Which subwoofer should I buy?

by dukelover79 - 3/22/05 7:14 AM

I need to get a subwoofer, sometime within the next 3-4 months. I've been looking around and talking to various people, but I thought I would post a message here. I've been looking at Mirage, Velodyne, Infinity, and Polk - mainly because they fit my price range and they were offered up as "good brands." I have all polk speakers at home (RTi10, CSi5, FXi5) and a Denon receiver. Any help and advice is appreciated! Oh, I'm looing for a front/side firing subwoofer, NOT a downward firing subwoofer.

Since you have Polk...

I would go with Polk. Side vs. front, are there advantges one over the other? I thought sub. frequence are non-directional. Just curious.

From what I have seen

Some subwoofers have the "speaker" aimed toward the floor, while others have it aimed out toward the room. At least that is what I was told and I've seen it too, but maybe I'm wrong. I have hardwood floors, so anything that is downward firing would really pee of my neighbors. In order to lessen the vibration through the wood, I was looking for front/side firing. Thanks for the advice.

SVS subs. Rock your world.

If you haven't already check out SVS subwoofers that are only available on the net, I have their 20-39 PC+ sub and it literally shakes the house foundation. And by the way no matter what sub you buy you will PEE off the neighbors when you have it up and running regardless wether Fwd or Down firing.

Thanks for the website John, I'll check it out. I figured that about the neighbors too, but anything I can do to lessen their anger is a good thing. :-)

SVS All the Way!

I would strongly recommend the SVS. They make unbelievable subwoofers. They offer a variety of subs to suit your budget, and even their lowest price entry level model, the PB10-isd($429) will literally crush most of the competitors models costing hundreds of dollars more. Seriously consider them for your subwoofer needs.
