post here where someone contacted a Msft. Rep. and they said you still have the "security" protection even with it out of your "startup" list.
i unchecked and rebooted .... so far so good. thanks so much
I intended to follow the advice given by the Microsoft guy in Message no 24 (i.e. untick the KB8971711.exe entry in Startup and delete the matching key in the Registry). However, as I deleted the key first, there was (logically in hindsight!) no entry when I went to untick it in Startup. I don't know if that sequence was significant but I continued to get all sorts of problems: intermittent inability to send and receive eMails with Outlook Express 6 (very variable experience), Norton inability to scan eMails, failure of Internet Explorer 6 to work at all, all sorts of Windows and Norton error messages, blue screens and finally complete lock-up. THIS OCCURRED ONLY WHEN ON-LINE; EVERYTHING APPEARED NORMAL OFF-LINE.
In desperation, I uninstalled the KB891711 entry in Add/Remove Programs. I wasn't invited to reboot but did anyway. I have been on-line only once since then but everything worked normally for 10 minutes. Before, it was crashing after only 1 or 2 minutes. So, I am hopeful, but not convinced, that I have solved the problem.
I am looking forward to seeing on this forum a definitive explanation of this weird Windows Update and, hopefully, a foolproof remedy!
It seems funny that MS would automatically put this in a required update for 98SE then state in the meat of it that it is not needed. Then again, this is MS.
I have SE, and will continue for as long as I can. I did not experience a problem using ExPlorer 6 after doing this update but, did notice it running during startup and continue to stay there after my system was up and running.
I did notice it was in the registry under run services. I just simply when to control panel, selected the KB891711 update and removed it. It got rid of the setting in the msconfig, registry and even deleted the Executable. I just deleted the folder KB891711.
I then went to MS update site, scanned and sure enough, the update came back. This time I ignored it with all those language updates which are not critical.
BTW, after reading some of the responses to this problem, I joined this CNET forum and am looking forward to other discussions of future problems MS or whoever will endow on us.
Bob
Bob, if you weren't having problems, why did you remove KB891711? How many times have you been on-line since then and has all been well each time?
Like you, I too joined the CNET forum due to this interesting but frustrating problem.
